BOCA RATON, Fla. - A young girl with a big heart and a love of music recently started a charity event to raise money in the fight against Parkinson's disease.Music has been a part of 11-year-old Kasey Moore's life since she picked up a violin at the age of three."I enjoyed it more and more as I grew older," Kasey said.Now, she is practicing playing the piano every day."When I practice, some part inside of me gets alive," Kasey said.Because of the pandemic, she's been able to dedicate more time to her musical passion while at home with her family.Her father, Dr. Henry Moore, is a neurologist at the University of Miami who specializes in movement disorders like Parkinson's disease."He helps people that suffer from this terrible disease called Parkinson's, and this disease affects their brain," Kasey said. Moore has been spending more time working from his home office, which gave Kasey a chance to feed her curiosity while her dad cared for patients."She was very moved by people, how they were very disabled, and then with the medication, they were super happy and so hopeful that this disease will stop," Moore said."It really touched my heart, and I wanted to do something to help, but I wasn't sure how," Kasey said.She decided to do her part to fight Parkinson's disease by creating a fundraiser called "Parkin-Song." WPTV Kasey Moore's love of music started at an early age, and she continues to play the piano regularly. The goal is to use music to raise money and awareness on behalf of the Parkinson's Foundation."The way we always have raised her is to think first [about] others, and that will give you happiness," said Kasey's mother.Kasey's music and kind heart quickly got the attention of some big names, including Gloria Estefan. Her father said she's onto something with the healing power of music."There is music therapy even tested for Parkinson's disease patients, and it helps a lot. (AP) — A Georgia judge has denied bond for the white father and son charged with murder in the February slaying of Ahmaud Arbery.Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley said Friday that he's concerned Gregory McMichael and his adult son, Travis McMichael, took the law into their own hands and endangered neighbors when they pursued the 25-year-old Black man with guns and shot him in a residential street in February.Defense attorneys say the McMichaels had reason to suspect Arbery was a burglar and Travis McMichael was defending himself when he shot Arbery in the port city of Brunswick.During a hearing Thursday, prosecutors said Travis McMichael had previously used racial slurs in text messages and on social media.Prosecutors asked the suspect’s friend, Zachary Langford, on the witness stand about a text in which McMichael used a slur for Black people. At first, he said he didn’t recall receiving the message, but after reviewing a transcript of the exchange, he said “He was referring to a raccoon, I believe,” The Associated Press reports.Attorneys for the McMichaels have died any racist motives in the shooting.The McMichaels were not arrested until May, when the Georgia Bureau of Investigation stepped and charged them with murder and aggravated assault.There was mounting public pressure for justice in the case after video was released of the deadly incident. The case gained attention nationwide during the summer’s protests over racial injustice.The man who filmed the video, William Bryan, was also later arrested and charged with murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment, according to The New York Times.In June, The Times says a grand jury returned an indictment with nine counts against all three men. BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — When Devon Wilson purchased two acres of land on Kendall Street in late June, one of the first things he did was invite people to see it and give them space to grieve.George Floyd had just been killed in Minneapolis and his death sparked global and nationwide protest, including a few in southwest Michigan.“One of the first things I did was invite the community to come here in order to use a lot of that anger and hurt that we were feeling in our hearts and that passion that we were feeling in a good way,” Wilson said during an interview on Tuesday September 15. “We can sit out here and protest in the streets and that’s needed too. But, at the end of the day, we also got to perform some tangible action that’s going to create something that’s empowering.”For the 23-year-old, that’s food and nutrition education. Since June, Wilson and others have transformed the land into Sunlight Gardens, a farm where they now grow kale, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables and leafy greens.“When you eat healthy, you get your body right. You get your mind right,” Wilson said, while wearing a blingy necklace that read "farmer." “It’s very foundational. This is where I’m starting my work is with the farming because this is building a foundation that our community can build ourselves up on.”Wilson said one of his goals is to teach inner-city communities how to grow their own foods so people aren’t always relying on groceries stores to get their foods. He said the coronavirus pandemic, and the food insecurity that rose because of it, reaffirmed for him the significance of communities becoming self-reliant.“A deer can take care of itself. It knows where to get food from and knows where to get water,” Wilson said. “We think we’re so smart and so advanced but it’s like really a deer can take care of itself better than a human can in certain aspects of just survival and being resourceful.”Wilson began learning about being resourceful and food and nutrition after years of eating unhealthy. He said he grew up in a food desert, less than a mile away from where the farm is today.“It’s only liquor stores and corner stores that are around here. I loved food. I was a chubby kid. I loved to eat a lot,” Wilson said. “I would go to the liquor store and buy hot Cheetos and Honey Buns and that’s what I ate.”He said he loved the taste of it. However, it wasn’t nutritional. And when he researched and learned at 16 years old about farming history and how it was rooted in slavery, it spurred him even more to eat right.“We have always been genius-level farmers,” Wilson said. “So, I’m just continuing that heritage. I feel my ancestors walking through me, always affirming me to do this work.”He’s grateful that grants from the Battle Creek Foundation and the Michigan Good Food Fund have allowed him to do the work. He envisions the farm one day being solar powered, and a place where kids not only learn how to purify water but can listen to music and talk about fashion.In the meantime, he’s focused on farming and food education and hopes it inspires people to be resourceful and take care of themselves.“When you think about farming right now, a lot of times the image that you get is kind of like old, white man on a tractor in the big field, in the country. BARTOW, Fla. — A Walt Disney World bus driver was arrested after deputies say he tried to lure a 15-year-old girl for sex.Kevin Van Orman, 35, was arrested March 25 by undercover detectives when he arrived at a home in Bartow, where he planned to meet up with the teenage girl for sexual activities.According to the Polk County, Florida Sheriff's Office, Van Orman used the app "Whisper" to respond to a post that had been placed by an undercover detective pretending to be a 15-year-old girl. 506
