CHONGQING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Environmental sanitation workers from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have collected 78,000 tonnes of garbage from the Yangtze River near the Three Gorges Dam, ensuring the dam's safe and effective operation after its water level was raised.More than 68,000 workers in nearly 21,000 boats retrieved the garbage.In late October, the water level in the dam was lifted to its designed maximum of 175 meters, allowing the dam to play its full flood control, power generation, navigation and water supply roles, said Wang Yuankai, a Chongqing municipal work administrator.Raising the dam's water level increased the surface area of water in the dam. It also increased garbage collectors' workload, with about 60 percent more garbage appearing.The cleanup operation helped ensure the water quality of the dam and its navigability.The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest water-control and hydropower project.

RIYADH, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese culture show was put up in the Saudi capital Riyadh as both countries mark the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties.The three-day event, sponsored by the kingdom's Culture and Information Ministry in tandem with the Chinese Culture Ministry, is being organized at Riyadh's huge King Fahd Culture Center.Saudi Culture Minister Abdulaziz Khouja said the show reflected friendly relationship between the two counties, hailing deeply- rooted ties binding his country and China.A 30-strong Chinese delegation, which included artists and musicians, has arrived in Riyadh to take part in the event.Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming paid a landmark visit to Saudi Arabia in early 2010, during which he said both countries are going to boost the two-way trade volume to 60 billion U.S. dollars by 2015.

CHENGDU, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A spreading grassland fire in a mountainous Tibetan region in southwest China proved deadly when it trapped soldiers and local residents trying to put out the blaze. By Sunday night, at least 22 have been killed and three severely burned, local officials said.The wild fire was raging through a grassland atop a plateau some six kilometers from the county government seat in Daofu County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province. About 500 mu (33.3 hectares) of the grassland has burned, while 200 mu (13 hectares) is still on fire, a source with local fire-fighters told Xinhua."The fire line stretches several kilometers long. As it darkens at night, most fire-fighters have retreated to the camps." Yang Hao, a senior local fire-fighting official told reporters. "However, we are still closely monitoring the situation."Prairie fire is seen in Daofu County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, Dec. 5, 2010. At least 22 people have been killed in the prairie fire.About 2,000 people have joined the fire-fighting efforts. Sichuan Governor Jiang Jufeng led a work-team to Daofu, some 580 kilometers from provincial capital Chengdu, late Sunday night. BANGKOK, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo announced here Wednesday that China will provide 10- million-yuan in cash aid to flood-hit Thailand. "China decided to offer Thailand a humanitarian emergency aid worth 10 million yuan and stood ready to provide other help,"Wu said in a meeting with Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.At least 181 people in Thailand were killed in nationwide floods that hace stricken the country since Oct. 10.
