SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Standing outside his Vista headquarters on Wednesday, Republican Darrell Issa told reporters that he's comfortable he'll stay ahead of opponent Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar in the run for a seat in California's 50th congressional district.“Statistically, it’s impossible for him to win with probably 60,000 votes left to come in,” he told reporters.Issa is a veteran politician looking to return to Congress after a two-year hiatus. He represented coastal North County's 49th district until 2018 but decided not to run for re-election as that district turned blue.“I've already spoken with Congressional leadership and I’m planning to go back to what will be a very unusual freshman orientation for someone with 18 years [of experience],” he added.ABC 10News spoke to Campa-Najjar on Tuesday after polls closed when early returns showed that he and Issa were still neck and neck. At the time he said, “Obviously, we know we've had a strong campaign that put people before politics and country before party and it is showing in this ruby red district. We're transcending partisanship.”The 31-year-old has continued trying to flip the historically red district which spans parts of East, North, and Riverside counties. He previously lost to former congressman Duncan Hunter who resigned this year after pleading guilty to a felony campaign fraud charge.On Wednesday, Campa-Najjar’s office declined a request for an interview but sent the following statement:“We’re still looking at the returns with a measure of hope and urge every last vote be counted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Starting in the new year, Californians will start to see paper license plates instead of dealer decals on the backs of vehicles. A new law taking effect January 1, 2019, mandates that dealers give out temporary paper plates or permanent license plates issued by the California DMV. The law is all part of an effort to aid law enforcement as well as limit toll evasion. The plates will list information including a temporary license plate number, report of sale number, vehicle identification number, make and model. There are several reasons California lawmakers passed Assembly Bill 516. Currently, law enforcement isn't able to identify some vehicles that may have been involved in a crime, according to the DMV. Having no temporary plate also makes it difficult to investigate crimes involving vehicles. Another reason for the law is toll evasion. According to the DMV, people who purchase vehicles often delay attaching permanent plates, making it impossible to identify vehicles violating toll requirements. The DMV says toll evasion costs local governments as much as million per year. 1256

I need something that gives me ultimate flexibility but also good pay," said King.Ten months ago, King signed up to drive for Roadie, a peer-to-peer shipping app that launched in San Diego about a year ago.  The Atlanta-based company matches people and businesses with stuff to send, with drivers headed their direction.On a recent morning, 10News stopped by King's home in Del Cerro and watched as he scrolled through a list of delivery jobs.  After a few seconds, he chose one.  Delta Airlines needed someone to pick up a bag from Lindbergh Field."I'm going to take it to Carlsbad for ," said King.10news rode along as he headed to the airport picked up his package from the Delta office.  It was a surfboard, one of two airport pickups he got that morning, both bound for North County.King says on a given day, he can complete about six deliveries and earn about 0.  He likes the pay and the power over his schedule."Uber is flexible, but this is the ultimate flexibility," said King."The whole idea is to tap into unused space already on the road to make delivery more efficient, more cost effective, more sustainable and faster than any other delivery method," said Jamie Gottlieb, Content Manager at Roadie.King says all that adds up to another perk: happy work days.        "I don't think I've ever delivered to a person who hasn't been happy to get their bags.  They're always happy!" said King. 1795

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District turned off drinking water at three schools Friday after test results showed elevated levels of lead.In a letter to parents, the district said lead levels above the district's 5 parts per billion (ppb) standard were discovered in fountains at Encanto and Birney Elementary schools. The fountains had also recently received new lead filters to address lead in drinking water.It's not clear how many fountains at the two schools tested above the 5 ppb limit. 516

On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. The conference expected more than 12,000 attendees at the San Diego Convention Center.The 2020 CIE Summit business technology summit at Marriott Marquis San Diego has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 "out of an abundance of caution," organizers say.Organizers with the Future of Individualized Medicine 2020, scheduled for March 12-13 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, also canceled their event "based on concern for the health of our registrants, speakers, exhibitors and staff."The American Association for Cancer Research's annual meeting set for April 24-29 has been canceled.
