AZUSA (CNS) - A homeless man suspected of intentionally starting the Ranch 2 Fire in Azusa surrendered to authorities Sunday, while firefighters endured another day battling the blaze amid scorching temperatures.The fire, which grew to 2,256 acres overnight, was just 7% contained Sunday.The man suspected of intentionally starting the fire, 36-year-old Osmin Palencia, was in custody at the Azusa Police Department jail. Police did not release further information except to say that the investigation was still active, and urged anyone with information about the fire's origin to call 626- 812-3200.On Saturday, police said Palencia was believed to have a connection to the Monrovia area and possibly a woman known as "Madonna Ortiz." They added he is violent and has multiple active arrest warrants.Palencia also had four misdemeanor arrests over the last two years, three by Azusa police and one by sheriff's deputies, according to jail records.Palencia's last known residence is an encampment in the Azusa Canyon Riverbed, police said.A witness who lives in a riverbed near Mountain Cove told NBC4 an argument between two homeless men sparked the fire."There were two gentlemen in the back (of a homeless encampment) fighting and they were arguing over a bike and one guy said he'd burn the other guy out, and things got escalated to where the fire started," evacuee Jimmy Pockets told the station. Authorities are racing to rescue three people trapped in a West Virginia mine.Four individuals were reported missing Saturday after an abandoned ATV they were believed to be riding was found near the entrance of a mine in Clear Creek, according to a statement from the office of West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice.One of the four emerged from the mine alive and on his own late Monday night, the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training said.The man said that the three people left trapped were alive and gave authorities details on their location, according to Justice's office.Rescue teams were unable to locate them overnight Monday. ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is suing Atlanta to block the city from enforcing its mandate to wear a mask in public and other rules related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kemp and Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, in a state court suit filed late Thursday, argued that Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has overstepped her authority and must obey Kemp’s executive orders under state law. The suit comes a day after Kemp clarified his executive orders to expressly block Atlanta and at least 14 other local governments from requiring people to wear face coverings. Authorities are using the recent arrest of a registered sex offender as a reminder for parents to monitor their children’s candy this Halloween season.Detectives with the Santa Barbara County Special Investigations Bureau and the Cannabis Compliance Team pulled over a driver Wednesday afternoon in Santa Maria, California.The driver was identified as Christian Sandez of Santa Maria. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office says inside his van they found “a large amount of packaged cannabis infused candy, processed cannabis flower, concentrated cannabis and cannabis vape products, which he possessed for the purpose of sales.”The 28-year-old, who is on active parole, does not have a California Bureau of Cannabis Control retail or sales license, according to the sheriff’s office.Sandez was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana, which is a felony, and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail where he is being held without bail for violating his parole, the sheriff’s office says.The sheriff’s office says cannabis-infused products “are intentionally packaged to resemble normal candy and can easily be mistaken” and they are encouraging parents to monitor their children’s candy, especially around Halloween.This story originally reported on KSBY.com. 1282

As the nationwide unemployment rate continues to sit in unprecedented territory, the dramatic job loss numbers also mean millions of Americans have suddenly found themselves without health insurance.Experts call it a cruel twist during the pandemic, meaning many people who get sick with COVID-19 may not get the health care help they need because they don’t have coverage.“We have massive numbers of people who are worried about their health but who no longer have coverage,” said Michelle Johnson, who oversees the nonprofit Tennessee Justice Center.Johnson says calls to her organization have increased dramatically in the last few months as Americans are finding themselves uninsured after losing their jobs due to COVID-19.“We’re just going to continue seeing people who are losing their insurance,” she said.According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly 27 million people in the United States may have lost employer-sponsored insurance. Roughly half of Americans receive health insurance through their jobs.
