If you recently waited in a crowded doctor’s office or you’ve called to make an appointment and were told the next slot available is in several weeks or months, you’ve already experienced the effects of America’s doctor shortage.It's become more common for doctors, like New Jersey urologist Dr. Thomas Mueller, to practice with a packed patient schedule."The amount of patients we see is borderline insane," Mueller says.“I'll be the first one to say I don’t think it’s the best thing in the world," he says. "The things that I do to combat it is I just invest a lot of time beforehand.”Mueller and the team of physicians at Delaware Valley Urology each see upward of 50-60 patients a day.And that’s still not enough. "With the baby boomers becoming, you know, in their 70s, there are a lot of people to be seen," the doctor says. "The overall structure of medicine, at least as far as training is concerned, they’ve never really increased the enrollment in medical schools.”Unless significant steps are taken, the Association of American Medical Colleges predicts the shortage is only going to get worse.“I think I am at my max (amount of patients)," Mueller says. "I don’t think I can do a whole lot more."To help with the issue, legislators are proposing several bills that would raise grant money for more medical residency slots, and to make it easier for foreign doctors to practice in the U.S.In addition, medical schools have increased scholarships. Some have even created specific residency slots for those willing to practice in rural areas.“There are folks who think that there is a shortage," says Dr. Bob Motley. "I think we have as much of a problem with the maldistribution.”Motley runs Thomas Jefferson University's Physician Shortage Area Program. “We have about 50% of all physicians in Pennsylvania that are actually clustered in three counties," he says. "But 75% of Pennsylvanians actually live outside those areas.”Motley’s program has graduated roughly 400 doctors, and almost 80 percent are now practicing in rural communities hit the hardest by this doctor shortage."There's a lot to be learned in health care and we definitely have not figured it out," Mueller says. "It’s not a broken system by any stretch of the imagination but it’s things that are ever changing. And I think everyone is striving to make it better.”In addition to seeing 50 to 60 patients a day, Mueller also trains residents to handle the patient load as it is now."It's not for the faint of heart," he says. JACKSON, MO. — A rescued puppy is attracting a lot of attention because of his cute resemblance to a unicorn.The nearly 10-week-old puppy, named Narwhal, has a tail-like appendage growing from his forehead.Narwhal was rescued over the weekend and sent to Mac's Mission in Jackson, which specializes in fostering animals with special needs.Mac's Mission founder Rochelle Steffen says Narwhal doesn't notice the extra tail and is otherwise a happy, healthy puppy.Although it looks like a tail, Narwhal cannot wag it. Steffen says the rescue group has been flooded with requests from people wanting to adopt Narwhal since his picture hit social media.But he'll remain at Mac's Mission so his caretakers can be sure the tail doesn't grow out of proportion to his face and cause him problems. 799

It’s Saturday night service at Northview Church in Carmel, Indiana. As parishioners pack the pews, they start singing about the power of giving. Preaching from the pulpit, senior pastor Steve Poe focuses the night’s sermon on how small donations can have a big impacts.This Indiana-based church is truly helping their neighbors in need! "Without this debt hanging over their heads."Northview Church worked with the organization RIP Medical Debt to purchase debt at pennies on the dollar. Founder Craig Antico explains how it works, and why they don’t know the names of the people that they’ve helped. “RIP Medical Debt abolishes medical debt for the poor and those in hardship,” Antico says. “The way that we do it is we go and buy medical debt from either hospitals, doctors, or even the collector investors to buy the debt to make them nonprofit.”A study in the American Journal of Public Health found that medical debt contributes to two-thirds of bankruptcy filings. So, debt relief like this can be life changing. “I could not come up with any words; I was so caught off guard,” says Lisa Sole, who is a recipient of a Northview Church donation. Sole used ,500 dollars to cover medical bills and other debt.“When you are granted the gift of debt being taken away from you, the amount of stress that it relieves off of your body is so healing,” she says.With that kind of healing, Sole was inspired to pass it on and pay it forward, saying it’s truly better to give than receive. “It’s exciting to see the next person’s acceptance and how they’re excited compared to us and the feeling you get,” she says. 2266
