SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in nearly 100 years, an integrated company of male and female recruits at MCRD San Diego are about to begin their journey into becoming Marines. These future Marines will be led by graduates from MCRD's first ever integrated Drill Instructor Course. Now the mission of the course is to screen, train, and further develp leadership and command presence of selected Marines, in order to successfully perform duties of a drill instructor."We are taking them from the leadership skills, that they had in the fleet, and further refining them here," says Major Lynn Stow, Director of the MCRD San Diego Drill Instructor Course. "The drill instructor's goal is to successfully transfer recruits into United States Marines."Fifty-seven Marines are scheduled to graduate from the grueling 57 day course, and for the very first time, the graduating class will include 3 females."Getting the opportunity to come here was almost like divine intervention, everything just kind of fell into place," says student Sargent Stephanie Fahl. "To come here and make it this far, I'm really proud of myself."These future drill instructors at MCRD are looking forward to changing the lives of young 17 and 18-year-old recruits. "The change I'd like to instill in the recruits is to obviously maintain that discipline that's a staple of recruit training,"says student Sargent Stephanie Jordi. "I'd also like to inspire them and teach them how to become leaders even from that lowest level." Student Sargent Ikea Kaufman feels being a drill instructor is about teaching recruits how to be men and women."There is more to life than social media and all that. There is actually responsibility."And while Drill Instructor Course is very rigorous, the payback is immense. "You have contributed to the mission of making Marines. You have been able to take these recruits from day one and transform them into Marines. They are going to look up to you as their role model." 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dramatic video shows what happened after a liquor store owner caught thieves taking off with a pricey bottle in University City.The theft that spurred Haithem Ballo into action unfolded on in afternoon in September. Surveillance video shows two women entering Courtesy Liquor and Deli. Ballo says the two women asked about his day and browsed the store. They asked about prices, pulling out inexpensive options and put them back on the shelf.A few minutes later, one of the two grabs a 0 bottle of Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky. At the checkout, one of women is seen walking out. The other woman waits. I know they are thieves," said Ballo.Ballo is heard shouting as he takes off after them, with one thought in his mind."I feel like they robbed me, and I have to get it from them," said Ballo.RELATED: Plant thief targets Poway business, other thefts nearbySurveillance video shows Ballo yanking the driver door open and jumping onto the truck. He grabs at the bottle, in the hands of a woman in the back. With the truck on the move, he's struck in the head with the bottle. A man in the passenger seat punches him in the face, before Ballo finally jump off, allowing the truck to speed off."We work hard for this money, got a big family. It's not easy to let people steal from you," said Ballo.Ballo says the three he saw are part of a ring of at least eight thieves that have stolen pricey liquor from the Vons store next door, repeatedly for the past six months. He says the same two women were recorded stealing from Vons this weekend. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Environmental groups are increasing pressure on members of Congress to support the Green New Deal.On Friday, about two dozen demonstrators rallied outside Democratic Congressman Scott Peters' office in the UTC area to get him to sign on. "We're intent on pushing forward with what seems to be the strongest commitment to making important action on climate change by our government," said Karl Aldinger, a Fallbrook resident and member of the a group called Sunrise Movement.Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced the deal in February. It lays out a series of goals, including getting the U.S. to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. It also touches on issues surrounding education and wages. Peters, who represents the 52nd District, is the only San Diego County democrat not to sign onto the deal. He said he prefers a more direct approach through specific actions that can get bipartisan approval. Peters pointed to a series of bills that just passed out of committee."We don't want to scare away people from solutions," Peters said. "This is a problem we only have 10 or 12 years to solve. It can't be done just by Democrats, it can't be done just by liberals. It has to be done by everybody."Political analyst John Dadian says more moederate approaches could play a hand in the 2020 election."This dovetails into why we're seeing, in the last 10 years, what's increased every cycle, the rise of the independent, because the independents are saying I don't want to be Republican or Democrat, I don't always agree, I want to make my own decisions," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Democrats have secured control of two of the most powerful agencies in our region - the city and the county.San Diego will soon have a democratic mayor and an 8 to 1 advantage on the City Council. Couple that with Democrats flipping the County Board of Supervisors after years of Republican control, and it appears a whole new philosophy is on the way."I've been waiting 20 years,” said Nicole Capretz, who heads the Climate Action Campaign. “This is, I mean, decades in the making.”Climate Action Campaign has fought the Republican-controlled Board of Supervisors for years over how it handles the environment, prevailing in court over the county's climate plan.“They've twice had to rescind their climate plan publicly, which is unprecedented,” Capretz said.Capretz said she expects things to change in January, when the board will flip to a 3-2 Democrat advantage. That is expected to shift how the county addresses key issues like the environment, public health, and housing - in other words, no more sprawling back country developments that many times wind up challenged in a public vote.“We have wasted so much energy and so much time debating things that were not legally valid and should not have been done,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Meanwhile, over at City hall, the Democrats will expand their veto proof advantage on the city council from 6-3 to 8-1.
