A woman and three children were found dead near the Mexico-Texas border, according to Hidalgo County, Texas Sheriff Eddie Guerra.Guerra said in a tweet that two infants, a toddler and a 20-year-old woman were found dead by border patrol agents near the Rio Grande River, southeast of the Anzalduas Park Sunday night. The bodies were found in Las Paloma Wildlife Management Area in the southeast corner of the state, the sheriff said. The FBI will take the lead on the investigation because the bodies were found on federal land.Agents from the FBI are on scene investigating with the aid of local authorities.Special Agent Michelle Lee with the San Antonio FBI told CNN, "it's an incredibly heart breaking situation, which seems to happen far too often." 764

A Utah woman was arrested last week for putting her child in a hot car with the windows up.Police arrived at Draper Park within five minutes of receiving a call from bystanders about the boy on July 2 at around 9 a.m., Draper Police Lt. Pat Evans said. When they arrived, officers found him in a vehicle that was turned off with the windows up in 82-degree heat, he said.Jesica Brown, 28, told police that she put her 4-year-old son in the car as punishment for misbehaving in the park, Evans said.A probable cause affidavit says an officer on the scene found the child's head was hot to the touch, he was sweating and his eyes were puffy, 651

Although many consider vaping a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes, researchers from the Ohio State University say it is not a good to make such claims at this time. Part of the reason is that research led by OSU Professor of Nursing and Medicine Loren Wold claims that there is growing evidence that e-cigarettes and their aerosol constituents, nicotine, carbonyl compounds, particulate matter, metals and flavorings can have adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. The study was published last week in journal Cardiovascular Research. The authors of the study say, however, that there is not sufficient data to make conclusions on the exact effect e-cigarettes have on the heart."Great caution and hesitation should remain concerning e-cigarette use until its health risk profile is better established," the study reads. "Therefore, additional high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to conclusively establish the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes."“Many people think these products are safe, but there is more and more reason to worry about their effects on heart health,” Wold said. The research comes as federal and state officials have been looking into why there has been an increase to the number of vapers who have suffered from lung disease due to vaping. As of last week, there have been 39 confirmed deaths and more than 2,000 cases of lung disease likely caused from vaping, the CDC said. Part of the problem, Wold said, is that the long-term effects of vaping is unknown. In 2011, there were 7 million people who used e-cigarettes. That number has since increased to 41 million. “We know these problems are seen in these studies looking at the short-term effects of vaping, but that research is inconsistent and the impact of chronic e-cigarette use is an outright mystery. The potential harm to the heart over time is essentially unstudied,” Wold said.To read more about the study, click 1950

A University of North Carolina study warns against the use of THC or CBD by women who are in the early stages of pregnancy. The study, which was published this week, tested the use of both synthetic and natural cannabinoids on mice. The results found that one-time exposure to cannabinoids early in a pregnancy can cause growth issues in a developing embryo. UNC said that this was the first time a study of this kind has been performed on mammals. Researchers said that they found the effects of CBD and THC are potentially very similar to what is seen in fetal alcohol syndrome. The researchers added that cannabinoid use disrupted signaling between molecules and cells that control growth and development. Researchers believe the results on mouse fetuses would be similar to human fetuses.“The development of the embryo in this time period is very similar across all vertebrates,” said Scott Parnell, a member of the UNC Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies. “In this study we also test a synthetic cannabinoid in zebrafish that yielded similar growth deformations as the natural CBs. Having the same results across animal models reinforces our findings.”The researchers administered enough CBD that is considered a therapeutic range for humans. The THC concentration was of similar levels to smoking marijuana. “It is concerning how little we know about the use of marijuana, its CBs, and products like CBD oil during pregnancy,” Parnell said. “We know that there is no safe period to drink alcohol during a pregnancy, and I think this research shows the same is likely true of marijuana use.”To read more on the study, click 1639
