BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday confirmed it had started preparations for President Hu Jintao's visit to the United States early next year, which the ministry said would be profound and far-reaching for bilateral ties."China and the United States have maintained close communications about the visit, which will be very important and will bring far-reaching influence for bilateral relations in new era," spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told a regular press briefing.Although Hu's U.S. visit had long been under discussion, it was the first time that China's foreign ministry confirmed the visit and elaborated on its significance.Ma said both China and the United States would like to see a successful visit that will boost the positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship in the 21st century.At their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Toronto in June, U.S. President Barack Obama formally invited Hu to pay a state visit to the United States early next year. BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety supervisor will soon launch a nationwide inspection campaign on coal mines to crack down on illegal mining and prevent deadly accidents.A spokesman of the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) said Sunday the campaign, which starts on Oct. 10 and lasts until Nov. 30, will check whether accident-prone small coal mines of outdated capacity have been shut down according to state policies.Technological upgrades, merger and acquisition of coal mines will also be examined during the campaign, the spokesman said.According to the SAWS, 1,539 small coal mines of outdated capacity have to be closed in China this year to meet the country's carbon dioxide emission and pollution-reduction requirements.China's annual fatalities at coal mines had dropped from a peak of 6,995 deaths in 2002 to 2,631 in 2009, according to data from the SAWS.Six people were killed and 12 were injured in a coal mine gas outburst Sunday in southwest China's Guizhou Province, a spokesman with the provincial work safety bureau said.The accident occurred at around 1:20 a.m. Sunday in Xinglong Coal Mine in Tongzi County, Zunyi City of Guizhou, said the spokesman.Thirty-five people were working in the mine when the accident happened. Twenty-two people escaped, and another 12 were rescued.One worker missing was later found dead in the mine, and five died when being taken to hospital.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's growth is projected to average 10.5 percent in 2010 and 9.6 percent in 2011, driven by domestic demand, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a report Wednesday.The Washington-based international lending agency made the projection for the annual fall meetings this weekend of the 187-nation IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank."The slight moderation in recent activity is expected to continue through 2011 in light of tighter quantitative limits on credit growth, measures to cool off the property market and limit bank exposure to this, and the planned unwinding of fiscal stimulus in 2011," the IMF said in its report.The report said this year's sustained growth in retail sales and industrial production confirms that private sector activity has advanced beyond the lift from government stimulus."On average over 2010-11, private domestic demand is poised to contribute two-thirds of near term growth, and government activity about one third, whereas the contribution from net exports will be close to zero," the report said.Despite the robustness in domestic demand, the pickup in inflation in 2010 reflected mainly higher food prices rather than core inflation, the report said.The report said China's increasingly wide trading network is driving growth in numerous economies, especially commodity exporters.The report said Asia's medium-term growth depends on the rebalancing of drivers of growth -- greater reliance should be put on domestic markets instead of foreign demand.The report said such a rebalancing in China, the world's second largest economy, is critical to enhance the role of household consumption in domestic growth.The report also recommended that China implement reforms to health care, education, and pension systems to enhance the social safety net.

BEIJING, Aug. 31(Xinhua) -- China has cracked 278,000 criminal cases and broken up nearly 1,650 mafia-style gangs since it launched a campaign to maintain public security in rural-urban fringe zones and on campuses in January.About 256,000 suspects had been arrested as of Tuesday, according to a national working group on maintaining public security composed of officials from government agencies, including the Central Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Ministry of Public Security.Investigating and rectifying public security threats remains an arduous task, said Wang Lequan, deputy secretary of the Commission.The government will maintain its "strike hard" policy against mafia-style gangs, crimes involving guns and explosives, gambling, prostitution and drugs, Wang said. Authorities have "zero-tolerance" for such crimes, he added.
