The US surgeon general issued an advisory Thursday recommending that more Americans carry the opioid overdose-reversing drug, naloxone.The drug, commonly known as Narcan, can very quickly restore normal breathing in someone suspected of overdosing on opioids, including heroin and prescription pain medications.Dr. Jerome Adams emphasized that "knowing how to use naloxone and keeping it within reach can save a life." To make his point, Adams relied on a rarely used tool: the surgeon general's advisory. The last such advisory was issued more than a decade ago and focused on drinking during pregnancy.Adams noted that the number of overdose deaths from prescription and illicit opioids doubled in recent years: from 21,089 deaths across the nation in 2010 to 42,249 in 2016.America's top doctor attributed this "steep increase" to several contributing factors, including "the rapid proliferation of illicitly made fentanyl and other highly potent synthetic opioids" and "an increasing number of individuals receiving higher doses of prescription opioids for long-term management of chronic pain.""Research shows that when naloxone and overdose education are available to community members, overdose deaths decrease in those communities," Adams said. Naloxone is used by police officers, first responders and emergency medical techs to reverse opioid overdoses. The wife of a Marine veteran self-deported to Mexico on Thursday rather than be arrested by immigration officials.The Associated Press reports that Alejandra Juarez and her eight-year-old daughter boarded a plane at Orlando International Airport Thursday after a teary goodbye with her husband and 16-year-old daughter.Jaurez had been told earlier this week that she would be deported Aug. 3 after Rep. Darren Soto could not pass legislation to keep Jaurez in the US.In a statement issued to CNN earlier this week, ICE says "Juarez was initially apprehended and removed from the country after attempting to enter illegally from Mexico in 1998. The World Health Organization announced Wednesday that a coalition of nations and organizations are contributing billion to assist poorer nations fight the coronavirus.The two biggest contributors were the United Kingdom and Canada.The WHO says the “ACT-Accelerator, which was launched just five months ago, is an unprecedented global collaboration of the world’s top international health organizations working together to accelerate the development, production, and equitable delivery of COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines.”The WHO said an additional billion is needed to realize its goals of producing 2 billion vaccine doses, 245 million treatments and 500 million tests. The WHO is working with the World Bank to secure billion in funding, which has to be first ratified by its shareholders.The United States government did not contribute to the fund as the government stopped funding the WHO in April. The University of Iowa ticket office says they are suspending ticket sales for the upcoming football season.In a statement on their ticket website, school officials said that those who renewed their season tickets and paid their per-seat contributions by June 30 would be included in any potential seating plans for Kinnick Stadium.The university also announced that the Hawkeye Express would not operate for the upcoming season because of the potential of reduced capacity.“Hawkeye fans are excited about the upcoming season, and we appreciate their continued enthusiasm and support,” said Henry B. and Patricia B.
