Richie Flores is a lead blind ambassador for the Blind Café. He guides an experience where people sit and eat in complete pitch-black darkness. "I really like the vulnerability that people show in the dark, and the community that it brings together," says Casey Papp with the Blind Cafe. "We create a safe container for people to feel uncomfortable.""Sometimes out in the visual world, we come in with judgments and choose not to talk," Flores says. "And when you're in the dark, and you're having to use your words, you have to talk and have to communicate."With hands on each other's shoulders, the students walk in."The moment you walk in, it's like a whole different world," one student says, while in complete darkness."I get really claustrophobic, so I'm feeling that," another student says.For 15 minutes, the students touch and taste different foods in front of them. Some say they can’t tell the difference between a cherry tomato and a grape. Others say their eyes want to focus on something, but they never do. After some time and reflection, the lesson suddenly becomes clear."Most people they walk out of the dark with something that they didn't have going in, or a different perspective, or some piece of themselves that they didn't realize they weren't in touch with," Papp says.Eventually, they're back into what's familiar as they walk out of the room."When you're in darkness, you experience a whole new sense of who you are, and what you can become. I just really let it flow, and let my emotions run through," one student says of the experience."That's what we're doing for college. Just kind of going into it blindly, not knowing what's going to happen or what to expect, but just knowing that it will hopefully make us a better person after and make us stronger," another student says.Flores says the experience isn't a simulation on blindness or an empathy program."It's all about creating community through empowering communication, the enjoyment and what that brings to your soul, and also what music brings to your soul," Flores says.Sometimes all it takes is a new outlook on life to change your mindset and move forward with positivity."Be proud of who you are, your culture, your language, your identities... and just keep going," Flores says. 3147

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — An Arizona woman is facing first degree murder charges after she admitted to murdering her mother Monday afternoon.According to Sgt. Ben Hoster, dispatchers received a call around 2 p.m. from someone at an apartment complex near 64th Street and Osborn Road saying their neighbor asked them to call 911.Scottsdale police say Holly Brennan, 46, later told the dispatcher that she had killed her mother, Sharon Simmons. Officers responded and found Simmons deceased in a bed.Brennan told police she suffocated her mother. Investigators did not immediately know when Simmons had died.Mike Bennett said he saw Brennan confess to police outside her apartment. "She admitted that she smothered her mother with a pillow," said Bennett. "Responding officers then went inside the apartment and located an elderly female deceased on the bed," said Sgt. Hoster. "Then they put the cuffs on her and sat her down on the sidewalk," said Bennett. "I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Severe weather plagued several states throughout the Midwest over the weekend, killing one person and damaging at least one building.Vickie Darnel, 64, died from drowning Sunday after she drove into a flooded creek crossing in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, according to Lt. Kera Philippi, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.Philippi says that Darnel's vehicle was swept off the roadway around 4:30 a.m. Sunday near the border of Arkansas.The area saw a number of flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings from the National Weather Service over the weekend.The National Weather Service is sending an assessment team to South Bend, Indiana, after a tornado touched down in the area and destroyed at least one building.The building was the site of Growing Kids daycare facility, according to Aaron Miller, dispatch supervisor for St. Joseph County Public Safety Communication Center.Miller told CNN that the building suffered extensive damage and there were several reports of trees down throughout St. Joseph County.Missouri State Highway Patrol along with the Missouri Department of Conservation and several local agencies performed multiple water rescues Sunday for people whose vehicles were in the water.They also rescued people who were stranded by high water due to heavy rainfall, according to the Missouri Department of Public Safety.A subdivision in Neosho, Missouri, and parts of Roaring River State Park had to be evacuated, although it was unclear how many people had to leave, the Missouri Department of Public Safety said.The band of weather that caused all of this chaos is called a frontal boundary and it acts as a cold front but doesn't actually have any cold air behind it.The mixture of the boundary layer is slightly cooler dry air and hot humid air which can cause intense storms. 1821
