WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is celebrating the first birthday of the U.S. Space Force by announcing that its members will be known as “guardians.” Vice President Mike Pence made the announcement during a celebratory event Friday tracing the development of the newest branch of the military over the past year. Pence says the men and women of the Space Force “will be known as guardians.” He adds that "soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and guardians will be defending our nation for generations to come.” President-elect Joe Biden has yet to reveal his plans for the Space Force in the next administration. 630

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The rallying cry of protesters in the wake of the death of George Floyd is quickly becoming "defund the police."THE REFORMSSome departments are taking steps to do just that. Los Angeles' mayor said he wants to cut the police budget by 0 million. New York's governor has signed into law a comprehensive package of reforms, including allowing police disciplinary records to be made public. Minneapolis' city council has committed to dismantling the police department. The Colorado General Assembly is passing legislation allowing officers to be sued. Currently, police are immune from civil lawsuits under what is known as "qualified immunity."All these steps have been praised by many advocates and for obvious reasons, they are tired of deaths like George Floyd's.POLICE CONCERNPolice unions, however, are sounding an alarm. While some reforms are welcomed, like a ban on chokeholds, they say others go too far. "Law enforcement is being crucified," Chief Alfonso Morales of the Milwaukee Police Department recently said. Now, there is a warning that it could lead to early retirements or a drop in recruits. "There are officers in my department talking about wanting to get out of law enforcement early," said Sgt. Rob Pride, a national trustee with the Fraternal Order of Police. Pride is more than just a union representative. Pride met with President Trump at the White House this week. Pride says movements to defund police departments will eliminate programs that most police officers actually like to take part in. "We will be relegated to be a reactive police force at best with no additional programs and no additional interaction other than to enforce the law and arrest people. That's not a profession I want to be a part of," Pride said. Pride also raised a concern about recruitment. The Police Executive Research Forum reported that before the latest protests, 63% of police departments nationwide saw a decrease in applications to become an officer in the last five years. Wasping is not a new and improved way to get rid of those pesky insects; it's a dangerous new drug trend, and it's causing concerns in Summit County, Ohio after three cases were reported in just one week.Inspector Bill Holland said the white foam spray used to eliminate wasps and hornets is being cut with meth by some drug users for a combination high."Some are spraying it on the meth. Some are spraying it in a manner where they can heat it up and then crystalize it, and then once it's crystallized, they can heat it up again and shoot it into their veins," Holland said.In three different cases over the last week, two men and a woman who appeared to be high were arrested.Once inside the Summit County Jail, they began experiencing hallucinations.Holland said the woman became flushed and agitated, and her vitals were off."Her body started to contort. It almost looked like if you spray a wasp, how they can kind of shrivel up and their body kind of cinches up," Holland said. "That's kind of how she looked."The woman, and one of the male inmates, were taken to a hospital for treatment, then returned to the jail."Once it's all over, they have no recollection of what happened," Holland said.Dr. Garry Thrasher with Oriana House said smoking or injecting the insecticide in combination with meth is very dangerous."Methamphetamines by themselves can cause psychotic behaviors, sometimes paranoia and even violence, and combining it with another substance that's abused is very problematic," Dr. Thrasher said.Both Holland and Thrasher have read about similar cases in the U.S., but the incidents documented at the jail were the first cases they've heard about locally.Dr. Thrasher urged people not to take a chance with the drug combo and stressed there are many treatment facility options for those struggling with addiction or abuse.Holland worries that others will make the foolish decision to try wasping, so he's sending out a warning about the severity of this new practice."It can be deadly for people and we don't want that to happen, but we do want to make people aware of what's going on out there," Holland said.  2212

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House is blocking the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from testifying before a House committee on how to safely reopen schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee Bobby Scott (D-Va.) said Friday that representatives asked for the CDC to testify in a public hearing next week to provide greater clarity on the steps that lawmakers can take to help schools educate students in a safe way, but the Trump administration blocked them.“It is alarming that the Trump administration is preventing the CDC from appearing before the Committee at a time when its expertise and guidance is so critical to the health and safety of students, parents, and educators,” wrote Scott in a statement. “This lack of transparency does a great disservice to the many communities across the country facing difficult decisions about reopening schools this fall.”Scott accused the Trump administration of prioritizing politics over science and harming the country in the process.“It should not make that same mistake when it comes to reopening schools,” said Scott.A White House official confirmed to CNN and The Hill that the administration is blocking the CDC’s participation in the hearing, saying the agency’s director, Dr. Robert Redfield, has testified at least four time over the last three months and suggested he and other doctors need to focus on the pandemic response.However, a spokesperson for the House committee told CNN that the panel had requested a testimony from any CDC official and it wasn’t exclusive to Redfield.The White House’s block comes at a time when Americans are debating whether sending children back to physical classrooms is a good idea, amid a surge in COVID-19 cases. The U.S. has seen record number of cases in the past several days.President Donald Trump has been adamant about students going back to the schools, even with many experts advising against it until the outbreak is more under control.
