(CNS) - Police identified a 43-year-old man armed with a machete who allegedly stabbed a police dog and broke a patrol vehicle's window in Oceanside.About 5 p.m. Tuesday, an officer was inside a vehicle, stopped at a traffic light on College Boulevard and Plaza Drive, when he saw the suspect, Noomane Trabelsi, across the street yelling at him, according to Oceanside Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Bussey.The suspect allegedly approached the vehicle swinging a machete and broke the driver's side window, Bussey said.The officer suffered minor injuries and called for assistance. A perimeter was established, and the suspect was seen near the Mossy Nissan dealership, at 3535 College Blvd., and officers tried to make contact with him, according to Bussey.Trabelsi went into a nearby ravine, prompting officers to deploy a police dog, according to Bussey.Trabelsi allegedly stabbed the dog, named Chico, in his head and then stabbed himself multiple times in his stomach, Bussey said. Chico was taken to a veterinarian and is expected to recover, according to Bussey.Officers, assisted by a San Diego County Sheriff's Department helicopter, searched for Trabelsi for two hours in tough terrain, according to Bussey.Trabelsi was located, arrested and taken to Scripps La Jolla to be treated for the self-inflicted injuries, Bussey said. 1381

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — A vehicle slammed into a power pole in Oceanside and flipped over early Monday, leaving locals without power and forcing some evacuations.The driver careened into the power pole in the 220 block of N. El Camino Real at about 3:30 a.m. The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.The power pole remained upright but was leaning over a nearby mobile home park, threatening some homes. Those homes have been evacuated and power to most of the park has been shut off.SDG&E crews were out to assess the damage Monday. The outage affected at least 180 people. Crews expect to restore power by 4 p.m.It's not clear what caused the driver to lose control. The driver reportedly told Oceanside Police they were trying to avoid hitting a coyote. 785

OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Officials at the nation's tallest dam unleashed water down a rebuilt spillway Tuesday for the first time since it crumbled two years ago and drove hundreds of thousands of California residents from their homes over fears of catastrophic flooding.Water flowed down the spillway and into the Feather River as storms this week and melting snowpack are expected to swell the lake behind Oroville Dam in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, said Molly White, principal engineer with the California Department of Water Resources.The spring storms follow a very wet winter that coated the mountains with thick snowpack, which state experts will coincidentally measure Tuesday to determine the outlook for California's water supplies. Heavy winter rain and snow has left the state drought-free for the first time since December 2011, experts say.The dam's main spillway "was designed and constructed using 21st century engineering practices and under the oversight and guidance from state and federal regulators and independent experts," Joel Ledesma, deputy director of the department's State Water Project, said in a statement."We spent the last two years restoring full functionality of the spillway. We expect it to run as designed," Ledesma said during a news conference.The original spillway on the 770-foot-high (235-meter) dam, which is 150 miles (241 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco, was built in the 1960s.In early 2017, storms drenched the state and the massive spillway broke apart as it carried heavy flows.Dam operators reduced the flow and allowed water to run down an emergency spillway — essentially a low area on the reservoir's rim — but the flow began eroding the earthen embankment that had never been used. Authorities suddenly had to order an evacuation of nearly 200,000 people living in communities downstream.The threat of a dam collapse that would unleash a torrent of water did not happen, however, and people were allowed to go home days later.In January 2018, an independent panel of dam safety experts released a nearly 600-page report that blamed the crisis on "long-term and systemic failures" by California dam managers and regulators to recognize inherent construction and design flaws in the dam.Repairs have cost .1 billion. California requested about 9 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the fixes, but the federal government has rejected 6 million of those reimbursements. The petition suggests Disney should re-theme the ride around "Princess and the Frog." Tiana, the main character in the film, is recognized for being Disney's first African-American princess.The petition had more than 8,000 signatures as of Thursday morning. The petition's current goal is set at 10,000 signatures.The call for change comes as the country continues to hold discussions surrounding racial injustice in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis police custody.Floyd's death caught the nation's attention after bystander video showed the 46-year-old man struggling to breathe while in police custody in late May. The video showed a white police officer, later identified as Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes.Chauvin was initially charged with third-degree murder before charges were upgraded to second-degree murder. He's also charged with manslaughter.The three other officers involved in Floyd's arrest — Tou Thao, J.
