SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SDG&E announced Fire Safe 3.0 innovations to advance wildfire safety at its headquarters in Kearny Mesa Tuesday.It's the power company's plan to use more advanced technologies to improve wildfire safety. Instead of using weather data updated every 10 minutes, they utilize data updated every 30 seconds instead. SDG&E's chief meteorologist explained they're using artificial intelligence-based models that make weather data more accurate and they're monitoring more than 500,000 trees in the area using a "Vegetation Risk Index."It helps determine how those trees might impact power lines or become fuel for fires. SDG&E also announced plans to open a Fire Science and Innovation Lab next year. 734

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified School District is moving forward with plans to build a new elementary school in the Civita neighborhood of Mission Valley.In May, the District approved a plan to purchase land from Civita developer Sudberry Properties. Now, SDUSD has plans ready for a 2-story, 24 classroom campus, full of modern amenities. It will be able to hold 5-600 students."With new development in the area, we expect new families to come in. Those families are going to need an elementary school to attend," says District Facilities Communications Supervisor Samer Naji."Right now if you live in Mission Valley and have a young kid, you gotta drive out of Mission Valley to get them to school and get them from school. So a local school for those families is absolutely necessary," Naji adds.Sudberry has plans to build 5,000 new homes in the neighborhood. That, combined with other development on the north side of Mission Valley, is expected to bring a population boom. The District says they're trying to be ahead of the curve when it comes to having a school ready to serve the area.The new school will be on the corner of Civita Boulevard and Via Alta, just west of the new Civita Park. Right now, the land is occupied by a small grassy area and a dog park."The idea was to locate the school in a central location for the community that was really kind of civic heart or the social hub of the community," says Sudberry VP Marco Sessa. "We tried to create an environment here where really you can live, play, and work. A school is a big component of that."People who live in Civita say they're excited about the news, but also want to make sure it lives up to high academic standards."It's all about the level of education," says Russell Pontone. "It's one thing to build a beautiful building. But are you going to have the best teachers there? What kind of programs and resources are actually going to be available?"The District has not said how much it will cost to build the new school. Money from Proposition Z and local development impact fees will pay for the construction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego politicians are rallying for businesses affected by the county's move to the purple most restrictive tier.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey said the purple tier is taking a toll, hurting businesses that can't withstand another months-long closure.He said it could make or break them and their employees, "many of their employees have been let go now their second or third time as of yesterday and it's really heartbreaking to hear their stories."Bailey said he voiced his concerns on Instagram after learning Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten filed an adjudication request that stated, "San Diego's increased cases are not due to the sectors impacted by moving into a more restrictive tier." The most recent information from the county shows work is the location with the highest transmission rate at 30%. Businesses like restaurants and gyms that are affected by the purple tier restrictions make up about 20% of exposures altogether."So if these businesses are not actually contributing to the spread of COVID based on information from the County Health Officer then why would we be shutting them down in the first place?" Bailey said.Coronavirus cases are higher than they've ever been, at 64,768 as of Sunday.“This is a stark reminder that COVID is real, is spreading and must be taken seriously. At this point, we are pleading with the public to take action to slow the spread: wear a mask, physically distance, and limit contact with those outside of your household,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Co-Chair, County of San Diego COVID-19 Subcommittee.The purple tier closures went into effect Saturday.
