DUNHUA, Jilin, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- When a flash flood struck their village ten days ago, 55-year-old Fu Bailin and his relatives had no time to take any belongings as they fled, except for a bill of debt."All our belongings have been swept away. My 100-square-meter house was flattened. My 2.5-hectares of cropland was destroyed," said Fu, a soybean and corn farmer at the Yaodianzi Village in Dunhua City, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in northeast China's Jilin Province. All the houses of the 286 families in the village were destroyed. Fu's family, including Fu, his 70-year-old father, his wife and son, along with their fellow villagers, now live in temporary tents in the local forest police headquarters in Dunhua. The forest police also provide meals for them.Floods have left 85 people dead and 66 missing in Jilin over the past two months, local authorities said Saturday.More than 5 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 1.5 million people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, almost 82,000 houses have collapsed and 198,000 others have been damaged, the statement said.Economic losses were estimated at 45 billion yuan (6.6 billion U.S.dollars), it added. In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.Compounding the problems, more downpours were forecast to hit the province in the coming two days.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, has risen to 1,239 as of 4 p.m. Saturday, with 505 still missing, local disaster relief headquarters said. The county education department said Saturday that primary and middle schools in Zhouqu will start the autumn semester on Aug. 25, ten days later than scheduled. This was because hundreds of homes and one primary school were buried and more schools were damaged or inundated in water. Many school classrooms are also being used as temporary shelters.By Saturday noon, power supply was resumed in 8,375 homes, or 76 percent of all affected in the blackout.Vegetables were on sale for the first time on Saturday, nearly a week after the mudslide buried the only vegetable market in Zhouqu.Local authorities ordered 8,400 kg vegetables from neighboring Longnan City and they were sold Saturday afternoon at the same or even lower prices prior to the disaster.Downpours from Wednesday night to Thursday morning have triggered severe floods and mudslides in Longnan, leaving 33 dead and 63 missing, local government said.A major road into the counties of Chengxian and Huixian in Longnan was reopened Saturday night after being damaged in the floods.More than 500 troops and 26 doctors have arrived in the hardest-hit Chengxian, where at least 20 people were killed and more than 10,000 residents had been relocated, to join in the rescue operations. In Gansu's neighboring province of Sichuan, floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains this week have killed at least 10 people and left another 57 missing. In Wenchuan of Sichuan alone, the epicenter of an 8-magnitude quake in May 2008 that left 87,000 people dead or missing, the floods had left 38 people missing by 3 p.m. Saturday. Some regions in Sichuan received a rainfall of more than 200 millimeters between Thursday and Saturday, prompting water levels in many major local rivers to rise above warning levels.Heavy rains also wrecked the eastern province of Shandong this week, forcing the evacuation of 204,500 people, damaging 547,100 hectares of crops, toppling 15,873 houses and causing a direct economic loss of 2.38 billion yuan (350 million U.S. dollars).China suffers the worst flood in at least a decade this summer. Floods and other rain-triggered disaster had left more than 2,300 people dead and further 1,200 missing nationwide this year.

WUXI, Jiangsu, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Yuan Longping, known as the "father of hybrid rice", said on Sunday that his team was working on a new version of high-yield hybrid rice and might complete it in 2012.Yuan, director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center and a faculty member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, made the remarks at the World Expo's third theme forum, which opened on Sunday in Wuxi, in east China's Jiangsu Province. The new hybrid, the phase-III super hybrid rice, was expected to yield 13.5 tonnes of rice per hectare, Yuan said. The previous hybrid, the second-generation super hybrid, was released for commercial production in 2006, yielding 9 tonnes of rice per hectare, on averageRice is a major food crop that feeds more than half of the world's population, Yuan said.China is now planting 440 million mu (29 million hectares) of rice per year, with an average output capacity of 6.3 tonnes per hectare.Among the acreage, hybrid rice accounts for about 57 percent of the total, with an average output capacity of 7.2 tonnes per hectare."The average yield of hybrid rice is at least 20 percent more than that of inbred rice, feeding 70 million more people annually," Yuan said.China is faced with a challenging grain situation this summer because of strong rainfalls in the south during the summer harvest season. Other problems include droughts in northern grain production areas and lingering low temperatures in the south.According to the Ministry of Agriculture, China needs to maintain an annual grain output of 500 million tonnes to feed the nation's 1.3 billion people.China's summer grain output rose six years in a row to top 123.35 million tonnes in 2009, which was 2.6 million tonnes more than the previous year."Hybrid rice will play a key role in ensuring food security worldwide in the new century," Yuan said."If 50 percent of the world's rice paddies were planted with hybrids, rice production could be increased by another 150 million tonnes, and 400 to 500 million more people could be fed," he said.Yuan believes food security is "a war people can not afford to lose" ."The global economic downturn will always end, but food security is the problem we have to face every second," Yuan said.Statistics from the United Nations showed about 1 billion people were suffering from hunger and malnutrition and every six seconds saw a child dying of hunger or related diseases. With the theme "science & technology innovation and urban future", the two-day forum focuses on innovations in science and technology. The previous two theme forums of the World Expo centered on communications and cultural heritages.Yuan started working on hybrid rice in 1964."I often drive my car to go to rice paddies to do research," said the 80-year-old, "The only difference is that when I was young, I rode a bicycle or motorcycle ....you could attribute it to improving life."Hybrid rice has also been commercialized in other countries, including India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Bangladesh and the United States."For the benefits of the world' s people, we are well prepared to help other countries develop hybrid rice," he said.
