SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local college professor says her a electric scooter ride ended painfully after the scooter turned off in the middle of the ride.Jenny Mahoney, a professor of biology and kinesiology at Point Loma Nazarene University, was with three friends on scooters in December, headed to December Nights in Balboa Park. She says her friends were on Bird scooters, while she was on a Lime scooter with plenty of charge. The ride came to an end two minutes along Harbor Drive near the airport."I was in the bike lane and went from full speed to a dead stop," said Mahoney.She says the screen went blank as the scooter shut down. She remembers her body slamming into the handlebars and was then thrown off the scooter."A lot of pain. I wasn't able to breathe. Got the wind knocked out of me," said Mahoney.Mahoney says one of her friends crashed into her. He got up and carried her out of the bike lane. She suffered a broken bone in her hand, and a sprained wrist and ankle."You assume when you're on these scooters and following all the safety rules rules, you're going to get to your destination safely, but that didn't happen," said Mahoney.The question now: Has it happened before? Mahoney filed a claim with Lime before hiring attorney Evan Walker. Walker tells 10News he just got another call from a Seattle tourist whose wife remains hospitalized in San Diego from a similar incident with a Lime scooter."My understanding is that there have been numerous complaints of a similar nature made about these devices and that Lime is well aware of these complaints," said Walker.In late February, Lime issued a warning to riders of a technical bug that caused sudden excessive braking, usually downhill. Lime says in those cases, the scooter didn't shut off. While Mahoney doesn't know if those cases are related, she doesn't believe her incident is the only one. "I want them to take responsibilities for these injuries that are occurring ... and I want people to be aware, it's not as safe as they think it is," said Mahoney.A Lime spokesperson declined to talk about Mahoney's incident but issued the following statement: “Our entire global fleet has now been fully updated with the final firmware fix that appears to have eliminated occurrences of excessive braking, and we continue to closely monitor the issue to ensure it is categorically resolved.” 2375

YIMBY for "yes in my backyard." Their solution is for more dense development in urban areas where people can live and work. They also seek legislative reform and developments that help combat climate change."It's basic supply and demand," said member Dike Anyiwo. The city recently passed Mayor Kevin Faulconer's plan eliminating parking requirements near transit centers. And the YIMBYs are getting visits from some key politicians, including Assemblyman Todd Gloria, City Councilmembers Monica Montgomery and Chris Ward, and County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. Plus, some of its members are now landing spots on city planning groups. Anyiwo is now on the Midway Pacific Highway Community Planning Group. Still, concerns remain that the YIMBY plans could lead to too much crowding for the city's infrastructure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new interactive map produced by San Diego County officials shows the cities and communities hardest hit by the coronavirus.The county launched its COVID-19 case rate map on Thursday, and it uses a color tier system similar to the state’s “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” reopening plan.Users can look at case rates per 100,000 residents in specific areas or search by ZIP code.County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said, “Cities had previously requested the map to determine how they are faring during the pandemic. The map gives cities a clearer picture of how COVID-19 is impacting their residents and will help them determine whether to take more aggressive actions to enforce the public health guidance to slow the spread of the virus.”San Diego County tallied a record 661 coronavirus cases on Nov. 10. Purple tier-related restrictions take effect midnight on Saturday, Nov. 14.Many nonessential businesses will be required to move to outdoor-only operations. These include restaurants, family entertainment centers, wineries, places of worship, movie theaters, museums, gyms, zoos, aquariums and cardrooms.The restrictions include closing amusement parks. Bars, breweries and distilleries will be able to remain open as long as they are able to operate outside and with food on the same ticket as alcohol.Retail businesses and shopping centers will be able to remain open with 25% of the building's capacity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit and business owner came together to donate thousands of dollars to families in need during the pandemic Wednesday.Non-profit Black San Diego started up in September with the goal of bolstering Black-owned businesses and giving them tools to succeed.They have a Facebook page with 36,000 members.On December 19th, Porschia Wyatt posted asking for prayers for her family."Recently my husband was laid off from his job, he works for the Cheesecake Factory, so time’s been hard for me and my family," she said.She and her husband have a 15-year-old daughter, 7 and 8-year-old sons and a 20-month old daughter.Getting Christmas presents was going to be hard, and November 16th made it even more difficult."I had just ate pizza and next thing you know I started throwing up and I couldn’t breath or anything so I was rushed to the hospital," she said she had an abdominal blockage.She underwent three surgeries and came home on the 25th. Now she had huge medical bills to worry about, which was what pushed her to type a message to the BSD community.She got an overwhelming response, more than a hundred comments and a surprise at her doorstep Wednesday morning.Jaime Harris, owner of Big Block Realty, was holding a giant check for ,000."There are so many families that are affected you know? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Pacific Beach woman is appealing for tips after a hit-and-run driver struck the motor scooter she was riding, leaving her with serious injuries.On Saturday afternoon around 1 p.m., yoga teacher Fallon Lev was headed to a yoga studio, riding her motor scooter on Ingraham Street, when she exited onto Sunset Cliffs Boulevard."Just gotten onto the ramp, going a reasonable speed," said Lev.In a one-lane section, she looked to her left and felt a car right next to her."It bumped me, causing the scooter wiggle back and forth. Instantly, I'm like on the floor, and my whole body is tumbleweeding on the cement. I must have gone five or six times," said Lev.She says the driver kept going. Later, at the hospital came the diagnosis and surgery."I broke my pelvis in two different areas and have these two bars sticking out of my hipbone and a bar straight across," said Lev.She also suffered a painful road rash and a broken tooth. Her road to recovery will be a long one. Lev, a yoga teacher whose income was greatly impacted by the pandemic, is trying to stay positive. The actions of the driver make her angry."I'm trying not to affect it my healing. Of course, it's extremely disturbing and disappointing ... There is no way the driver didn’t see me go down. They actively chose to leave me," said Lev.In fact, Lev remembers feeling like this was no accident. She was leaving traffic on a one-lane section of the roadway."I felt like it was on purpose. I wasn’t going fast enough, and that was my payback," said Lev.Lev is now hoping for tips to track down a hit-and-run driver."The driver deserves to know that’s not the way you treat a human being," said Lev.Lev recalls an older model, maroon sedan, which may have been the car right behind the car that hit her.
