According to AAA of Southern California, 3.5 million SoCal residents plan to travel for the holiday, marking an all-time travel record for the holiday for the third year in a row. 79 percent of travelers in California are expected to travel by car, while 13 percent are planning to fly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Iconic TV host Regis Philbin, who has roots in San Diego television history, has died at the age of 88, multiple news outlets report.According to a family statement obtained by PEOPLE, Philbin passed away from natural causes Friday night.Philbin returned to his roots in 2018 with a visit to 10News.After a stint in the United States Navy, he moved to San Diego where he launched a career in broadcast. He was able to book many top celebrities including Jerry Lewis, Ronald Reagan, Danny Thomas, and Liberace.His talk show, which was produced at the now KGTV studios from 1961 to 1965, aired live from 11:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. every Saturday night."The show became a big hit so it was time to go to Hollywood, I guess, so I did," said Philbin.Philbin moved his show to Los Angeles, before being hired in 1967 as the sidekick for a national talk show, "The Joey Bishop Show." It was a special moment for me."And that’s the same way Fred Norfleet described Philbin, who he worked with for years as a stage manager on his San Diego morning show."I’m sure he had a heart for San Diego you now. Everybody knew him. Everybody liked him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside the 3D Innovations Lab at Rady Children's Hospital, the hearts, bones, skulls, and spines of patients are brought to life in a new way.Justin Ryan, Ph.D. is director of the lab. Using 3D printers, they can replicate a patient's anatomy down to every precise detail, giving doctors critical information before surgery.“The concept is by giving our doctors more information they can perform a better procedure; they can even perform it with less time. So that means less time under bypass, less time under anesthesia, which is great for the patients themselves," said Ryan.For example, if a patient is a candidate for a stent or valve, doctors could use the 3D model to try different sizes before entering the operating room. “We give them more information to plan a better procedure," said Ryan. While some of the models take several hours, many can be created within the day. “There isn’t an average day, I might have a cardiac case in the morning, an ortho case in the evening, I'll have a doctor have an idea for a medical device that they wanted to design or develop, and that all happens here," said Ryan. Ryan says the 3D models are also useful when explaining the procedure to families. The technology is currently being funded by grants and donations, at no extra cost to families. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In the wake of the Florida tragedy, the weapon used by the shooter - the AR-15 - is once again in the spotlight.RELATED: Florida shooting suspect to plead guiltyRolando resident Wendy Hauffen bought her first AR-15 five years ago."The magazine holds 10 rounds just like a standard handgun because in California, we're limited to 10 rounds," said Hauffen.Hauffen, a member of San Diego County Gun Owners, says state requirements actually make an AR-15 slower to load than a handgun. With the required so-called bullet button feature, gun owners need a tool like an allen wrench to release the magazine.But anti-gun violence advocates say the rifle is still more dangerous than a handgun."It's designed to be more accurate. It's designed to project a bullet faster and more lethally," said Ron Marcus, Director of Public Outreach for San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention.Starting last year, state law extended the assault weapons ban to include the sales of the AR-15 with the bullet buttons. Owners can still keep their AR-15s, but they have to register the gun with the state by June."If a gun is used in a crime, we need to be able to know how it got into the possession of the person who has it," said Marcus."I don't think it's going to be effective at all...the law-abiding citizens are following the law," said Hauffen. "The bad guys won't be registering their guns."Hauffen says registering the gun at the initial purchase is sufficient, but Marcus points out some transactions, like sales between private sellers and family, are hard to trace.State officials haven't released numbers, but it's estimated there are thousands - if not tens of thousands - of legally owned AR-15s in California. 1738

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kids and teens struggling with their mental health during the Coronavirus Pandemic and weeks of protests over racial injustice have a new way to cope.BlueShield CA has expanded its Blue Sky program, increasing funding to local mental health organizations and giving kids a platform to share tips on dealing with anxiety and depression."There's a greater need now than ever," says Blue Sky Program Manager Amanda Lasik. "There's a greater need to speak to youth voices and listen and learn from what's going on."According to the CDC, 7.1% of kids age 3-17 have been diagnosed with anxiety, and 3.2% of kids in the same age group have been diagnosed with depression. Experts believe those numbers will rise because of the pandemic and protests.As part of the expansion, Blue Sky partnered with DoSomething.org to launch the "New State of Mind" campaign. Kids send tips for coping to the website, which get published through emails, texts, and social media."The response has been overwhelming," says Lasik. "When we were originally planning this campaign, we thought it'd be great if we got about 17,000 tips. We've already received over 60,000."In addition to the "New State of Mind" effort, Blue Sky has provided 0,000 to 18 youth organizations in San Diego and Alameda county.
