Scientists knew 2020 was going to be an active tropical storm and hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean. We’re now running out of names on the official list, so what happens next? The Greek alphabet.In early August, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted 19-25 total named storms in the Atlantic this year, and 7 to 11 becoming hurricanes. Colorado State University’s Tropical Weather and Climate Research Center also predicted an above-average year, with about 24 named storms and 12 hurricanes.With so many storms were predicted, why wasn’t a longer list of names created? Since 1953, the National Hurricane Center, a group within NOAA, has released a list of 21 potential names in alphabetical order. “They are now maintained and updated through a strict procedure by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization,” according to NOAA.The lists are rotated every six years, meaning names from 2019 will be used again in 2025. Names are sometimes retired from the list when a named storm is so deadly or costly that reusing the name would be inappropriate for “reasons of sensitivity.”Yes, 21 names and not 26. Because of the lack of names for some letters, there are no storms using the letters “Q”, “U”, “X”, “Y”, or “Z.”As of this writing, the only remaining name on the list is Wilfred.The National Hurricane Center has determined that if there are more than 21 named storms in a season, the remaining storms will take names from the Greek alphabet.For those of us who need a refresher on those letters: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Nu, Xi, Omicron, Pi, Rho, Sigma, Tau, Upsilon, Phi, Chi, Psi and Omega.The first time the back-up naming system was used was in 2005. SEATTLE (KGTV) -- Officials in Washington are investigating a hijacking from Sea-Tac Airport Friday night. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, the plane was stolen by a 29-year-old suicidal man. The Pierce County Sheriff confirms that the stolen Horizon airplane crashed into Ketron Island. Preliminary information is that a mechanic from an unknown airline stole the plane and was doing stunts in the air and lack of flying skills caused the person to crash. Two military F-15 chased the plane but were not involved in the crash.  581

(KGTV) — Cameras caught a thief wreaking havoc at an East County business park, culminating in several destructive acts after he realized he was locked in.Scott Trafton has seen the video countless times, but his emotions have yet to lessen."Aggravating and makes me angry," said Trafton, who owns XP Builders.Just before midnight last Thursday night, a truck is seen driving into a business park on Wheatlands Court. The truck, believed to be a Chevy Silverado, is parked in the dark for more than four hours, before a man emerges and heads toward Trafton's general contractor business. In the video, the man grabs items from the truck bed, before prying open a toolbox in the back. A knife at this side, the man would get away with more than a thousand dollars with of Trafton's tools. "It hurts being a small business. Every penny counts," said Trafton.Trafton is not the only victim. The thief left behind a trail of shattered truck windows and missing items."Basically took whatever wasn't bolted down," said Trafton.When the man went to leave, he was met by a gate, locked by someone who had left earlier. The camera spies him apparently chaining his truck to the fence and pulling forward, but he can't get the fence down."He then came over to another truck and broke a window. He then took a moving blanket to protect his truck and drove to another fence," said Trafton.In the video, you can see the flash of his lights, before his final act."He ran into the fence, spread it wide open and knocked it over," said Trafton.The repair bill will tally some ,000. School nurses already have a lot of responsibilities, but the possibility of students being back in classrooms this fall may add a new duty: screening for COVID-19."There seem to be no certainties. The guidance changes frequently and there is some concern that the guidance doesn’t take into account the realities in a school building," says Laurie Combe, the President of the National Association of School Nurses.Combe says the pressure will be on school nurses to help screen and isolate any students or staff who could be showing symptoms of COVID-19. But not all schools across the country have the ability to do this."We're supposed to isolate those students or staff members and does a school have the space or capacity to do that?" says Combe.According to the Department of Education, there are 98,000 public schools in the United States. The National Association of School Nurses’ research has shown 25% of those schools have no access to a school nurse."Not part-time, not one nurse covering multiple schools, just no school nurse," says Combe.“COVID has revealed to us is that schools are relying heavily on school nurse expertise to guide their procedures and policies moving forward into reopening,” Combe added. “So what do those schools that don’t have a school nurse do?"Visalia Unified School District in California has about 32,000 students. The district's 12 credentialed school nurses help lead an additional 36 nurses in meeting students' health needs."Our health department reached out and identified the 12 school nurses as emergency disaster workers so instead of enjoying a summer vacation, the nurses are working at the health department and helping to monitor COVID," says the district's Director of Health Services Suzie Skadan. Skadan says that extra experience will be helpful when school is back in session."They will have this additional experience and hands-on happening so they will know what to do when we come back," says Skadan.Visalia unified is working closely with their local health department to put every CDC-recommended protocol in place come the fall."It is an added burden for the school nurse but it's very necessary to keep our students safe. So we think planning ahead and having systems in place will make the best of this situation," says Skadan. Both the National Association of School Nurses and Visalia Unified say ideally there'd be more nurses on hand this fall."Unfortunately, we're having big budget cuts. It's been a bad budget year and then we have COVID on top of that so we are not hiring additional nursing staff. We schedule people around to make things work so hopefully we can manage it this way," says Skadan.While not every school will have the ability to test students for COVID this next school year, the National Association for School Nurses expects more students will be tested. Combe refers to a recent conversation she had with a teacher."I said, ‘So what are you going to do if a child in your classroom starts coughing?’ Normally you would send that child to get some water or you know help them manage that. She said, ‘I’m sending that child to the school nurse,'" says Combe.Combe says nurses focus much of their time on health education for students, faculty and their entire school community, a role that will be amplified come next school year. 3334
