SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neglecting dental hygiene can not only impact a person's overall health but also their self-esteem. For many San Diegans, a lack of insurance means they don't see a dentist for years or even decades. “I’ve seen people in my practice in the private area that haven’t been to the dentist in 20 to 40 years," said Dr. Irvin Silverstein, director of the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic Project.The student-run clinic has been working to fill the gap for low-income patients in San Diego for 20 years. “The biggest thing it has done is help meet the need in San Diego for a lot of underserved people. People think that underserved means homelessness or out on the streets, no. We see a lot of working poor," said Silverstein. He says the American Dental Association (ADA) is acknowledging dentistry should be a benefit in Medicare; to at least get teeth cleaned twice a year and examined.Medicaid does provide some dental coverage, but there are limitations, and only 20 percent of dentists nationwide accept it, according to the Center for Healthcare Strategies, Inc. Dr. Silverstein says he often sees parents getting care for their children while neglecting their own. “They’ll put off going to the dentist, and by the time they realize they have a problem, it’s so expensive they don’t know what to do. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More rain arrived in San Diego Wednesday, less than a week after a storm swept through the county, leaving some areas flooded and city crews preparing for the wet weather.In Coronado, on First Street, crews worked to clear pipes near the shoreline. This is a large reason for flooding in the area. Public Services Director, Clifford Maurer, says flooding comes after sand and sediment gets into the storm drain from the high tides.“Some of the outfalls, the pipes that go into the bay or into the open waters have flapper valves on them. So they only allow water to go out, not come in,” says Maurer. “But when the water is above those valves there’s nothing you can do. The bags are already filled and can be picked up at four different locations around the island.The City of San Diego is also preparing for the rain. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have arrested a suspect accused of shooting and killed a man outside a Clairemont home in January. Jeffery Alan Turner, 36, has been charged with murder after he reportedly shot and killed 52-year-old Frank Magana.Police were called to the home, located on the 4600 block of Sauk Avenue, on January 3 after receiving reports of a shooting.RELATED: Man shot in head outside Clairemont home dies?When police arrived they found Magana lying on the ground in front of his home with a gunshot wound to the head.A woman who lives near the home where the shooting took place said, "I looked at the clock because I heard a gunshot. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are asking for the public’s help identifying the driver they say struck and killed a pedestrian in Mission Hills Thursday before fleeing the scene.According to police, the 57-year-old man was struck by the vehicle while crossing the street on the 1300 block of West Washington Avenue just after midnight. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.Based on their investigation, police believe the suspect’s vehicle is a 2001-2002 Hyundai Sonata with damage to the headlamps or windshield.Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division at 858-495-7805 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime stoppers is offering up to a ,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. 758
