SAN DIEGO - A landlord in the College Area near San Diego State says the homeless problem is getting worse, and it's keeping people from renting in the neighborhood.Suhail Khalifeh owns six homes near El Cajon Boulevard and Montezuma Road. He says one of them has sat empty for six months because renters are worried about the sight of homeless people in the area."When people come and see the scenes of homeless all around and smell the urine in the atmosphere, they leave and never come back," says Khalifeh.Khalifeh says he finds trash, drugs and feces in the bushes near his properties.The neighborhood has dealt with the problem for months. Last July, neighbors complained that a nearby vacant lot was becoming a camping ground for homeless people. She has to give them rides to the library next door," he says. He also has video of people meeting in the middle of the night for what he thinks are drug deals.A search of the website crimemapping.com shows 46 criminal reports filed in the area within the last month.Khalifeh says the police do an excellent job at responding, but they can only offer short-term solutions. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury Thursday morning while working to extinguish a fire that damaged a North Park business, authorities said.The blaze was reported around 5:30 a.m. at a single-story business on El Cajon Boulevard near Illinois Street, just west of Interstate 805, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Crews responded to the scene and found smoke and flames coming from the roof of the building, the agency reported. No one was inside the building at the time and firefighters knocked down the flames within about 20 minutes.One firefighter was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of a minor hand injury.The cause of the blaze was under investigation. 724

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A five-vehicle pileup at a College Area intersection left two young women severely injured and sent four others drivers to the hospital, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 63-year-old man driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion sitting in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street, Buttle said.The impact pushed both vehicles into the westbound lanes, where they were both struck by three vehicles -- a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic, the officer said. At that point, the Ford caught fire, leaving two 22-year-old women trapped inside before witnesses pulled them from the car.Both women suffered second- and third-degree burns over 70% of their bodies, along with uncontrolled internal bleeding, Buttle said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were considered life-threatening.The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Officer Tony Martinez said.The Nissan driver, a 20-year-old woman, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Buttle said.No details about the Honda driver were immediately available. 1427

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former investigator with the Department of Homeland Security was sentenced today to more than a decade in federal prison for taking drug money seized during his work as a federal agent, then laundering the funds that he used for personal expenses.Tyrone Cedric Duren, 50, who pleaded guilty to nearly 20 federal counts last year, was sentenced to 130 months in custody, plus three years of supervised release.U.S. District Judge John Houston also ordered the forfeiture of Duren's Bonsall home, a 5,000 money judgment and restitution to the Internal Revenue Service, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Duren was assigned to a bulk cash smuggling task force and, as part of his work, would investigate suspected drug traffickers transporting cash.After seizing money during those investigations, he would deliberately fail to report the cash and used the money for his and his families' own personal expenditures, including real estate and international travel, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Over the course of several years, Duren also placed GPS trackers on vehicles used to move drug proceeds, prosecutors said.Prosecutors cited an example from 2014, in which Duren tracked a vehicle heading toward Mexico, which was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint.After Duren seized cash found hidden in laundry detergent boxes in the vehicle, he took more than 0,000 for himself, which was later deposited into business and personal accounts to conceal those thefts,'' the U.S. Attorney's Office said.In addition, prosecutors say he didn't file taxes in 2013 to hide stolen funds and lied ``numerous times'' to investigating agents. 1675
