SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two separate clinical trials for phase three COVID-19 vaccines will resume in San Diego next week after AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson paused their students to find out why some participants became ill.“Pauses like this are absolutely common in large phase three trials so people should not be alarmed,” said Dr. Susan Little, the trial director for both studies that UC San Diego is set to take part in. “Studies will only resume when they are deemed safe for the study participants.”Little said not only are pauses like this common, but they also prove that the safety review process is working as it should.“Part of the reason we want people to understand that these are common is they will probably occur again, AstraZeneca with 30,000 people, Johnson & Johnson 60,000 people. It would be surprising if we don’t have another pause,” she explained.Little said once a trial is paused, it is immediately investigated by the independent Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB). The board reviews the issues and determines if they are related to the trial.“In this case, the event and all other safety events were reviewed and deemed not related,” she said.The AstraZeneca study is scheduled to start on Monday, and UCSD will be using a mobile vaccine clinic that will travel from Chula Vista, La Mesa, and Imperial Beach.The Johnson & Johnson study is scheduled for Tuesday in National City, where trailers have been set up as a clinic at El Toyon Park.“We are signing people up right now to have scheduled visits next week,” said Little. “Safety will always remain the number one priority for study participants.”Those interested in participating in the study can sign up here.Participants must be 18 years or older and in generally good health. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new technology just reached San Diego and Border Patrol agents say it’s going to help them do their jobs faster, easier and more efficiently. They’re called Mobile Video Surveillance Systems. Each unit is grounded to a Ford F150, the controls to operate the cameras mounted on a mast in the bed of the truck are inside. San Diego is the second place in the nation to have truck like these. Border Patrol says they’ll be rolling out in just a couple days. The first place to have Mobile Video Surveillance System trucks is Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Michael Scappechio is a supervisory with Border Patrol and he tells 10 News, “the looming threat of the migrant caravan in Tijuana and more people potentially on the way we need to make sure we’re prepared for that”. The two cameras allow the agents to see two pictures at all times, a daytime camera and an infrared camera. While Scappechio says the need for this kind of technology is needed in San Diego, it’s their increased rate of arrests that landed the trucks here, “nearly a 90 percent increase is significant, that’s going to get attention, that’s going to get resources, that’s going to get man power, infrastructure and technology”.Border Patrol tells 10 News these trucks won’t replace the border wall but instead, will go hand in hand with it. 1334

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While many Americans may be divided on whether they will get a COVID-19 vaccine once one is available, National City’s mayor is about to be part of the trial process.“I’m excited, kind of nervous,” said National City Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis. “As a leader, I will step up, physically, mentally, and emotionally for my community because we need to be part of the solution.”After learning more about Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Phase 3 vaccine trial happening in National City, Sotelo-Solis said she decided the right move was to apply to become a trial participant herself.“I believe, as a leader, you should demonstrate trust in the system,” she said. “I was able to ask more detailed questions; I am a survivor of melanoma cancer, you know, getting all those questions answered. I will be an active participant in the vaccine trial starting Friday.”Johnson & Johnson is aiming to recruit 60,000 people worldwide to take part in its trial. UC San Diego is participating in the study locally and looking to enroll 2,000 volunteers.Trailers that act as a vaccine clinic have been set up at El Toyon Park in National City, and the trial resumed last week.Across the county, Hispanic and Latino communities have been hit the hardest by COVID-19. The Chicano Federation has been working as part of the San Diego Latino Health Coalition to address the issues and provide helpful information about vaccine trials.“One of the things we recognized early on is that our Spanish speaking community and Latino community here in San Diego needed more education about vaccine trials,” said Nancy Maldonado, President, and CEO of the Chicano Federation. “We want our community, particularly our Spanish speaking community, to have all the education they need around the vaccine and around vaccine trials.”Maldonado said the goal is to make sure Southbay residents have the information they need to make informed decisions, and she applauds Sotelo-Solis for her efforts.“One of the best ways to gain trust is to lead by example and not ask someone to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself,” said Maldonado.“If I can help someone trust in vaccine trials and medical systems as a whole, we can really start chipping away at building true and significant trust,” said Sotelo-Solis.Sotelo-Solis said she will have her blood drawn and get a shot as part of the trial on Friday morning.UCSD is still recruiting participants for this trial. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Padres utilized the team's newly-expanded protective netting for the first time Friday afternoon while hosting a high school baseball game between La Costa Canyon and Vista.The net now extends beyond both dugouts, stretching from section 115 down the left field line to section 116 down the right field line.  Most of the net stretches 24 feet high, before tapering.  Netting will also be added above the dugouts and the wall along the warning track.In a statement revealing the details of the changes, Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler and General Partner Peter Seidler said, "We feel the new design drastically improves the safety of our patrons, while the state-of-the-art materials will have a minimal effect on the fan experience as it pertains to the view of the field and sightlines of our ballpark."10News spoke with several fans at Petco Park Friday. While all said they understood and appreciated the safety concerns, not all of them like the change. "I would probably lean toward keeping it the way it was," said Mark Stephens, a Padres ticket plan holder. "Stephens expressed concern that the netting could be an obstruction to the view from some seating locations. He also worries that the netting will reduce the opportunities for fans in those sections to catch foul balls, which is a reason many people choose to sit in the areas behind and just past the dugouts. Stephens believes fans should be paying more attention to the action on the field, so they can see a ball coming their way. "My personal feeling is that people could avoid 85% of the problem if they just watch the game."Another fan, Brian Beaumont, agrees, saying too many people at games are distracted. "The netting might be a sign of the phone age. The smart phone and the not-so-smart fan."The Padres are one of several teams who have extending their netting this off-season.  It follows an incident last September at Yankee Stadium when a foul ball hit a one-year-old girl in the head. She suffered several broken bones and could have permanent damage from the impact.In a similar incident last season, a man in Chicago, Peter Loos, was hit squarely in the eye by a foul ball while watching a game at Wrigley Field. Despite several surgeries, doctors say he will likely never regain vision in that eye. Loos is now suing Major League Baseball, arguing not enough is done to protect fans. 2426
