Like colleges and universities across the country, Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts was forced to experiment with a complex new plan this year that allowed more than 5,000 students to come back to campus. At the same time, the university had to institute rigorous new guidelines to keep COVID-19 from spreading. The key to success has been testing. Every student is required to get tested at least twice a week."The testing frequency matters,” said Tuft's University President Anthony Monaco.“If you wait a week or 10 days to test someone, they could be fully symptomatic and spread it to an apartment or dorm cluster."University officials say testing has prevented any major outbreaks. So far, the university has conducted 76,000 tests, and 36 students have tested positive since Aug. 3. Most notable though is the university's positivity rate is at .05 percent."It was not just about protecting their own individual health, it was also about protecting the vulnerable residents who live in and around the university," Monaco said.To keep any student who may test positive from spreading the virus, the university has constructed an extra 200-modular units of dorm space. The idea of the modular facilities is to give campus health officials a contained area to monitor students who test positive for the virus, while at the same time, keeping them out of the general population. But not every college is testing as frequently as Tufts. A recent survey conducted by the College Crisis Initiative at Davidson College looked at 1,400 schools nationwide. A majority of which had no testing plan in place, which health experts say has led to many of the outbreaks major colleges and universities have seen throughout the fall. There's also another lesson Tufts and other universities have learned about managing their student populations."Don’t ignore your off-campus students,” Monaco added. “Many just focused on on-campus and didn’t get them involved in testing or protocols." 1991
Las Vegas-based KTNV spoke with people who spotted O.J. Simpson at The Cosmopolitan Wednesday. Simpson was thrown out of the hotel-casino after accusations of being drunk. According to two witnesses, Simpson wasn't seen drinking and was not being unruly."He was very nice, very cordial," said Michelle Messer.Simpson's lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, told KTNV that the story about Simpson being drunk at The Cosmopolitan is completely untrue.LaVergne says that Simpson is a social drinker, meaning he usually orders one drink and sips on it while socializing, and that he was at the Cosmopolitan to eat chicken wings.LaVergne also told KTNV that the hotel-casino had apparently decided before Simpson's visit to trespass him from the property. LaVergne says that after Simpson was notified, he left the hotel-casino quietly. In addition, Simpson is challenging anyone with proof that he was drunk and belligerent to come forward. He is also taking steps to make sure that his probation officer is clear about what happened. LaVergne pointed out several times that the hotel-casino has the right to ban anyone they want for any reason. ORIGINAL STORYAccording to TMZ, O.J. Simpson was allegedly thrown out of the Cosmopolitan hotel-casino in Las Vegas on Nov. 8 and banned from the property for life. 1346
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Doing Christmas on the cheap isn't a bad thing. This year especially, it can be a necessity. KIDS IN QUARANTINE"2020 was rough for everybody," said Las Vegas mom Danielle Willard. She and her husband Benjamin have been fortunate enough to keep their jobs, but their family is still feeling the effects of the pandemic. Their kids are currently quarantined after being exposed to COVID-19, and the family knows they're not alone."Thousands of families go through this in Clark County every day," said Danielle.BIGGER THAN ALL OF USThen there are millions of others around the world. Something their whole family is well aware of thanks to the internet and social media."The kids are now realizing this is global. It's huge. It's bigger than all of us," said Benjamin.MONEY WAS FLYINGSo the Willards are doing things a little different this Christmas."Looking back at everything we bought for the kids in previous years, it was almost like money was flying and they didn't understand the value behind it and where it came from," said Danielle.STOP & THINKSo mom and dad came up with a reasonable budget and gave the kids very specific categories for Christmas gifts: things you need, things you want, books and clothes."We had to help them through the choice. What do you do most with your time? What are your hobbies?" said Benjamin."It makes them stop and think, what's really important to them," said Danielle.HELPING OTHERSThey also added a spot for giving something to someone less fortunate."They were extremely excited to be able to help, especially when we explained not everybody's in the position we are," said Danielle. The Willards say this year's wish list is saving them a lot of money while helping them to reflect on what's important and counting their blessings.NOT BUYING AS MANY GIFTS"There are families that won't have a Christmas at all," said Danielle. Some people may feel an extra emotional burden from not being able to buy as many gifts for loved ones this year, but Psychotherapist Caitlin Carmody says there are other options."There are so many different ways we can show people love and affection. It doesn't have to cost money," said Carmody.CREATING COMBATS ANXIETYInstead of buying presents, Carmody suggests making them with your family."The act of even creating helps combat that anxiety and depression," said Carmody.Quality time is also a gift that's just as meaningful, even if it's done virtually."So if we can reframe it as not something that we're losing, but maybe as a time of growth, or an opportunity to make new traditions and new memories," said Carmody. This story was written by Tricia Kean by KTNV. 2672
