SAN DIEGO (KGTV) A local conservation group came dangerously close to running into the armed kidnappers who snatched a California tourist and her guide while on safari in Uganda. Kim Endicott and her driver were abducted at gunpoint from the Queen Elizabeth National Park across the border from Congo on April 2.They were released over the weekend. Details of the negotiated release have not been made public. Bill Toone is the director and founder of Ecolife Conservation in Escondido. He and several other members were leaving the park just as Endicott's group was arriving. Their guides stopped to talk. Endicott's group left and returned to their lodge. They returned to the park roughly four hours later. That's when they were ambushed. "I'm a little surprised that it ended as positively as it did. It could have obviously been really awful, and I kind of thought it might be, so it's thrilling that she's out of there," said Toone. Among other things, Ecolife Conservation provides safe, fuel efficient stoves for homes in remote areas of the world. The group has been working in Uganda for seven years. Toone said he's never felt unsafe. He was shocked to learn of the kidnappings."First of all, it's low season there and so there are very few tourists around anyway, so I guess that is why we became a target, it made it a little simpler, or she became a target," said Toone. Toone said in the days that followed the kidnapping; his group was required to have armed guards. He says the Ugandan government has been misleading on this issue."They say it's required to have armed guards when you go in the park. We've been going to the park for seven years. Every entrance to the park is through a gate where there are wildlife officials who check your vehicle in, they know who is in the vehicles, they check the licenses of the guides, never in all the years that we've gone there has anyone even suggested that you bring an armed guard. They've been saying she should have had a guard, that is not our experience at all," said Toone. Toone hopes things return to normal soon."The repercussions could be enormous. Uganda depends very heavily on tourism dollars. That's their incentive to do the kind of conservation they do there for the wildlife," said Toone who reiterated that the kidnappings are an isolated event."We have to keep it in perspective that this was one person in a country that actually has a really wonderful record for safety. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the drop of a banner, the Rock Church replaced the old sign of the Body Shop Strip Club purchased by the church.The church says they’re unsure what they’ll do with the building, but Thursday, they made it clear it’s no longer a strip club.It was quite the presentation, dozens of people, a stage and a sound system. The announcement the church made yesterday officially unveiled Thursday.RELATED: Rock Church buys former strip club in Midway DistrictWith Pastor Miles McPherson leading the charge, a Rock Church banner draped over the sign of the former strip club. “I’m very excited for what this won’t be, and how we can help the girls moving forward,” McPherson said. The church and several investors brought the club and its license for .2 million.Councilmember Lorie Zapf said the move is the beginning of a new future for the Midway with a vision of parks, families and a new welcoming look. “Midway is no longer going to be the red light district of yesteryear.”The problem with the plan, however, is the building sits just feet away from another strip club. “They started harassing me in April, I was called about 15 times by their broker,” said Kathleen Morgan, who owns Les Girls Theater.“It’s easy to stigmatize this type of business. But we don’t even have male bouncers, we don’t even serve alcohol, we’re old school burlesque,” Morgan said.On stage Thursday, was a pledge to take over Morgan’s place. “I’m hoping that they can acquire the property next door. Once the Midway plan is approved, they’ll be able to plan for the future of what’s allowed here by the zoning,” Zapf said.Morgan says investors are trying to driver her out. The church says they aren’t involved in that. “That’s something that will have to take its own course, we’re not necessarily pushing that,” said McPherson.Morgan also says the business has been vandalized recently, adding if she sells, it won’t be to the church. “In 50 years we’ve never had this type of vandalism, we’ve never had these types of issues. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— A Point Loma boy must now walk to and from school after a thief stole his custom BMX bike. San Diego Police need the public's help to find the man who took the boy's prized possession. BMX riding is 9-year-old Bradley Ramos' favorite pastime. It's a passion that runs in the family. His father, Aaron, dabbled it in as a child. So did Bradley's cousin, Tyler."This bike was actually his cousin's bike when his cousin was his age. Now his cousin is 21 years old, so the bike has been in the family for a while," Ramos said. That was, until Memorial Day morning. Bradley's mother noticed the bike was missing from their front porch."My bike and my helmet got stolen," Bradley said. The family's security camera captured a man walking away with Bradley's bike. The video shows the young man with arm tattoos wearing a hat and backpack. He looks to be wearing glasses and a distinctive white watch."It kind of sucks because I have to get rides to school now when usually, I'd ride my bike and it's way quicker," Bradley said. The bike theft is the second in as many weeks for the Ramos family. Last Monday, thieves made off with at least ,500 worth of tools from Ramos' work truck. "Since that's been happening, we've been bringing the bike in, and we didn't do it just that one night, and it was gone," Ramos said. The BMX bike has thin red wheels with a racing number plate in the front handlebars. It's not a common model, so the Ramos family is asking people to keep an eye out, and alert authorities if they spot it. To the man who made off with the Ramos' family heirloom, Bradley and his father have a stern message. "Give it back, and never come back to this neighborhood again," Bradley said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While Willy Wonka isn't expected to show up to San Diego Comic-Con, his famous promotion will appear before hungry fans.For the fourth year, the San Diego Convention Center has created its own chocolate bars that will be sold inside the center during Comic-Con, the center announced this week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Tuesday identified the two men shot and killed near Mountain View Park Sunday.Police say 33-year-old Tony Jackson and 37-year-old Robert Brown were shot near South 40th Street and Ocean View Boulevard. Both men were taken to the hospital where they later died.According to police, the victims were standing near the Mountain View Community Center when they were shot around 1:20 p.m. Sunday.RELATED: Two dead after Mountain View shooting  The suspect was described only as a black man wearing dark clothing.
