(KGTV) — U.S. Navy veteran Michael White has been freed by Iran and left the country on Swiss government aircraft.White was jailed in Iran in 2018 while visiting a woman he had met online and fallen in love with, the Associated Press reported. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of insulting Iran's supreme leader and posting private information online.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement, reading in part that White would be reunited with his family."He is now on his way back to the United States, where we look forward to reuniting him with his family. I commend U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook for negotiating Mr. White’s release with the Iranians. I thank the Swiss government and the work of our diplomats for facilitating this successful diplomacy," Pompeo wrote.RELATED:Mother of San Diego Navy veteran held in Iran says he lost appealNavy veteran from Imperial Beach being held in IranWife of Imperial Beach man arrested in Iran recalls suspicious behaviorThe Associated Press reported that White's release was part of a deal to free an American-Iranian physician, Matteo Taerri, from behind bars. According to family spokesperson Jonathan Franks, White went to Iran to see a woman described as his girlfriend and he had booked a July 27, 2019, flight back home to San Diego on United Arab Emirates.White's mom filed a missing person report with the State Department after he didn't board the flight.White worked as a cook in the U.S. Navy and left the service about a decade ago. His mother said last year she was worried about her son's health in prison because he had been undergoing treatment for a neck tumor and has asthma.Frank said White had traveled to Iran legally with a visa. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1895

(KSTU) -- A woman who disappeared in Utah's Zion National Park before being found 12 days later is reportedly being investigated for fraud in connection to her disappearance. The Salt Lake Tribune reported the Washington County Sheriff's Office is looking into Holly Courtier's story after accounts of her rescue and how she survived with no food or water raised questions within the department. In the days following the rescue, Courtier's daughter -- who lives in San Diego -- said her mother hit her head and became disoriented in the park; while her sister, Jaime Strong, said Holly never drank from a nearby river because it was possibly toxic.Hearing the accounts after Courtier was able to leave Zion National Park with minimal assistance raised red flags to officials, according to a statement released by the Sheriff's Office."These inconsistencies raised some questions as to the authenticity of the events as reported to law enforcement," said Sheriff Cory C. Pulsipher in the statement. The Washington County Sheriff's Office says it has received "numerous tips" claiming Courtier made up the story as a way to make money through a GoFundMe account -- a theory that does not check out with the sheriff."At this point in the investigation, there has been no evidence to support the theory that the incident was committed intentionally as an effort to achieve financial gain."RELATED COVERAGE:-- San Diego woman’s mother missing in Zion National Park-- Hiker who disappeared in Zion National Park found-- Hiker's rescue leaves unanswered questions 1562

(KGTV) -- While COVID-19 has taken the lives of thousands across the country, one couple has come up with a way for their memories to live on. Rebecca Heiss and Dermot Jevens, from South Carolina, came up with the idea to create a site to honor those who lost their battles to the virus. “This is going to be an entire community built memorial,” says Jevens.“It was frustrating and sad and scary, and realizing that these were people,” says Heiss. “They weren’t just numbers.”“Mourning America” launched in late March. So far, there are 4,500 names posted. The couple has received nearly 100 submissions from families all over the U.S., with the picture and story of their loved one. The couple says some families haven’t been able to give their loved ones a proper memorial. “This lady’s mom passed away in a nursing home. She wasn’t able to be there with her,” says Jevens. “She wasn’t able to go to the funeral. You can feel that pain and almost that release as she was writing and sending in the story.”The couple has not received any submissions from San Diego yet, but they say their mission is to honor each person who has passed from the virus. If you have a loved one or friend who lost their battle with the virus, the couple encourages you to submit their story and photo to the “Mourning America” site. 1323
