SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After serving in the Korean War 67 Years ago, a San Diego veteran is preparing for the trip of a lifetime with Honor Flight San Diego. Chuck Willey says he's looking forward to experiencing the Washington, D.C. memorials with other veterans. "He mentioned about being accepted to the Honor Flight. But said the only problem is I don't have a uniform, and I said oh Chuck, I can help you with that!" said Patricia McKeon Suter, a relative of Willey. She put a call out for help on one of her Facebook groups - Buy Nothing Navajo, San Diego, CA - asking if anyone had a Korean War-era dress. Three days later, a neighbor answered her call."The reason why she really wanted to do it is her grandfather served in the Korean War in the Marines, and she didn't get to honor him, he passed away a while ago, and this was her way of honoring him. It brought tears to my eyes, which it's doing right now," said McKeon Suter.The neighbor found a uniform in Willey's size, pants, and a jacket.Willey's daughter continued the quest on eBay, where someone ultimately donated a hat and tie after learning Willey's story."Overwhelmed, just very, very thankful for all the help," said Mckeon Suter.Willey was also overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers. "I can't believe that people would do that," said Willey.Willey says he is proud of his service and grateful he'll once again be able to wear a uniform for this special occasion. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A stolen Mustang was found abandoned and on fire in Paradise Hills.It happened just before 4 a.m. Monday on Valley Road along State Route 54.The car fire spread to the nearby brush, which made its way up the hillside towards the SR-54.Fire crews had the blaze knocked down in about 15 minutes. No structures were threatened. Investigators believe the car may have been intentionally set on fire. 423

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman died and her son was hospitalized after a shooting at a Linda Vista home early Monday morning.According to San Diego police, officers were called to the 2200 block of Crandall Drive at around 3:15 a.m. in response to a report of gunfire in a home.Officers arrived to find a male and female down with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies.The victims were taken to the hospital, but the woman -- identified by police as a 46-year-old Vietnamese female -- died from her injuries.The injured man -- described by police as a 28-year-old Vietnamese male -- is on life support, but police noted that he is not expected to survive his injuries.Police said they were not actively searching for a suspect, as they believe one of the victims was the shooter. 783

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An apartment building was badly damaged following a two-alarm fire in Serra Mesa Thursday afternoon. According to firefighters, the blaze started at an apartment complex on the 3300 block of Ruffin Road around 1:20 p.m. Once they arrived on scene, firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in 20 minutes. A total of two units, one on the first floor and another on the second, burned in the fire. Two additional units were later determined to have been involved in the blaze. Two adults and two children were displaced from one of the units while two adults and two pets were displaced from the other. SDFD crews have put out a fire at an apartment complex at 3399 Ruffin Rd. Firefighters searched the two apartments involved and no one was inside. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A statue of a dog that sits in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter is often overlooked, but historians say it says a lot about San Diego's past and its present."A lot of people walk by every day and don't even know the story of who Bum is," said Professor David Miller with the San Diego History Center.Bum the Dog was a stray in the 1890s. According to the History Center, he arrived on a boat without an owner or any identification and made himself at home in his new town."He was really owned by nobody but loved by everybody, and he became a symbol of the new San Diego community," said Miller.Throughout his life in San Diego, Bum would wander through all parts of downtown, often bridging the gap between the upper-class areas north of Market Street and the "seedier" parts of the Gaslamp Quarter."This was the area that you had the bars, the saloons, the brothels," said Miller. "Bum didn't live by the social categories that we had created. So he was just as comfortable going to the firehouse as he was going to the brothel or the Chinese butcher shop."Bum also had adventures. Miller tells a story of how he wound up on a train to LA, spent a few days there, and then came back.He also lost a paw in a fight with another dog. Local veterinarians took care of him whenever he got injured."A surgeon had to amputate part of Bum's leg. So he walked around with a limp for the rest of his life, but he was this hero who had to stand up for himself," said Miller.The statue of Bum, also missing a paw, sits in the garden at the Gaslamp Historical Foundation. Most people who walk by it every day never see it.Other parts of San Diego have paid homage to Bum. The city's dog licenses in the early 1900s had his picture on them. And the History Center's kids club is named after Bum.Miller said Bum's story teaches us all about the importance of history."History is fun stories, it's people's lives, it's dogs getting into fights and kicked by horses and getting on trains to LA," said Miller. "But those stories tell us something more important about ourselves and who we are as San Diego."The statue is located on 4th and Island on the Northeast corner. The garden is open to the public every day at 10 a.m. 2237
