SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego insurance agent who cheated 15 victims out of nearly .5 million was sentenced Wednesday to nine years in prison.Shawn Heffernan, 43, pleaded guilty in February to 29 felony counts of fraud and other charges, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.Heffernan would often convince clients to surrender existing life insurance policies and purchase new ones. The practice, known as “churning” or “twisting”, led to hefty commissions for Heffernan and steep penalties for clients, prosecutors said. Heffernan also collected investment funds and spent them on personal items including a Maserati, jewelry, and a lavish wedding, according to the District Attorney. Eight of Heffernan’s victims were senior citizens.“Stealing money from investors, and defrauding them out of their hard-earned savings, especially when some of the victims are senior citizens, is disgraceful and will not be tolerated,” District Attorney Summer Stephan said.  1011

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who is accused of falling asleep drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a Rancho Bernardo fire that killed his two children in 2017, has been sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison.Henry Lopez was convicted last September of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and recklessly starting the fire that killed 7-year-old Isabella and 10-year-old Cristos.Wednesday, victim impact statements were read aloud — including a statement by Lopez — before the judge sentenced Lopez to 12 years and eight months behind bars.“[The] defendant has completely and utterly failed to accept the consequences of his actions. These horrible deaths were completely avoidable. The defendants actions caused a lot of pain. Prosecutors say Lopez fell asleep with a lit cigarette that likely made contact with a defective cell phone, sparking the blaze. Lopez woke up to find his home on fire and tried to escape but passed out from the smoke, fire investigators said.His two children died in the blaze. Investigators say Cristos was burned to death and Isabella passed out from smoke inhalation and never woke up.Throughout the sentencing hearing Wednesday, heated moments erupted from Lopez's ex-wife and even one of the jurors."I told you if you continued on this path of reckless behavior something bad was going to happen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local casting director making it big in Hollywood after signing stars for a movie hitting theaters Friday.The movie, The Last Full Measure, is based on soldier William H. Pitsenbarger, Jr. who rescued more than 60 men during the Vietnam War. Casting Director Iris Hampton fell in love with the script the first time she read it, "I couldn't put it down, it was so beautiful." She was born and raised in San Diego in a military family and married a Marine Veteran, bringing the plot close to home.Hampton got into the business during a vacation to Hawaii. She said she went to the Magnum P.I. office and asked if they needed any help, "they said not right now, but why don't you come back in three months? So I came home, packed my bags and I went."Since then she's worked with big names like Chuck Norris and the Power Rangers. "I am going on my 28th and 29th season of that show," she said referring to the Power Rangers.Seven years ago she signed on to The Last Full Measure. The movie follows Pitsenbarger, Jr. during Operation Abilene in the Vietnam War. He descended from a helicopter while troops were under fire and rescued as many as he could, before he was killed.The film then follows the men who worked for decades to get Pitsenbarger, Jr. the Medal of Honor. "It ended up being 32 years they fought for him to get the medal of honor," she said."Pitts was a hero and a legend," Hampton said paratroopers idolize him.With a deep love and respect for the military, Hampton said this project is the pinnacle of her career.She signed stars like Samuel L. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A motorcyclist allegedly involved in street racing and other dangerous acts on San Diego roadways was arrested, the California Highway Patrol announced Wednesday.CHP officials said a search warrant was executed for 32-year-old San Diego resident Scott Anthony Meiner, who is linked to “numerous street racing and reckless driving incidents.”Meiner is also “believed to have fled from several police officers from various law enforcement agencies in San Diego County on numerous occasions,” the CHP said.Following the execution of the search warrants, Meiner was taken into custody and booked into San Diego County Jail on charges of felony evading, reckless driving, speed contest, and being an unlicensed driver.According to the CHP, Meiner was identified as the motorcyclist who was recorded on March 29 speeding 181 MPH on the southbound HOV lane of Interstate 15 in Mira Mesa. 907

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who reportedly threatened to “kill all the gays and children” at the San Diego Pride parade was charged with three bank robberies after authorities linked him to both the threats and the robberies. According to authorities, Andre Lafayette Holmes was linked to three bank robberies in San Diego County spanning from 2016 to 2019 after reportedly making the threats against Pride. FBI agents identified Holmes following threats he made to Pride organizers on July 10, 2019, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office. In the first of two late-morning calls to organizers of the parade, the caller said: : “I think I’m going to have to kill all the gays and the children.” He then repeated, “I’m going to have to kill the f------ and children.” The employee asked, “Sir, what’s your name?” The caller replied: “I don’t like them” and “I hate the f------," the U.S. Attorney's office says. Authorities say he then hung up the phone before calling again about four minutes later, stating: “F--- Donald Trump. I hate Hillary. I hate f---. I’m going to shoot up the Pride event.” San Diego Police were able to track Holmes down near Miramar College using his cellphone. After searching his vehicle and home, investigators found evidence linking him to the bank robberies, including a semi-automatic pistol, a rubber “old man” mask, a large bag of cash and clothes believed to have been worn by the bank robber. Holmes is accused of robbing a US Bank on Campo Road in Spring Valley on November 4, 2016; Mission Federal Credit Union in San Diego on June 14, 2018, and California Bank and Trust on Fifth Avenue, also in San Diego, on June 28, 2019.
