SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A recent bout with the flu nearly turned deadly for a San Carlos man when it took an unexpected turn.Five weeks ago, the usually healthy 58-year-old Dave Truby came down with the flu."Fever, nausea, inability to sleep ... body soreness," said Dave's brother, Mike.Mike his brother says Dave tried to fight through it. Some five days later, Dave went to an ER, but left because of the wait for beds. That same night at home, his brother found him in bad shape."Literally shaking in a fetal position," said Mike Truby.At the hospital, Mike received some devastating news. His brother's kidneys were failing, and the MRI showed brain damage from a massive stroke. "The brain wasn't getting clean blood. It was shutting down. The whole body was shutting down. They said it didn't look good," said Mike.Loved ones and friends braced for the worst."I said my prayers and breathed deep," he said.Those prayers were answered in gradual fashion. His kidneys started working and Dave started responding."The last two weeks, he moved his head, blinked, and mouthed words. Wheeled my mom into the hospital room a week ago, and he looked up and mouthed, 'Mom.' Gives us a lot of hope," he said. "You never think the flu is going to impact your life in a possibly terminal way."Much of his prognosis remains uncertain, but Mike is optimistic, though he's still a bit in shock over how this came about.Two recent studies suggest the flu can trigger strokes and lead to a prolonged risk lasting months. In Dave's case, he will survive his stroke. "Very thankful and very grateful. My brother has always been a stubborn, forceful man ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hillcrest man was left feeling helpless after he spots a burglar inside his home on Christmas Eve while he was on the other side of the country. Tyler Luna was visiting family in Mississippi when he wanted to check on a recent gift from a client. He got a red flower that is supposed to bloom on Christmas. Before he left, he set up surveillance cameras and placed the flower in a window nearby. He opened the app on his phone and saw the flower and a thief inside his home."Your heart sinks and its like what’s happening," Luna said. In a panic, Luna called 911 but the Mississippi dispatchers told him they couldn’t help. He flew home Christmas night and met with police immediately to file a police report. "It was very scary."When he went inside his home he found his class ring missing, his watch drawer empty of all watches, and some valuables in his nightstand, all gone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man reportedly attacked by four teenagers near Petco Park died Monday morning, family members tell 10News. 56-year-old Edward Leon Starland died several weeks after being attacked and beaten on November 18 around 2 p.m. Several teenagers, including 19-year-old Dominick Wells and three juvenile females ages 14, 15 and 17 were all taken into custody on felony battery charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A gunman is on the loose after a Thursday morning shooting at Barrio Logan’s Chicano Park left a 19-year-old injured.San Diego police were called to the 2000 block of National Avenue, off Interstate 5, at around 1 a.m. in response to reports of dozens of shots fired.Details on what prompted the gunfire were unclear, but police confirmed a 19-year-old person was struck. The victim was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment.The victim’s condition is unknown.Police are searching for a Hispanic man in his 20s in connection with the shooting. They believe the gunman fled in a dark gray or silver car.About an hour later, as police were investigating the shooting, someone in the car matching a description of the getaway vehicle fired shots while on southbound I-5 towards officers at the shooting scene.No one was hurt in that gunfire. 878

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rolando resident is taking Halloween decor to new heights this month, with a NASA-themed display outside his home.Greg Jones is known in the neighborhood for his elaborate Halloween displays. Every year, locals expect an out-of-this-world display. This year, he took that reputation literally.Saturday night, dozens of neighbors and volunteers witnessed the inaugural rocket launch outside the home at 4648 Rolando Blvd., which took months to complete.The celebratory launch came complete with Jones in costume as an astronaut, a moon rover, space capsules, and a 30-foot rocket.The massive space display will be up through Halloween, with a "rocket launch" visible each night.In years past, Jones has delivered a heaping dose of Halloween to his street, bringing mammoth displays including a giant Octopus and King Kong to life over his home. 872
