SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Time is running out to sign up for the San Diego Promise, a tuition-free college program within the San Diego Community College District. So far more than 1,700 students from 198 California high schools have signed up for the program, which provides tuition and textbook grants for up to two years for first-time, full-time students. The deadline to apply is June 28. Officials with the district say about three times more students have so far signed up compared to last year. “The San Diego Promise offers much more than a financial guarantee,” said Lynn Neault, SDCCD Vice Chancellor of Student Services. “The program’s many wrap-around services result in San Diego Promise students faring better than their non-Promise counterparts academically.”To sign up, students need to complete a fall 2019 admissions application for City, Mesa or Miramar colleges, complete a 2019-2020 FAFSA application and fill out a Promise application. All first-time students are eligible to apply, regardless of financial status, the district says. The program launched in 2016 with 186 students participating. During the 2017-2018 school year, that number increased to 661. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo's newest resident is getting the hang of life as a rhino.Edward, the southern white rhino, experienced is first trot around the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center Monday.With his mom, Victoria, leading the way, Edward charged around the enclosure and even fit a mud bath into his busy schedule. It was the first time the mom and calf were released from the center's maternity yard and other off-exhibit areas.RELATED: Birth of baby rhino marks major milestone in effort to save critically endangered species“Victoria has been in the exhibit yard before but this was Edward’s first time,” said Jill Van Kempen, senior keeper at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “The second they entered the exhibit, Victoria just took off, running laps, and it was so fun to see Edward running right along beside her. He was very energetic, sometimes breathing heavily, and even getting all four feet off the ground at times.”For about 30 minutes, the zoo says Edward and Victoria took advantage of the larger space by running around and stretching their legs.Edward was born 23 days ago, becoming the first southern white rhino calf born via artificial insemination in the country. Edward was born weighing about 148 pounds, but now weighs about 243 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County migrant shelter is stepping up protocols Friday after officials announced the number of cases of migrants with flu-like symptoms doubled in 24 hours.A plane full of migrants landed at Lindbergh Field Friday around 1:15 p.m. The concern Friday is the flight may have more sick migrants.Border Patrol officials stated migrants are given a health screening in Texas before they travel to San Diego, and are screened again once they land.County Health officials say when they screened 47 migrants at their downtown shelter, they found 13 migrants with flu-like symptoms. A total of 29 migrants have been diagnosed with the flu since May 19, officials say. Twenty-four migrants are currently quarantined.RELATED: County responds to flu outbreak at shelter, linked to Texas migrants flown to San Diego"This is a new situation to us and I'm told it could get much worse," County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said.Once off the plane, the migrants who crossed illegally in Texas and flown to San Diego are taken to a Border Patrol Facility to be processed by ICE.Eventually, they end up at the shelter. There they get another health screening and starting Thursday, everyone gets a mask and Tamiflu pill as a precaution to keep the sickness from spreading.As of Friday, extra nurses are coming into the shelter to check on the group and ensure no one else has come down with the flu.Those who are diagnosed go with their families to a hotel that has individual air units, so they don't spread the virus. They are educated on why they should stay in the room and, if they leave, what precautions to take so they don't infect others.Migrants in the shelter can come and go as they wish.Border Patrol stated migrants who exhibit flu-like symptoms are not allowed to fly and instead are given medical treatment in Texas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The oldest San Diego women's choir is scrambling to raise funds for a last-second trip to sing at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. The Choral Club of San Diego dazzled crowds from veterans homes to Spreckles Organ Pavillion. They've been singing since 1939."It was a very private women's group. They all got together in their homes and they had tea," Executive Director Caron Andregg said, painting the picture of what the club looked like back then. In 2012, they officially became a 501(c)(3) non-profit and over the past five years they've been tuning to a more modern note."We've filtered out a lot of the older traditional music and we started filtering in more modern music," Andregg said.She said the crowds have loved it and they've ran with it, gaining notoriety and ultimately an invite to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. Andregg added someone personally recommended the club to the organizers of the event on Honolulu."Getting 25 ladies to Hawaii is no small task," Music Director Kyle Adam Blair said. The group has been frantically making calls for two weeks, but are not gaining any traction."I can't even get people to pick up their phones ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The body of a 9-year-old boy swept away by a current in Rosarito on Easter Sunday has been found in Mexico.Authorities say the body of Erik Ochoa was found around 10 a.m. Thursday morning at San Antonio Del Mar.Ochoa lived in Tijuana with his stepfather while his sisters, Zusel and Hilary live in Chula Vista.RELATED: Family searches for boy swept away in Rosarito?Ochoa was with two other children walking on the beach in Rosarito when they were swept out to sea.One of the boys was able to make it out of the current and ran to get help.
