Meghan Markle is now a fully fledged member of the Church of England after the American actor was reportedly baptized and confirmed in a secret ceremony at St James's Palace in London this week.Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby administered the holy sacrament in a 45-minute service on Tuesday evening at the palace's Chapel Royal with her fiance, Prince Harry, by her side, UK media outlets reported, quoting the Daily Mail.Kensington Palace has not made a public statement but Prince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Wales, were also said to have been among the handful of guests in attendance.Welby was reportedly asked to lead the service by Markle, 36, with whom he has developing a close bond after providing guidance on the rites and sacraments of the Church in recent weeks. As part of the ceremony, holy water from the River Jordan was poured on Markle's head, the Mail reported. It was not necessary for Markle -- who attended a Roman Catholic high school but was brought up Protestant -- to convert in order to marry Prince Harry, but she announced at the time of her engagement that she would do so anyway before their wedding in mid-May.Lambeth Palace, the official London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, decline to comment Thursday when asked about the service.Markle's formal acceptance into the Anglican Church is the latest arrangement by the royal couple ahead of their wedding in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in May.The move appears to be a mark of respect to the Queen Elizabeth II, who is the head of the Church of England.Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Harry's brother, William, was confirmed shortly before her wedding in 2011. Neither William or Catherine were present on Tuesday evening, the Mail reported. The decision to conduct the rite at the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace will hold special importance for Prince Harry. His body of his mother, Diana, the late Princess of Wales, lay there for a week prior to her 1997 funeral. More recently, it was the chapel chosen to host the christening of Prince George in 2013.Female empowerment 2116
Mario Batali is being sued by a woman who claims the celebrity chef kissed and groped her at a Boston restaurant and bar last year, according to court documents obtained by CNN.The suit comes several months after Batali first?faced allegations of sexual misconduct.Natali Tene states in a suit filed this week that Batali rubbed her breasts, kissed her repeatedly and groped her buttocks and groin area during an encounter at a Boston-area restaurant in April 2017.Tene did not know Batali personally but was familiar with his career, according to the suit. She says when Batali offered to take a selfie with her, she accepted. The alleged assault happened when Tene was in his proximity under the belief they would be taking a photograph together, the suit says.Representatives for Batali have not returned CNN's request for comment regarding the suit."What Mario Batali did to Natali was disgusting and vile," Tene's lawyers, Eric Baum and Matthew Fogelman, said in a joint statement to CNN. "Batali sexually assaulted our client in open view and without hesitation. He has shown no remorse. His actions cannot go unanswered."In December, restaurant news website Eater published a report in which four unnamed women, some of whom worked for Batali, claimed the chef touched them inappropriately "in a pattern of behavior that appears to span at least two decades."Batali later said in a statement to CNN that he was "deeply sorry" and apologizing "to the people I have mistreated and hurt.""That behavior was wrong and there are no excuses," he said.Batali left his ABC daytime series "The Chew" in light of the allegations. The Food Network also halted its plans to bring Batali back to its programming lineup. In May, Batali's restaurant group ended its partnership with him after allegations of sexual misconduct against him prompted a police investigation.Anderson Cooper, reporting for a segment of CBS's "60 Minutes" in May, sat down with several of women who say that sexual harassment and assault were common in restaurants owned by Batali.Shortly after it aired, the NYPD confirmed to CNN that it was investigating "allegations raised in the '60 Minutes' report" and had spoken to half a dozen women. One accuser told CNN that authorities questioned her in February, indicating that an investigation has been going on for months. At the time, Batali released a follow-up statement to CNN "vehemently" denying any allegations of sexual assault. 2478

MANHATTAN, N.Y. — Workers installed 192 new glittering Waterford crystal triangles on Times Square's New Year's Eve ball on Sunday in preparation for a pandemic-limited celebration on Thursday. The ball is a 12-foot-diameter geodesic sphere covered with more than 2,000 crystal triangles of various sizes. Some new crystals are swapped in every year. This year's addition features a new “Gift of Happiness” design represented by a sunburst of bright cuts radiating outward. The ball, blazing with more than 32,000 LED lights, will be dropped at 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve to ring in 2021.The Times Square celebration will be much smaller than usual because of the coronavirus pandemic. There will be fewer than 100 people to ring in 2021 in person.Doctors, nurses, teachers, grocery store employees and transit workers will be invited to enjoy the celebration in socially distanced pens while everyone else watches from home.More than 180 million Americans and perhaps one billion worldwide are expected to watch the Times Square celebrations virtually online or on a free NYE app.The event will be headlined by Gloria Gaynor, Jennifer Lopez, Billy Porter and Jimmy Allen. This story includes reporting from Magee Hickey on PIX11.com. 1243
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Former Marine pilot Amy McGrath has overcome a bumpier-than-expected Kentucky primary to win the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination. She fended off progressive Charles Booker to set up a big-spending showdown with Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the fall.McConnell is seeking a seventh term.Voting ended June 23, but it took a week until McGrath could be declared the winner Tuesday due to the race’s tight margins and a deluge of mail-in ballots. The outcome seemed a certainty early in the campaign but became tenuous as Booker’s profile surged. The Black state lawmaker highlighted protests against the deaths of African Americans in encounters with police. 708
