Stephen Hawking, the brilliant British theoretical physicist who overcame a debilitating disease to publish wildly popular books probing the mysteries of the universe, has died, according to a family spokesman. TAMPA, Fla. -- As parents across the country grow more concerned every morning when they send their kids to school, more and more are turning to bulletproof backpacks.“After Sandy Hook, people couldn’t wrap their minds around a bulletproof backpack but now they think it’s something that they need," said Yasir Sheikh, the president of Guard Dog Security.The Sandy Hook shooting inspired Sheikh to create a backpack out of bulletproof materials. It doesn’t seem like much. The backpack has just a thin layer of kevlar, but it is certified to withstand handgun rounds.“Ideally, we think with the way things are going this should become mandatory, common for all students," said Skeikh. "It’s a sad reality, it’s become a new normal."Others feel the same. Just three days after the deadly school shooting in South Florida his company saw a 150 percent increase in the number of bags they shipped.But do they actually work?Ryan Hart is a certified firearm instructor for defense training company Ground Ready International Training, or G.R.I.T Ready. He also teaches active shooter survival courses.Hart put a barrel with sand behind the backpack to simulate a body and took aim with his Glock 19.“The rounds definitely penetrated the front of the bag here," said Hart inspecting the shot-up bag, "But if we flip it over there’s no penetration past the armor itself."Next up: the AR-15.In the last decade, this style of gun has been used in six of the 10 deadliest mass shootings throughout the country, including the Parkland school shooting.“It went right through the soft armor," Hart said after spraying the backpack with bullets from the AR-15.It's what Hart expected, as the Guard Dog Security backpack is not certified to withstand assault-style weapons. To stop bullets from a similar weapon, the backpack would need to be equipped with steel plates like those installed in military vests. However, that would make the backpack fairly heavy to carry.“I would recommend (the backpack), yes," Hart said. "While it did not stop a direct shot from an assault rifle it can still stop bullet fragments, ricochets, glass flying through the air.”Then we posed this question to Skeikh: "What do you think it says about our society that we are resorting to items like this?"The backpacks cost between 0-200. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Tallahassee Police Department announced Tuesday the outcome of a "large-scale" human trafficking investigation that resulted in 178 people being arrested.The department recently concluded a two-year-long operation, called "Operation Stolen Innocence," involving human trafficking and child sex trafficking right within the Capital City community.TPD Chief Revell said that it started with an investigation after a 13-year-old child’s image was seen on a prostitution website. Investigators with TPD’s Special Victims Unit set up an operation to rescue the child to ensure her safety. Tara Batista spent a week in the hospital after visiting one of her favorite spas for a pedicure. Now she's tethered to a picc line for six weeks and under the daily care of a home health nurse.Batista, who sings at Puerto Rican festivals, says the ordeal has turned her life upside down emotionally, physically and economically.Tampa-based WFTS asked if there was anything different about this pedicure and Batista said she told the woman working on her feet to ease up a bit because it felt like the instruments were digging too far into her skin.Batista says she began to feel weak hours after leaving Nail Image in Tampa. By the next day she experienced extreme fatigue and pains began shooting up her leg.A day and a half later family members drove Batista to the emergency room when part of her foot turned black and she could not stand on her left leg. Doctors diagnosed her with a severe infection. Batista underwent surgery and remained in the hospital for a week. WFTS obtained her medical records which cite a deep injury triggered by a bacterial infection on her left big toe.WFTS took the hospital report to Nail Image along with the receipt from her pedicure. The owner refused to comment. There is no conclusive proof that the pedicure caused the infection.Lee Timberlake instructs students at the Artistic Nails and Beauty academy in Tampa. She spends 155 hours of a 240 hour curriculum teaching sanitizing and disinfecting procedures.Timberlake who has taught nail technicians for 10 years says instruments should be scrubbed then placed into a disinfectant between every customer. SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. -- Dozens of people tested positive for the coronavirus and hundreds were quarantined after an outbreak in Suffolk County, New York, linked to a sweet 16 party, County Executive Steve Bellone said Tuesday.The party took place at the Miller Place Inn on Sept. 25, with a guest list of 81 people.The Miller Place Inn was fined ,000 for violating state executive orders and health laws, and ,000 for violating county rules.Several positive COVID-19 cases in the Sachem School District were reported to the county on Sept. 30, and during the course of their investigation, the county discovered that the cases were connected to the sweet 16 party.Following a contact tracing investigation, the county identified 37 positive cases connected to the party; 270 people were told to quarantine.It's the first time a businesses was fined by the Suffolk County Health Department over COVID-19-related violations.Bellone said that for the county, this qualifies as a super spreader event.“This was an egregious violation and should serve as a stark reminder of the consequences that exist for flouting COVID-19 protocols,” said Bellone. “These rules and regulations exist for a reason - to keep New Yorkers safe - and we all have an obligation to act responsibly.”This story was originally published by Corey Crockett at WPIX. 1348
