SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police officer is showing his gratitude this holiday season after an incredible display of heroism.It was at the end of his graveyard shift when he heard panic over the scanner."It's moving pretty quick, ooohh standby. It went over the… it went over the cliff. I was not in pursuit. I just pretty much said 'I'm going,'" Wiese remembered.He rappelled down a 30-foot drop, MacGyvering a rescue rope with his 100-foot dog leash. He says adrenaline, police training, but mostly his father-instinct kicked in."I had a two-year-old daughter at home, so when I'm looking in the water, it's her who is floating in the water," Wiese said. His brave actions have since been recognized many times. He says it is a day he will always remember."I am most grateful this year, knowing that those two little girls have a second chance at life," Wiese said.Another unforgettable day for Wiese is April 27, 2019. He was on his way to get lunch with his family when he heard an active shooter call on the scanner. Moments later, he spotted the suspect. Without backup, he convinced the Poway Synagogue shooter to surrender. Officer Wiese took him into custody.Wiese says his competitive spirit motivates him to be a better version of himself every day, to show resilience and strength for his community."If you feel like you're going to win, then incidents like this, like at Sunset Cliffs, 'I'm going to win this incident. I'm going to save these girls in this man.' At the synagogue, 'I'm going to win. I'm going to go home to my family, and he is going to go to jail. and the community is going to be safe.'" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Amazon announced Tuesday it will create more than 200 new jobs in San Diego as part of a national expansion of its Tech Hubs.In a news release, company officials said plans are in place to expand offices in San Diego, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, New York, and Phoenix, which would lead to the potential addition of 3,500 new jobs.According to the company, there are more than 70 open tech and corporate roles in the San Diego area.With the addition of new tech and corporate jobs in San Diego, Amazon said it would add more than 40,000 square feet of office space near the UC San Diego campus.Some of the ventures being worked on at Amazon’s San Diego Tech Hub include games via Amazon Game Studios and a project that involves the launch of “Low Earth Orbit” satellites.Igor von Nyssen, Site Lead at the San Diego Tech Hub, said, “Amazon’s continued growth in our San Diego Tech Hub and the creation of these 200 new jobs is a testament to the strong and diverse pool of tech talent in this community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A school bus crashed into a San Diego Center for Children dormitory Wednesday afternoon, creating a massive hole in the side of the building.Officials say a San Diego Unified School District bus driver lost control of the bus on the 3000 block of Armstrong Street, causing the bus to collide with the building.No children were inside the building or the bus at the time of the crash. The bus driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution.Contractors have responded to the scene of the crash to assess the damage to the building. Officials with the center say all eight rooms in the dormitory are unusable following the incident. 659

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman says she was the victim of a violent attack inside her hotel room at the high-end Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.Jacquee Renna is accusing the front desk staff of handing out her room number and a key without her permission. The hotel is staying tight-lipped about the apparent security breach, but it's giving details to the courts."I haven't felt safe since then," Renna said. "Suddenly, I heard the door kind of jiggle and I thought [room service] was coming to get our plates," she explains. She and her boyfriend were finishing dinner inside their hotel room when she says her ex-husband was able to unlock the door and break through the security latch."I saw the key in his hands so he had the key," she tells us. "He threw me over onto the bed. I could see rage in his face."Court documents claim her ex-husband punched her boyfriend in the face, dragged him at least twenty feet and kicked him in the head. Renna says her ex-husband then ran out to the parking lot, where he apparently slashed her boyfriend's tires, before leaving."[My boyfriend] had bruises and scrapes. I think we were both really in shock," she says. "The Omni has a responsibility to provide safe and secure rooms to their guests," says her attorney, Robert Fitzpatrick. He's helping her sue the hotel chain for negligence.Renna says that after the attack, the hotel manager apologized to her and said the hotel's front desk person had given the key to her ex-husband. Fitzpatrick adds, "Omni should never have given a key to the hotel room and they should have not disclosed the hotel room number."Hotel room attacks are uncommon but have made headlines in Southern California.Earlier this year, Covina police say security video caught a pastor lurking outside a Los Angeles hotel room, touching himself as he watched two girls who were alone inside. Officers report he later forced his way into the room and assaulted an 11-year-old. He was charged, but has pleaded "not guilty".Disturbing 2014 security video out of Kern County captured a front desk worker handing a room key to a man accused of posing as a female guest's boyfriend, before he reportedly fumbled with the room's peep hole, went inside, and sexually assaulted the woman while she was sleeping. He's seen running out with his pants around his ankles. He was convicted and a jury found that the hotel was partially responsible for the assault.It begs the question, who is responsible for making sure hotels in San Diego are keeping guests safe?  According to the San Diego Hotel-Motel Association, the San Diego Tourism Authority, local hotel negligence attorneys and private security professionals. None of them knew of any local, state or federal authority that has oversight. Hotels are left to police themselves. The Omni Hotel chain denied our request for an interview to discuss the new lawsuit, citing that it doesn't talk about pending litigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Escondido Union School District school is suspending on-campus operations for the rest of the month after three positive COVID-19 tests.Three people in the Pioneer School community tested positive for the virus in separate, unrelated instances off-campus. Due to this, and the high case rate in the surrounding area, the school district says it is temporarily suspending all on-campus activities at Pioneer School through Nov. 30.The suspension includes pausing the school's hybrid instruction model and extended care, and moving students to virtual learning. The school's distribution of free, to-go meals will continue."EUSD’s decision to suspend on-campus learning at Pioneer School was not directed by a public health department. County health officials have continued to express confidence in EUSD’s health and safety protocols. This decision was made to ensure the stability of the educational program offered to our students, as well as to continue our commitment to ensuring the health and safety of our students and employees," a district statement read.The school says the campus closure will affect 449 students. On-campus instruction will resume on Dec. 1."We understand that an interruption of on-campus activities causes a huge disruption to our families and staff, but this action is necessary to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the community," said Dr. Luis Rankins-Ibarra, EUSD Superintendent.
