PHOENIX, Arizona — "I would go out by myself, I would hang out with whoever wanted to hang out but my real relationships were all failing," said Stephani Krise.That's because Krise says the only relationship she cared about was the one she had with alcohol.Constant partying after work, binge drinking, stints in the hospital and traditional rehab seemed hopeless."After I relapsed and I couldn't stay sober, I kind of had given up hope," said Krise.Another woman, Sarah Kennedy, says her long addiction to alcohol had affected friendships, her career and of course, her health.And like Krise, Kennedy was willing to try just about anything."Read about it on the web and just seemed too good to be true," said Kennedy.What she read about is the Sinclair method.Her first appointment she met with a doctor, got a prescription, took a pill, and later that day, had a drink, doctors’ orders of course.If the protocol seems like a radical idea, that's because it is."I mean I think it's time to change the way addiction treatment’s been for a long time," said Dr. Michael Yasinski.Dr. Yasinski is spear heading that effort at his Scottsdale office."It's founded in science and data which is why I liked it," said Dr. Yasinski.Every one of his patients gets to continue drinking as long as they take the anti-addiction drug Naltrexone one hour before they knock one back. The pill works to block pleasure sensors in the brain. He says combined with psycho-therapy the cravings go away."It's not seeing or enjoying alcohol like it normally does, so it starts to lose interest over time," said Dr. Yasinski."I came back two weeks later and he said 'how did you do,' and I said well I felt great cause I didn't have to change a thing," said Kennedy.But what did change, was the desire to drink. Both report drinking isn't a problem anymore. This coming as nearly 70 percent of traditional rehab patients relapse within the first year."To me, it’s like there is no relapse, you just keep going and keep improving," said Kennedy."I just feel so much better about myself and that's what makes the difference," said Krise.A true testament to what taking a chance can lead to.So why are we just hearing about this now? Traditionally alcoholism has been treated as a moral issue rather than a medical one.According to those in the treatment industry, most doctors just aren’t trained in this type of treatment. PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida — A heroic act caught on video.A baby nearly choked to death at a Florida mall but quick-thinking officers who just happened to be nearby stepped up to save her life. The incident unfolded nearly two weeks ago. One-year old Lucia Graham was rescued by two Palm Beach Gardens, Florida officers who happened to be eating lunch nearby when she started choking."They were there for a reason and that reason was to save her life," said Ana Jaramillo de Graham, Lucia's mother.In the surveillance video, Jaramillo de Graham can be seen with her two kids, including Lucia's toddler brother, enjoying Kid's Day at Palm Beach Gardens Mall."We got hungry, and like we always do, we went to Chick-fil-A," she said.Lucia then started choking on a chicken nugget."She looked at me with her eyes wide open. She tried to do something with her mouth — she couldn't cough, couldn't do anything," said Jaramillo de Graham.The mother tried a technique taught to her by her pediatrician, which involved sharp blows to the baby's back to dislodge the object. She said in a panic she must not have been performing the technique hard enough, so she started screaming for help.Officer Robert Ayala and Officer Rafael Guadelupe rushed over right away."Officer Ayala stepped in, I handed her to him. He sat down and so quickly started performing what he needed to do to make sure she was OK. And I sat on the floor panicked. I just wanted to make sure she was OK," she said.Finally, the chicken was removed and Lucia was able to breathe again."They're our heroes. They are the best, best angels we could've had that day at the mall," Jaramillo de Graham said.Lucia was immediately checked by EMT staff at the mall. Despite the close call, baby Lucia is 100 percent healthy."They knew exactly what to do to save her life," Lucia's mother said. "So, thank you so much officers because if it wasn't for you guys, we probably, definitely wouldn't be here with our Lucia."Jaramillo de Graham recommends all parents take classes so they can properly administer CPR or life saving techniques to children if they are choking.On Thursday night, those officers were honored by city council and Lucia's parents. 2260

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Pittsburgh announced on Sunday that they'd issued a shelter-in-place order for students on its Pittsburgh campus due to a spike in positive COVID-19 cases on campus.The order, which was initially scheduled for Thursday, was moved up and went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday."This action is being taken to respond to a significant increase in positive cases among students over the weekend," university officials said in a statement. PALA INDIAN RESERVATION, Calif. (KGTV) --A woman was arrested after reportedly attacking three elderly victims with a baseball bat on the Pala Indian Reservation on Saturday.According to The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the three victims were visiting from Los Angeles and broke down on the side of Pala Mission Road after visiting the nearby casino.Deputies say all three victims are Cambodian and do not speak English. While on the side of the road the suspect, identified as Michelle Cagey Limon, 32, approached their vehicle and began striking it with a bat.When the two men inside the car got out, Limon hit one of them with the bat and punched the other in the face. The men ran away, leaving a female victim to take shelter inside the car.Deputies say the suspect then smashed out all the windows before also fleeing the scene. All three victims were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.Limon is being charged with three counts of elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism. During her arrest, deputies found a small drug lab inside the home, resulting in the arrest of Matthew Geyer, 37, on drug charges. 1164
