MILWAUKEE — A new lawsuit claims Facebook promoted conspiracy theories among the members of militia groups and is responsible for a series of shootings in Kenosha that left protesters dead in the days following the shooting of Jacob Blake.Four people, including the partner of one of the victims killed in the shooting, filed the lawsuit Tuesday against Facebook, members of two militia groups and Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old accused of killing two protesters.The lawsuit filed in the federal court of the Eastern District of Wisconsin alleges Facebook failed to delete two groups — the Kenosha Guards and the Boogaloo Bois — before the allegedly racist and hateful content led dozens of armed counter-protesters to Kenosha, including Rittenhouse."These calls to arms, as one might infer, are not met with the responsible consideration of concerned citizens, but by violent, racist rhetoric in which militia members promise to shoot protesters, their desire to literally kill people displayed publicly for all to see," the lawsuit alleges.The lawsuit argues that Facebook's algorithm allows content from such militia groups to spread rapidly. The suit also argues the algorithm allowed Kenosha Guards' content to be picked up by conspiracy website InfoWars, which wrote an article on the group's call to arms.The lawsuit adds Rittenhouse answered that call to arms and drove across state lines from Illinois to Kenosha with a long gun. Under the command of militia member Ryan Balch — who is named as a defendant in the suit — Rittenhouse later independently shot the three protesters, according to the lawsuit.Rittenhouse is also listed as a defendant in the lawsuit.Facebook received over 400 complaints and flags concerning the Kenosha Guards page and the content it was posting, according to the lawsuit. It alleges that the social network did not attempt to take the page down until after the shooting occurred. In fact, Kevin Mathewson, the creator of the Kenosha Guards page, removed the group himself, the suit alleges.Mathewson is also among those listed as a defendant in the lawsuit."More importantly, Facebook continues to provide militias with the tools to further their violent conspiracies, at a time when we are entering into an election period in which the President of the United States — who openly supports the activities of these militias, while insulting Black Lives Matter and other racial justice protesters — has declared his intent to contest the forthcoming election," the lawsuit reads.The lawsuit cites several causes of action, including conspiracy to interfere with civil rights, action for neglect to prevent, negligence, civil conspiracy, intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, among other causes.The lawsuit calls for the injunctive relief enjoining Defendants from future violations of plaintiffs' rights guaranteed under federal and state law, as well as damages determined during a trial.The plaintiffs in the lawsuit include:Hannah Gittings, partner of Anthony Huber, who was fatally shot by RittenhouseChristopher McNeal, a Black man who says he was assaulted by militia membersCarmen Palmer, a Black woman who says she was attacked by militia members when she traveled to Kenosha to protestNathan Peet, a local journalist who witnessed Rittenhouse allegedly shoot the first victimThe lawsuit was filed on behalf of the Plaintiffs by Jason Flores-Williams and Jennifer D. More than a year after he died in police custody with cameras from the reality show "Live PD" on the scene, body camera footage and police records show that a Texas man told police multiple times that he couldn't breathe and was suffering from a heart condition as police took him into custody.According to KVUE-TV in Austin, Texas and the Austin American-Statesman, 40-year-old Javier Ambler died in police custody on March 28, 2019. Ambler had led police and Live PD camera operators on a 22-minute car chase that began when he allegedly failed to dim his headlights to oncoming traffic.Body camera footage from Ambler's arrest shows that police used stun guns three times while taking him into custody, even after he told police he was suffering from congestive heart failure.According to KVUE, an autopsy listed Ambler's death a homicide, which was later determined to be a "justifiable homicide." Medical examiners said Ambler's heart condition and his weight "in combination with forcible restraint" led to his death. Examiners also said Ambler was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of his death.KVUE reports that the most serious charge Ambler would have faced was evading arrest, a low-level felony.The District Attorney's Office in Travis County told KVUE that they have been investigating Ambler's death but says they've been hindered by a lack of cooperation from the Williamson County Sheriff's Office. Officials also say that Live PD has failed to share their footage from the arrest with investigators.Travis County District Attorney Margaret Moore told KVUE that she feels that Live PD's participation with the Williamson County Sheriff's Office led to Ambler's death.“It is of very serious concern to any of us who are in law enforcement that the decision to engage in that chase was driven by more of a need to provide entertainment than to keep Williamson County citizens safe,” she said.Moore told KVUE that she plans to take the case before a Grand Jury later this year. 2017

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – At the beginning of this year, the Tier 1 gaming lounge was taking off. “Business was pretty good,” said Jordan Tian, who was part of the team launching the gaming lounge in Milwaukee. “We had like a decent amount of people signing up, but then we had to close completely.”The video gamer’s dream hangout was forced to close because of the pandemic. “We got government grants, like a decent amount for a very small business, but we didn't want to just sit there and pay expenses and wait until we could reopen,” said Tian of his talented team.So, Tian used his free time to fix up the website for his family’s Chinese restaurant by making a new online system, so customers could directly visit their website to place orders and see the menu.It cut out third party ordering platforms and helped keep his mom’s restaurant alive.“She saved like thousands of dollars every month on online ordering fees and she's like, ‘This is really good. You could probably do this for other businesses.’” That is exactly what Tian did next.Tian and his team built a platform called SmallNeighborhood. It’s a site where you can order directly from local businesses. Then, Jordan decided to design the websites and ordering platforms for those small businesses for free.It's a service restaurant owner Adnan Bin-Mahfouz desperately needed.“Having less people dine in took away close to 75% of our business,” said Bin-Mahfouz.Bin-Mahfouz’s restaurant, O Yeah Chicken and More, was barely scraping by because of COVID-19. He was hoping online orders would flood in with families quarantining at home, but then realized his website was tough to use.“Most of us are operators, we’re chefs who’re really not high tech,” said Bin-Mahfouz.So, Tian revamped the website and Adnan saw sales starting to grow. “This app I see is a long-term solution. It's a partnership. You do feel with them, you are part of a group or part of family,” said Bin-Mahfouz.For every order Adnan gets, Jordan collects a fee up to 99￠ per order, a smaller fee than any other delivery app.“Right now, online ordering platforms, they take so much money that it's hard,” said Tian. “They can lose money on each order, even after the overhead costs and coupons and everything.”It’s making sure both these small businesses can stay open in a year where family owned stores are dwindling.“The small businesses, we are the main spine of the economy,” said Bin-Mahfouz. “These small, poppa mom shops, whether it's a gas station, a restaurant, a laundromat, whatever it is, you know, we are the people.”“In building up small businesses, that's what makes our cities different,” said Tian. “Because if there's only chains and national chains, then everything in town loses its flavor.”Saving the flavor each small restaurant adds to its neighborhood is a mission that means everything to Bin-Mahfouz.“As an immigrant, who moved here 30 years ago to a different country who didn't even speak the language. Now, to have somebody like Jordan, who his parents were immigrants too, so he can feel what are we going through and trying to connect all of us together to serve and give the best service to the end user, definitely is something great,” said Bin-Mahfouz.That togetherness is a beacon of hope when many are feeling alone.“Let’s help each other. Let's build something together, one community at a time, one neighborhood at a time. I need my customers back.
