SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With distance learning and the fall semester approaching, college students are struggling with what to do about apartments they are no longer moving into.Nicole Ah Mow lives on the Big Island in Hawaii. Ah Mow was excited to help her daughter move to San Diego, as she prepared to attend San Diego State University as a third- year transfer.“We heard that a lot of these apartments get filled up pretty quickly, so we wanted to get in on it quite early,” Ah Mow said.They found 5025 Apartments near the campus and signed a lease to move in later this month. As the pandemic got worse and universities started weighing between in-person or virtual learning, Ah Mow asked the complex if there was any flexibility.“Basically [they] just said at this time, there's no other option,” Ah Mow said.“Everyone is very stressed out,” said Erin Rounds, managing attorney with the Tenants Legal Center.She said they have been flooded with calls since the pandemic began.“Tenants do still have rights and they have enhanced rights right now,” Rounds said. “Landlords need to be understanding and sympathetic and follow the law.”She said its critical families go over their contract. Rounds said there are limited circumstances where you can break a lease. “The sooner you let them know, the better that situation's going to be,” Rounds said.She advised anyone looking to break a lease to contact an attorney.In Ah Mow’s situation, emails from the assistant community manager in early July said they are "unable to terminate [her] lease."In late July, the apartment complex managers gave her three options: move in and pay the rent, allow the complex to find someone to take over her daughter’s spot and pay the fees, or Ah Mow needed to find someone herself and pay a 0 reassignment fee.“I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place,” she said.Not knowing the area, she opted for 5025 Apartments to find someone. However, she told Team 10 she had to pay close to ,000 upfront including more than ,500 in rent difference.She understood some of the fees, but for her “to pay the difference, I think that’s really harsh on their side.”Team 10 called and sent several emails to 5025 Apartment managers. Nobody would answer any questions.“A lot of people are really having hard times and I would think some students couldn't even afford to go back to college if their parents had lost their jobs or something,” Ah Mow said. 2437

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With San Diego Comic-Con fans missing the convention in-person this year, some have instead left a tribute across the street from the convention center.Fans of the pop culture event recently began leaving flowers, t-shirts, and notes of their memories from past Comic-Cons outside TinFish — a popular site for people watching and off-site SDCC experiences every year.Chris Morrow, one of the organizers of the shrine, says the tribute was organized as a way for fans to continue connecting over their shared love of the convention.RELATED: San Diego Comic-Con 2020: What to know about SDCC@Home"Residents from San Diego County got together to show love and respect to Comic-Con. The popular arts convention is online this year and residents wanted to let everyone know San Diego Comic-con is not forgotten and we will see them back in person 2021 in San Diego," Morrow wrote.She says that they're asking fans to socially distance and drop off a note or flowers until Monday, July 27. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When professors at San Diego City College weren't prepping for fall semester, they were getting in on a little TikTok action thanks to English professor Christy Ball."I watched a lot of TikTok this summer, I fell in love with all the silliness in America and I really needed it when all the bad news was coming and coming," Ball said.She teamed up with 30 of her colleagues "to let students know we understand this isn't the ideal learning environment but that we believe in them, and we are so committed to their success and we're going to work with them the whole way." Together, they created a 2-minute TikTok-inspired clip with messages like "We're in this together," "You're not alone," and "We are listening."The video's editor and SDCC English professor Kevin Gossett said, "Putting something out like this is a good reminder that we're ready for this. We've been doing months and months of training in so many different ways just for this moment to support you."Gossett said it took a few weeks to edit the video but the hardest part was teaching writers how to TikTok."I did zoom recording sessions where I was walking them step-by-step. I'm like 'Throw it in air so it looks like someone threw it at you' because a lot of people didn't understand 'film magic.'"Ball added, "We recognize this is super strange seeing your class and their kids in the background, pets everywhere, so we wanted to play with that and have fun with the video."Overall, Ball said she wanted one message in the video loud and clear: "We care more about their well being than we do the assignment, we know we can help them get the work done. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - US Coast Guard officers will be out in full force over the holiday weekend. They've launched Operation Dry Water to help cut down on the number of arrests for people boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol."We want everybody to have a great time and do it in a safe manner," says Lt. Commander Ellen Motoi, the Chief of Enforcement for the San Diego Sector of the Coast Guard."We're going to have a lot more boats out there from the local side, as well as Harbor Police. They'll be promoting safety and looking for boaters under the influence," says Motoi.Alcohol is the leading cause of boating accidents, according to the Coast Guard. They look for erratic speed, dangerous course headings and boats coming too close to other vessels as warning signs that someone may be drunk while operating a boat.Operation Dry Water is a nationwide program. In 2018, they made 494 BUI arrests and issued 7,305 other citations.Like driving, the legal limit for alcohol while operating a boat is .08. Anyone arrested for BUI could face jail time, a loss of their license/credentials and a hefty fine.Aside from BUI, Motoi says the emphasis of Operation Dry Water focuses on safety."It's not worth it," says Motoi. "We encourage everyone to think twice before you get on a boat."Motoi says the most common mistake people make is not to wear a life jacket. The Coast Guard says 80% of all drownings happen because people aren't wearing one.The Coast Guard also wants boaters to know they shouldn't shoot off flares or fireworks from their boats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With over 10,000 employees worldwide, software company Teradata is making San Diego its global headquarters.They're growing the current Rancho Bernardo office by 65,000 sq/ft, equipping it with amenities designed to attract high-tech talent.The upgraded campus features a fitness center, yoga/pilates room, spin studio, fresh-ground coffee machines, new whiteboards, and play spaces featuring games like shuffle board and foosball.In the headquarters unveiling Monday, executives also revealed the company's new branding and logo.They plan to work with partners like UC San Diego to recruit top talent to the company.Teradata was previously headquartered in Dayton, OH, employees there were offered relocation packages.Teradata plans to hire 200 more employees in the coming months, bringing its San Diego workforce total to over 1,000. 863
