LAS VEGAS, Nevada — A poem about the Oct. 1, 2017 mass shooting penned by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department captain was unveiled at police headquarters on Thursday. LVMPD Captain Harry Fagel is a lifelong poet. His poem "The Route" about the 1 October shooting was unveiled at police headquarters, marking the end of a series of 1 October remembrance events. After Fagel wrote the poem, art collector and Nevada School of the Arts president and CEO Patrick Duffy commissioned to have it transcribed onto a scroll by a calligrapher."In our community, there is a much-needed component of healing," said Duffy. "That's what this scroll and poem are essential and we hope is that it will help bring solace to others."The executive director of the LVMPD Foundation said he felt Fagel's words were a reminder of a kind of collective healing that's taken place in the year since the shooting."It was simply mind-blowing that someone could take such an awful tragedy and turn it into such a powerful reminder of the good that exists and the good that responded to that awful event," said Tom Kovach. "The Route" is on display in the lobby of LVMPD headquarters, which is open to the public. (KGTV) - The family of an 11-year-old boy who was killed in the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka held a celebration of life ceremony in Lakeside Wednesday night.They gathered on a trail in Oak Oasis County Park to remember Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, on what would have been his 12th birthday.About a mile down the trail, they unveiled a new bench with a plaque in his memory, telling future hikers to “Be like Kieran.”“Kieran’s mindset was always about helping others,” said Alex Arrow, his father who lives in Lakeside.“He was the greatest ray of light that my life has ever seen,” said Dhulsini de Zoysa, Kieran’s mother.Both parents described him as curious, intelligent and empathetic.“He was just a sponge. He took in everything regardless of the topic,” said his mother.Arrow said his son had dreams of becoming a neuroscientist, with the goal of finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. “I also grieve for what the world lost,” said Arrow. “That piece of shrapnel from the suicide bomber struck down a future champion against the unknowns of the brain.”In total, 259 people were killed in a series of coordinated bombings on April 21 in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. 1202

Las Vegas police are reporting that a cook at the Bellagio hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip, Alex Hernandez, was arrested on one count of embezzlement on Feb. 26 for reportedly taking food home.Bellagio security informed officers that Hernandez had been caught stuffing 25 lobster tails in his backpack and walking out the back door with them.The lobster tails were valued at around each, making the total haul worth about ,875.  456

LINCOLN, Neb. - Gov. Pete Ricketts doubled down on his opposition to medical marijuana in Nebraska on Monday after a legal challenge was mounted against a ballot measure seeking to legalize that in the state.“There is no such thing as medical marijuana,” Ricketts said during a press conference. “This is not something that would be prescribed by a doctor. It’s not going to be distributed through a pharmacy. These are dispensaries that would be in your communities.”Ricketts argued that in other states where it has been legalized, people show up to work “stoned” and are at greater risk for accidents on the job. He also argued that the cognitive development of children is impacted when they have access to marijuana."This is not a benign thing. This is a dangerous thing," Ricketts said.The comments come as the Nebraska Supreme Court is set to decide whether or not to let voters decide on medical marijuana in the state this November.Supporters of the measure had been collecting signatures for months, and Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen said they had enough to qualify the measure for the ballot.But Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner filed a challenge against the measure on Friday. An attorney representing Wagner said it violates state rules requiring ballot measures to focus on a single question. He argued the measure poses two separate questions: whether residents should have the right to use marijuana for medical purposes, and whether private companies should be allowed to grow and sell it.Supporters of the measure called the legal challenge “a last-minute attempt to derail the precious right of the people.” They are confident the measure will survive the legal challenge.While Ricketts is opposed to the ballot initiative, he said the court will ultimately make the final decision on whether or not it should go before voters. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Citizen Public Safety Oversight Task Force of La Mesa met Wednesday virtually, following two high-profile incidents involving the city's police department.The recently formed group is tasked with looking at whether La Mesa needs a police oversight committee and then decide what it will look like.The group's chair, Jamal McRae, realizes they are a temporary task force, but hopes it rolls over to become the permanent commission."We're still trying to educate ourselves as to what our committee will do, as far as, will be able to have subpoena power? Do we want subpoena power? We're still in the research phase." McRae said. "We're trying to determine whether we want to put this on a ballot to have individuals on the city vote on it, or if we wish the city council will just have the final say.McRae points out the idea for the task force came before the controversial incidents involving La Mesa police officers, and before the national calls for police reform following the death of George Floyd."We're a group of individual citizens that got together and wanted to make a change in the community after the Helix High School incident," McRae said. "So we have been running through some ideas for a few years, just among community members."McRae says the group understands the importance of their work and the urgency to complete their tasks. That's why they have scheduled three meetings next month. The meetings are scheduled for July 1, July 8, and July 15.They hope to present a plan and a sense of direction to the city council by the end of July. 1596
