Karen Mallard, a Virginia teacher who is also one of many Democrats challenging Rep. Scott Taylor for seat representing Virginia's second district, recently posted a video of her sawing an AR-15 apart. She said she did it to take a "a personal stand for gun safety," and is not backing down."We own the gun so we destroyed it and took it straight to the police department and dropped it off. I wanted there to be one less gun and to do something about gun violence," said Mallard. The video has been viewed more than a million times on her Facebook page. It's also drawing a lot of negative comments. Some people are saying destroying the rifle won't keep students safe. Some are saying what Mallard did was illegal."It is all to intimidate me and I will not be intimated. And I'm going to fight gun reform, for our children and for our community," said Mallard."Sawing off the end of a rifle barrel would probably not destroy it," said Virginia attorney Eric Lockie. "But if it shortened the barrel to under 16 inches, sawing off the end would make it immediately illegal and it`s a very bad idea.""I knew exactly what I was doing," Mallard said. "The gun was inoperable before I cut it. And we took it completely apart. And we didn't put all that on video because I wanted to get the message to the students that I was standing with them."Virginia Beach Police confirmed Thursday afternoon the gun was in their possession and waiting to be picked up by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. JULIAN, Calif. (CNS) - A 63-year-old man died after crashing his pickup into a tree at an RV park near Julian, authorities said Wednesday. The crash happened about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on KQ Ranch Road in the KQ Ranch RV resort, off state Route 79, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said. The victim was driving a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup eastbound when, for unknown reasons, he drove off the north side of the road and slammed into a tree, Garrow said.Witnesses attempted to help the driver until medics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead before he could be airlifted to a hospital, the officer said. The driver's name was withheld pending family notification.Investigators determined that alcohol and/or drugs were suspected factors in the crash and the man was not wearing a seatbelt, Garrow said. 820

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ugandan security forces are searching for a U.S. citizen and a local driver who were abducted in a wildlife park and their kidnappers demanded a ransom, authorities said Wednesday. The missing people were taken in an ambush by four gunmen on Tuesday in Queen Elizabeth National Park, a protected area near the porous border with Congo, according to Ugandan police and a government spokesman. The kidnappers held up a group of foreign tourists at gunpoint, grabbed two of them and disappeared into the bush. Later the kidnappers, using the phone of one of their victims, demanded a ransom of 0,000, said a statement issued by police."We strongly believe this ransom is the reason behind the kidnap," the statement said. "Their vehicle was left parked and the kidnappers went away with the key."Police have identified the woman as 35-year-old Kimberly Sue Endecott of Costa Mesa. The driver was identified as Jean Paul. The four other tourists were "left abandoned and unharmed" and later were taken to safety after reporting the incident to authorities, according to a separate statement from the Uganda Media Centre.A rescue party of police, military and game rangers has been sent to find the abducted people, that statement said.Kidnappings in Uganda's protected areas are rare. Queen Elizabeth National Park, in southwest Uganda, is a popular safari destination in this East African country. 1426

JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) — Visitors flocked to Julian ahead of an impending storm that could bring snow to the scenic mountain town for Thanksgiving.Wednesday, temperatures remained low but dipped as the sun went down. Rain and mist made it difficult for shoppers — clutching their coats and umbrellas — who were still making their way around Julian's main strip. Many are waiting for the snow that's expected to hit the area Thursday and Friday. Some even unprepared for the week's cold weather.RELATED:Thanksgiving storm to hit San Diego: What you need to knowSan Diego to see Thanksgiving storm with holiday travel near record highSheriff's Department offering free home checks over ThanksgivingWhere to go for the snow in San Diego"He forgot his jacket. I told him, 'where's your jacket at?'" laughed Traci Ramirez, pointing at her husband. He was able to purchase a jacket at a local shop.As more guests are sure to arrive for the snow, locals advised visitors to prepare for the powder even if it doesn't materialize."I always say bring them and not need them. They're pretty good about plowing the main roads but not the private roads. Last 'snowmaggeddon' all the staff was stuck here for a week," Kat Bowles, assistant manager at Julian Lodge, said.Gloves, jackets, long pants, and boots will make a trip to the snow much more comfortable. Also, chains will likely be required on many roads leading to the mountains. Anyone planning to head up to the mountains should pack chains for their vehicle.Sledding and fun in the snow should only be done on public lands, not on private land or on the side of roadways where traffic is a hazard. And before leaving, locals ask visitors follow the adage "take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints" and clean up after themselves. 1796

Jubilant supporters of Brazil's president-elect Jair Bolsonaro took the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday after the far-right congressman was declared the winner of the country's presidential election by a wide margin.Bolsonaro's victory caps ones of the most polarizing and violent political campaigns in Brazil's history, amid a prolonged recession, rising crime rates and widespread corruption scandals. In a victory speech Sunday, Bolsonaro said he was a "defender of freedom" who would run a government that protected citizens who "follow their duties and respect the laws.""The laws are for everyone, this is how it will be during our constitutional and democratic government," he said. 701
