Farm life is not easy, but sometimes that life picks you.“When we were little boys, I think it was my dad pushing us out the door all the time,” said orchard owner Curtis Rowley, with a laugh. “As you get older, it gets it your blood and you seem to stay around.”Rowley is a fourth-generation farmer in rural Utah.“Here on the side of us, we have a tart cherry orchard,” Rowley said, motioning with his hand. “We also have a gala block of apples.”However, Rowley’s specialty is peaches.“I know when they are perfect, not by color, not but size, but when I cut them open and smell them,” he said.Knowledge passed down through his family taught him how to dodge the always humming farm equipment. He knows what to do when mother nature turns on the AC. Unfortunately, there are some things that even a seasoned farming family cannot plan for.“We were still pruning when the COVID-19 pandemic hit,” Rowley said.Like many in this business, Rowley relies on outside help for planting, pruning and harvesting. He uses the H-2A government program that allows U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals in to fill temporary agricultural jobs.“As they shut down the Mexico border at the end of March, our guys happened to be right there at the time,” he explained.Rowley said luckily, the group got through, but now, it is the harvest and it’s all hands on deck.He is feeling the pinch.“It’s really tight,” Rowley said. “I won’t tell you it’s perfect.”The window for picking does not stay open for long.“We have somewhere between three and maybe four days if we’re lucky,” he said.Rowley said he has tried other options, like offering jobs to people furloughed or laid off.“They’ll come and help for a bit, but as soon as their jobs open back up, they leave and that’s understandable,” he said. The timing of the harvest also coincides with schools starting.“To hire high school kids to pick apples is just not going to happen,” he said.Rowley said they will squeeze through the fall harvest, but others will not be as lucky.“There’s a lot of people still looking for help,” he said.As for the future, this farmer said his family will remain planted, ready to weather whatever storm comes their way.“We’re planning on being here farming and continuing to grow this fruit,” he said. 2278

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - The bluffs that collapsed in North San Diego County Friday, killing three people, are a known trouble spot to a local geologist.Former San Diego State University professor Dr. Pat Abbott has led several geology field trips to Grandview Beach to point out unstable cliffs. Abbott described the cliff as a “solid mass of sand grains cemented together” that suddenly gave way on a sunny and warm afternoon. Waves erode the shoreline in addition to groundwater that seeps into the bluffs, leaving behind white streaks of salt and creating cracks, Abbott said. RELATED: Three dead, two others injured in north San Diego County bluff collapseHe said the beachgoers who were beneath the cliffs wouldn’t have had time to escape. “By the time you hear it, that means it’s broken and it’s on the way; you don’t have time to react and leave,” said Abbott. He recommends anyone who visits the beach to stay away from the bluffs for safety.RELATED: INTERACTIVE MAP: Recent San Diego County bluff collapsesHe also says walls may not be the answer to protect beachgoers. “Walls don’t solve the problem, they push it into the future,” Abbott said. 1166

ERIE, Penn. - President Donald Trump said Tuesday to the crowd during his Make America Great Again rally that the state of Pennsylvania has been "shut down long enough." "Get your governor to open up Pennsylvania," Trump said during the rally.WATCH recap: Trump's rally in Pennsylvania comes just a day after the US Supreme Court upheld a ruling by the state's Supreme Court that allows election officials to count ballots received up to three days after the election.Trump also added that the pandemic is ending and normal life is returning."We’re rounding the turn on the pandemic," Trump said on Tuesday. "56% and it’s a record. Epic job growth. Safe vaccines that quickly end the pandemic. It’s ending. Normal life. That’s all we want. Do you know what we want? Normal life.”The New York Times reports that Democratic nominee Joe Biden leads Trump by an estimated eight percentage points.According to the Associated Press, First Lady Melania Trump will not accompany her husband due to a "lingering cough after contracting COVID-19."On Monday, Trump made two stops in Arizona to speak to supporters at rallies, where he took swings at Dr. Anthony Fauci, by calling him "a disaster."Trump also spoke about calling ExxonMobil executives if he needed to raise millions, which the oil and gas company categorically denied in a response on Twitter. 1355

Experts say those feeling the pain of the financial crisis the most are millennials. The generation has missed major milestones that past generations enjoyed in their 30’s and 40’s as a result of dealing with two major financial crises over the past decade. However, it may not be all gloom and doom for millennials. The economic cycles the generation has experienced early on could lead them to understand the economy and markets better, potentially leveraging that to greater future gains. Many millennials graduated and entered the workforce during the 2008 Great Recession. They were just hitting their prime, and then, this pandemic and a second major financial crisis hit.“It just feels not only like we can’t catch a break, but we can’t even get started without something coming along and taking away a lot of what we worked for,” said Erin Lowry.Erin Lowry is an author and wrote the books “Broke Millennial” and “Broke Millennial Takes on Investing”.“The big thing to consider for your financial future is this will be temporary,” said Lowry. "We are going to get through this just like we got through ’08.”Surveys conducted by the Urban Institute show at least 1 in 3 millennials are struggling financially right now, and millennials as a whole have less acclimated wealth at this stage in life than the prior generation. To change that, even during this recession, Lowry believes there are a few key things millennials can do.“You do want to think about doing, and I hesitate to say it like this, but the least damage currently,” said Lowry. She recommends minimizing the amount of debt you may need to take on to get through this economic downturn. Also, protect your credit scores as much as possible by making on-time payments.Pay the minimum if needed or contact your lenders to work out agreements that will not show missed payments on your credit report. In the future, you’ll want a healthy credit score to be able to qualify for mortgage loans or auto loans at a lower interest rate.Lastly, try to still contribute to your retirement plan even if it’s a little bit. If you are in a position where every penny counts right now, think about a time in the near future when you can start to again invest. That is important because, historically, the market will rebound. To recover on a better financial footing, you want to buy when the market is low, or down, and reap the gains as the economy recovers.“After 2008, we went on to have one of the longest bull runs in stock market history,” said Lowry. "We don’t know what is going to happen after the coronavirus recession, but you don’t want to miss out on potentially huge returns.”The possible advantage of going through two recessions early in life may be a better understanding of the economy and a stronger desire to understand the market, along with learning how to use the downturn as an opportunity for future gains. 2896
