MARTIN COUNTY, Florida — As early as next week, you could start to see an improvement in the water quality in Martin County.Officials plan to start cleaning up some of the areas most impacted by algae. They hope to give residents some relief from the sight and smell of the algae and help the estuary recover from its damaging effects.Martin County Ecosystem Division Manager John Maehl said because the county declared a local state of emergency earlier this week, it can more quickly obtain grant funds from the Department of Environmental Protection to pay for and expedite clean up efforts.The plan is to get contracted clean up crews on the water early next week, possibly by Tuesday. Even before declaring the state of emergency, county officials had been interviewing and researching companies with technology they say can clean up the algae, without creating more harm to the environment.By next week, Maehl said at least a couple are prepared to get to work.In at least one case, they would be vacuuming the algae from the water.Exactly where the clean up will happen is unclear, but Maehl said the county has been surveying the area, looking to create a priority list of the places they will send crews to first.That could be areas such as Central Marine, typically hit hard by the thickest of the algae.“The really nasty stuff, try to get that out and take away the most noxious component of this and then let the estuary do its thing. The estuary is remarkably resilient,” Maehl said.This is the first year the county has taken on algae clean up effort, so it is a learning experience.“It’s a really complicated issue with a lot of different solutions and really the approach we’re taking is we’re throwing a lot of stuff against the wall and see what sticks,” Maehl said.Stuart resident Teresa Cooper is among those glad to see action being taken.She lives right along the water and can smell the stench of the algae while walking her dog.“I don’t walk him over there, so I just kind of keep him on the side, because it’s bothering me, I’m sure it’s bothering him,” Cooper said. “It hurts your throat and just smells very bad."Maehl said the county also hopes, by next week, to place booms in strategic areas to hold and collect algae. That could include putting a boom in canals leading to the St. Lucie Estuary to keep algae from flowing into the waterway.Maehl is not sure if the cleanup will last for weeks or months. 2457

Lots of folks do their shopping on the internet these days, especially on Amazon. Not only because it's convenient, but you can find some great bargains. But wait until you hear how much a woman in Gallatin, Tennessee was charged for some paper plates. It was certainly no deal. Lorie Galloway said she does a lot of shopping on Amazon. She's a Prime member and told Scripps station WTVF in Nashville, "I don't order anything unless it's free shipping." Just before Christmas, Galloway bought some plates. Then her husband, Bob Galloway, got the bill."He sent me a text," Lorie Galloway recalled. "'What did you order at Amazon?' And, I'm like, 'What?' He said, 'Our bill is a thousand and something dollars.'"Now these plates she bought were not the kind you keep in a china cabinet. These were heavy duty paper plates. A hundred of them. Lorie Galloway said she thought she was getting for with free shipping. It turns out, the plates were ."But there was a ,080 shipping charge," Bob Galloway explained.It cost more than ,000 to ship a package of paper plates. "I mean that's just crazy for paper plates," Lorie Galloway said.And, her husband added, "I really thought it was some clerical error."The Galloways repeatedly tried contacting the seller and got no response. So they called Amazon about the charge."The reaction from the customer service representative at Amazon was, 'Wow, that's ridiculous,'" Bob Galloway said. So were these plates coming from somewhere half way around the world? No, according to the paperwork, they were shipped by UPS from Atlanta. Amazon eventually agreed to open an investigation and the company told Lorie Galloway they'd determined she  was "not overcharged for the transaction."Lorie Galloway said she believed she was overcharged. According to Amazon, the seller said they'd "sent the plates with expedited service," that Lorie Galloway had selected that option when she placed her order and had agreed to the ,000+ shipping fee, something Galloway insists isn't true. "If it would have said a thousand and something dollars, I would have noticed that," she said. If you try finding the seller now who sold Lorie Galloway those plates, you won't. An Amazon rep told the couple the seller had been dismissed after doing similar things to other customers. But Amazon refused to confirm that for us.And Amazon was asked why it didn't have technology to flag and even prevent outrageous charges like this, the company refused to directly answer the question and instead sent a statement saying, "Amazon is constantly innovating and improving our customer experience. If customers have concerns or feedback, we encourage them to contact our Customer Service."But that's what the Galloways did and Amazon told them there was nothing they could do. Lorie Galloway said she is now reconsidering where she shops. "If they [Amazon] are not going to take care of their customers, why should I order from them again?" she said. The Galloways spent the last couple of months disputing the shipping charge with their credit card company. Finally, just the other day, they got word that the shipping would be refunded.  3398

Men who work in construction and extraction had the highest rates of suicide in the United States, according to a report published Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For women, suicide rates were highest among those who work in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media.From 2000 to 2016, the suicide rate among the US working-age population -- people 16 to 64 -- increased 34%, the report says.Using information from the 17 states that participated in the 2012 and 2015 National Violent Death Reporting System, the CDC analyzed the suicide deaths of 22,053 Americans of working age. Occupations were classified using the Standard Occupational Classifications from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.In 2015, the construction and extraction field had the highest rates of suicides for men, with 53.2 suicides per 100,000 working people. Women in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media had a suicide rate of 15.6 per 100,000 working people in 2015.Arts, design, entertainment, sports and media saw the largest increase in suicides among men: 47% from 2012 to 2015.For women, the largest increase -- 54% from 2012 to 2015 -- was among food preparation and serving-related occupations, such as chefs, bar managers and baristas.The occupational groups with the highest rates of suicide for men were: 1366

Major domestic airlines are adjusting to a “new normal,” one that will require masks and frequent sanitization.With changes amid the COVID-19 pandemic comes some degree of normalcy on board flights. For instance on Tuesday, Delta announced that alcohol service on board domestic flights greater than 500 miles will be restored on Thursday.Also,, United Airlines and American Airlines will both be unblocking middle seats, allowing for the possibility for full flights. Delta says it will continue to block middle seats through the end of September. Southwest is also keep the middle seat on flights blocked through at least September.American Airlines said last week that its air filtration system allows for those on board flights to breathe without fear of infection.“Over the past several years, American has been further improving our HEPA filters by adding a layer of activated carbon to our filters to provide additional removal of fumes, odors and volatile organic compounds,” said Ben Thiesse, American’s Senior Engineer for the Airbus A320 Family. “Today, these carbon HEPA filters are installed on all of American’s A320 and 787 aircraft.”United Airlines says, like other airlines, it is relying upon travelers to wear face masks to keep other travelers safe."Every reputable heath institution says wearing a mask is one of the most effective things people can do to protect others from contracting COVID-19, especially in places like an aircraft where social distancing is a challenge," said United's Chief Customer Officer, Toby Enqvist. Lutz, Fla. — The driver of a Tesla plowed through the wall of an empty storefront and then into the side of the Anytime Fitness on North Dale Mabry Highway in Pasco County, Florida.No one in the gym was hurt, although witnesses tell Scripps station WFTS in Tampa there were several people working out at the time, which was before noon on Sunday, April 22.The driver was also not injured.Florida Highway Patrol and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.The driver told troopers and deputies that she was coming into the parking lot to stop at the nearby nail salon, and said she was pressing the brakes, but the vehicle kept accelerating.The first store she crashed into used to be a karate studio where kids would normally be working out, but that business recently re-located.Her vehicle slammed through a second wall, into the gym next to several treadmills.Authorities did not administer a sobriety test, according to the crash report.Tesla vehicle are equipped with what is called “Auto-Pilot” mode, but auto-pilot is not the vehicle’s mode of functioning, especially if the vehicle is not on a highway and is turning into a parking lot. 1179
