(KGTV) - The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced plans Monday to close for half a day in July to conduct employee customer service training. Operation Excellence: DMV Training will “equip employees with the tools they need to handle an unprecedented volume of REAL ID applications,” said DMV officials. Californians will be required to show a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card, or passport, to fly in the U.S. starting Oct. 1, 2020. RELATED: If you don't have a star on your license, flying will become more difficult for you in 2020“The unprecedented complexity of the REAL ID requirements is what led to the idea that we needed to take the extraordinary step of closing DMV offices for a short time to make sure all employees have consistent information in order to complete the transactions successfully,” said Government Operations Agency Secretary Marybel Batjer, who is leading the DMV Strike Team. “It is a complicated transaction and we want customers to be well prepared in order to receive their REAL ID efficiently.” Training sessions for more than 5,000 workers will take place at 183 DMV field offices, commercial drive test centers, and industry business centers statewide. “Our employees are at the heart of every transaction we perform,” said Kathleen Webb, DMV acting director. “With this commitment to training, we can ensure they have the proper tools, knowledge, and experience to provide excellent customer service to the people of California.” RELATED: California's REAL ID requirements now accepted by government“Field offices need to be prepared for at least a doubling of customer volume as the enforcement date approaches,” said DMV officials. (KGTV) - There is a hit-and-run crash every minute in the United States, according to a new report from the American Automobile Association.And in 2016, a record 2,049 people died in one of them - mainly bicyclists and pedestrians. The figure is a 60 percent increase since 2009, according to AAA."Whether you're a bicyclist or a pedestrian, and a vehicle comes out of nowhere and you're involved in an incident with it, and then for the driver to take off. It's not only frustrating, it's very sad that people will do this," said Doug Shupe, a spokesman for the AAA. The penalties for not stopping are stiff. In California, drivers who don't pull over to report property damage face up to six months in jail and a one thousand dollar fine. And it goes up from there. Shupe warned that it's hard to get away these days with so many smartphones and surveillance cameras around. A 15-year-old boy from Virginia earned a free cruise thanks to his Snapchat account handle.Darian Lipscomb of Prospect, Virginia, received a request from Carnival Cruise Lines to trade his Snapchat username (@CarnivalCruise) for a free trip, according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch.The company showed up at his home to convince him.“I answered the door, walked outside and saw my name on a big truck. I was really surprised,” he said.Lipscomb said he chose the username in 2012 (he was 9 years old at the time) to share snaps from his cruise experiences.“When I was 9 years old, I went on a cruise and got really excited and wanted to share it with my friends,” he said.Carnival sought out the name because it’s their brand name. The cruise line began an entire campaign to woo Lipscomb. They sent signs to Lipscomb's hometown to draw the teen's attention, including one on which Carnival Cruise’s new “chief fun officer” Shaquille O’Neal asked if anyone knew about Lipscomb, Fox News reported.The company showed up at Lipscomb’s home on Tuesday night and offered his family a free trip on their newest ship if he traded them his Snapchat name.He accepted the deal.
