LeBron James already runs the NBA from a player's perspective, but now people want him to run the country's education system as well. An online petition is asking for signatures to get James considered to take over the Secretary of Education position from Betsy DeVos.The petition says they want James to step in as he has shown his desire to help at-risk children after opening his "I Promise" school in Akron, Ohio late last month which will give education to those children who would not otherwise be able to receive it. It also gives all those who graduate from the school free tuition to Akron University. James recently spoke to CNN's Don Lemon to discuss the new school as well as President Trump to elected DeVos to her position. Trump then went on to tweet about the interview, calling into question James' intelligence. The tweet led to a firestorm of responses calling into question Trump's intelligence as well as the Secretary of Education's. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers responded to the president's tweet by saying he, and many other athletes across different sports, support James and what he has done in the community, not just the NBA. The petition is looking for 12,000 signatures and currently has over 11,750.  1289

(AP) - Lake Elsinore’s Walker Canyon, site of a magnificent super bloom of poppies, reopened Monday after “Disneyland size crowds” overwhelmed the small Southern California city, creating what officials called a “miserable situation.” Social media photos showed heavy traffic on Interstate 15 near Lake Street and Nichols Road Sunday, where many visitors stopped and parked illegally to enjoy the flower fields. The California Highway Patrol issued a Sig Alert Monday and shut down the Lake Street offramp to control the situation. Despite the start of the work week, the number of visitors remained high Monday due to spring break, according to Nicole Dailey, assistant to the Lake Elsinore city manager. Dailey was not able to estimate the amount of people traveling to the flower fields. Four people were hurt over the weekend, Dailey said. Lake Elsinore businesses saw a boost, Dailey reported, but it has been “too much of an increase.” Starbucks emailed city officials saying they were overwhelmed by the demand and couldn’t keep up. “This weekend has become unbearable Lake Elsinore,” city officials posted, adding “it has been miserable and has caused unnecessary hardships for our entire community.” Lake Elsinore also reached out to other law enforcement agencies for assistance. “We have brought in all available staff, as many outside traffic controllers that we could, more shuttles, and our small City can not sustain crowds of this magnitude,” city officials said on Instagram. “We have reached out to our neighboring and county agencies for help. We have reached out to Caltrans. We have reached out to CHP. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — La Mesa's police chief will retire after more than five years in the role and following unrest over the police department's policing tactics.Chief Walt Vasquez announced Thursday that he will retire effective Aug. 27. LMPD says Vasquez delayed his retirement when the coronavirus hit in mid-March in order to continue serving through the pandemic."Over the past five years, our team has worked very hard to keep the citizens of La Mesa safe. The decrease in property and violent crimes in the City from 2015 to 2019 has been the largest decrease of all incorporated cities in San Diego County," Vasquez said in a statement. "This is extraordinary, especially when you take into consideration that the La Mesa Police Department is one of the lower staffed departments in the County. Crime decreases of this nature are only achieved through hard work and collaboration with the citizens we serve."Vasquez most recently was top cop after a controversial arrest video surfaced, showing a Black man, Amaurie Johnson, being shoved into a sitting position and arrested by a white cop. The cop that was at the center of that video is no longer employed by the city. Johnson has since filed a lawsuit against the city and the officers involved.Following the arrest, and on the heels of nationwide calls for police reform, a protest outside of La Mesa Police Department on May 30 saw a 59-year-old woman shot in the face by a bean bag round during the demonstration and hospitalized, bringing the department's response tactics into question. An investigation into that incident and the officer involved is still being conducted.As calls for police reform continued locally and across the nation, the department followed other law enforcement agencies and banned the carotid restraint technique.Prior to his role in La Mesa, Vasquez started his career in the San Diego Police Department in 1986. He achieved the rank of Assistant Chief before being sworn in as La Mesa's Chief in 2015.Vasquez also served on the Board of Directors of San Diego Youth Services for more than 10 years and has served on the Board of Directors of San Diego’s Trauma Intervention Program since 2018. LAKELAND, Fla. -- A 90-year-old Florida man who dressed in full protective gear to say goodbye to his wife, has died of COVID-19.In a Facebook post, Sam Reck's son-in-law shared the news that Sam has died.JoAnn Reck, Sam's wife of 30 years, died a few weeks earlier after battling COVID-19. She was 86 years old and Sam was 90.Sam Reck had been separated from his wife JoAnn Reck during the pandemic after the state placed a ban on visitors at nursing homes. JoAnn lived in a nursing home and suffered from dementia, and Sam lived in an apartment nearby.Family members said the couple would schedule socially-distant visits once Sam couldn't visit the home any more.
