SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The son of artists, Steve Maloney says creating art has always been in his DNA."It makes you feel good, making art makes me feel good, really," said Maloney. The project he is most proud of is featured in the documentary Take Me Home Huey, which is being screened during San Diego's GI Film Festival. Produced by Los Angeles filmmakers Alicia H. Brauns and Christine N. Steele, the film documents Maloney's transformation of a Vietnam-era Medevac Huey Helicopter from a wounded warbird, shot down in combat in 1969, into a colorful sculpture with a mission to help veterans recover from Post-Traumatic Stress."What my purpose was to honor those 2.7 million or more American Vietnam veterans that never got a welcome home," said Maloney. Inspiration for the Huey sculpture came from Vietnam veterans themselves. Maloney interviewed several, listening to their stories, and learning what they felt while during the war. "What are you thinking about? Well, number one, probably your girlfriend, maybe your car, mom's apple pie."Maloney and the filmmakers were able to uncover the history of Huey 174, learning the names of surviving crew and two young soldiers killed during the shoot-down.The three survivors were reunited 50 years after their aircraft was shot down. "They almost wanted to hug it, for sure, they wanted to touch the cross, the medevac cross on the top. It just brought out their experiences, which they talked about," said Maloney. "The two pilots had a great feeling of guilt."Maloney says the project has helped Vietnam veterans cope with the traumas of war. Maloney is currently working on a book which will allow him to share more experiences not captured in the film, including the journey of Huey #174 as an art exhibition in various cities throughout the United States and the people he met along the way.The Huey sculpture is on display at the Palm Springs Air Museum. 1919
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Registrar of Voters is revising down its expected turnout numbers for the March primary from earlier projections. With an estimated 290,000 ballots still outstanding as of Thursday evening, turnout is now expected to fall between 47 and 52 percent of the county's registered voters. This means turnout will look similar to 2016's primary, which had about 50 percent participation. Original projections in January from the Registrar of Voters showed expectations of turnout between 55 and 60 percent. That number was revised in February to between 50 and 55 percent."It looks like turnout in this primary is about what it was in 2016 in San Diego," said professor Thad Kousser, department chair of the UC San Diego political science department. "We didn't see the spike we were expecting."However, Kousser points out that using turnout percentage can be misleading. Because of California's new Motor Voter law, there are more than 300,000 more registered voters in San Diego County than there were in 2016. Therefore, a matching 50 percent turnout would actually mean tens of thousands of new voters cast ballots in the 2020 primary. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council unanimously approved David Nisleit as the next chief of the San Diego Police Department.A search committee interviewed candidates and took public comment on the hiring before announcing Nisleit as the top candidate February 1."SDPD is poised to enter a new era of excellence," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer at the news conference. Faulconer will conduct Nisleit's swearing-in ceremony Tuesday morning.“Dave Nisleit is a San Diegan who cares deeply about making our city better and keeping our neighborhoods safe,” the Mayor said in a statement Monday. “He is someone who holds himself and his officers to the highest ethical and professional standards. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There's a stretch of Linda Rosa Avenue in Bird Rock that winds up a hillside and leads to homes with sweeping views of San Diego's coastline.The homes that enjoy that view, however, vary quite a bit. Some are older, smaller, and were built in the 1960s.Others are modern, and tower above the rest. Some refer to those larger homes as "McMansions," and wonder how they keep getting approved without any pushback from neighbors to protect community character."They basically skirt the reviews," said Dave Ish, who lives in an older home on Linda Rosa.READ?JON HORN'S ORIGINAL LOOK AT 'MCMANSIONS'Developers are able to skip the lengthy and public Coastal Development Permit process as long as they retain at least 50 percent of a structure's exterior walls. It's spelled out in city code. That's why McMansions are popping up in San Diego's coastal neighborhoods. But it turns out the city's 50-percent exemption creates even more flexibility for developers because they can get permit after permit with no waiting period in between.RELATED: Coronado neighbors worried about historic mansion turned transitional homeDeveloper Ben Ryan, of Tourmaline Properties, did that for an ocean-view home on Linda Rosa.In October, the city issued him a permit to add a closet and convert a garage to a carport, under the 50-percent exemption. "Obviously it was just a temporary deal," Ish said. "Nothing was finished, it was this bowed out paneling, these windows weren't finished. It may have been a quick job, but it changed the layout of the home enough to allow Ryan to alter the design for a larger project.Ryan got a new permit later in February - again under the 50-percent exemption - calling for a second story, master suite, decks, kitchen, living room, dining room, and more. Today, the home is just half a wood frame - the closet and carport nowhere in site. Friday, March 1, the university will host a special birthday party for the author, which coincides with National Read Across America Day. The celebration will include cake, carnival games, a read-a-thon, giant inflatable Suess characters and, of course, a selfie station.The event will also include a reading from “Happy Birthday to You!” in honor of the classic book's 60th anniversary.
