CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man was arrested today on suspicion of trying to open a bank vault where some employees had locked themselves in to hide from the suspect, police said.Police received two calls from an employee of Wells Fargo Bank in the 1200 block of Broadway at 9:36 a.m. Saturday, according to Lt. Scott Adkins of the Chula Vista Police Department. The first call was about a man causing a disturbance outside the bank, and the second call was to report an attempted robbery by the same man inside the bank.Police arrived at the bank and arrested Elieser Hurta, 27, who was trying to open the bank's vault with a set of keys stolen from an employee, Adkins said.Hurta was unarmed and no employees were injured in the attempted robbery, the lieutenant said. One bank employee fainted during the incident, and some employees were found hiding inside the vault, he said.Hurta was arrested on suspicion of two counts of robbery in the theft of personal items from two bank employees, and one count of attempted robbery for trying to open the bank's vault, Adkins said. 1080

(KGTV) - The family of the man found in a barrel in San Diego Bay, near Chula Vista, is working toward closure two years after he disappeared.Omar Medina’s body was found Oct. 12, 2017, after a diver found a white, 55-gallon drum floating in the bay. I miss not meeting my nieces and nephews, I miss not having cousins for my kids." She spoke publicly for the first time this year at Chula Vista Police's Evening with Heroes fundraiser."Once they came in I felt a weight lifted off my shoulder[s] and that's what they've meant to me, they have definitely been that strength I'm not," she said police showed her family kindness and empathy."[Detectives] who put their photo on their desk and said they're out there. In the lot on Main Street and Fourth Avenue, visitors can buy anything from fish tacos and flowers to Mexican food and coffee.Just Coffee opened up about two weeks ago and owner Tyler Detweiler said he knew it was a bold move to start a new business in the middle of a pandemic, but it’s been successful so far.“People come here with the best moods. They’ve been making their own coffee for three months, four months now, and they want to go get a coffee that tastes like real coffee from a real espresso machine,” said Detweiler.He said another draw has been thanks to his business partner, the owner of Keto Dessert Company. James Baum usually delivers his sugar-free desserts to various locations in the Chula Vista area, so the partnership means one central place for locals to find his treats.Baum said his drive to sell keto dessert comes from his personal background.“They just thought I was a slow learner and then I got older and took this super long test of hundreds and hundreds of questions and realized I’m autistic,” said Baum.He said a sugar-free diet can benefit people with autism so he started the company as a way to bring dessert to keto diets. CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Owners of vacant or blighted property in Chula Vista will now be able to get a tax break in exchange for growing fruits and vegetables.The plan was approved Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors. The city is covered by an Urban Agriculture Incentive Zone which allows owners of more than 170 qualifying properties to submit plans to turn the land into community gardens or other agricultural uses.The program, created by a 2014 law, would lower property taxes based on per-acre value of the irrigated farmland.City officials say the aim of the plan is to increase green spaces, build community and educate the public about fresh food production."It's a great way to utilize parcels that maybe haven't been developed to their full potential," Supervisor Greg Cox said. "I think that's something we ought to see, frankly, in the other 16 cities in San Diego County and the unincorporated area."San Diego became the county’s first city to adopt the program in 2018 with 2,000 properties eligible for the program.Property owners must now apply with the city. The city says properties must be at least 0.1 acres, but no more than three acres and the entire property must be dedicated to agricultural use.If approved, the property owner and city would enter into a five-year agreement. 1315
