SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Padres kept their season alive Thursday with a come from behind win against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Padres lost the first game of the wild card series, but Thursday’s win forces a third game against the Cardinals.“Feeling incredible,” Padres fan Chris Pekos said after the game. “As a native San Diegan, I’ve loved The Pardes forever. We’ve waited a long time for a huge win like this.”Pekos was one of many Padres fans that watched the game in one of the downtown restaurants near Petco Park. However, large crowds, typically expected during a make-or-break game, were noticeably absent, likely due to the pandemic and social distancing rules. The Padres play the Cardinals in game three on Friday. 743

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The relatives of a toddler who died from E. Coli he contracted from San Diego County Fair animals held a fundraiser for his parents Saturday night. The benefit to help the family of 2-year-old Jedidiah King Cabezuela started at 4 p.m. at Rosie O’Grady’s restaurant in Normal Heights. Jedidiah’s great uncle Ed Sanford told 10News the boy suffered stomach problems four days after visiting the fair despite washing his hands after visiting the petting zoo. Over the next three days, Jedidiah was in and out of the emergency room before the symptoms worsened. His kidneys began failing, and he died June 24. RELATED: Two-year-old boy dead, three sickened due to E. Coli linked to San Diego County FairSanford says he will always remember Jedidiah as a happy boy, always laughing. “He’s upstairs now, a little angel. I said a little prayer; I told the Lord, I said, you got your hands full,” Sanford said. Sanford says he is glad fair officials shut down the petting zoo. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The trial started Wednesday for two San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies facing criminal charges after an arrest in Vista. Deputies Nicholas Morgan and Joshua Nahan are charged with assault for what District Attorney Summer Stephan calls illegal actions during the encounter. Gerardo Martinez Jr. and his father were taken into custody last May after the deputies responded to a domestic violence call. RELATED: Controversial video of sheriff's deputies prompts investigationMartinez Jr.’s girlfriend had called 911 to report being punched by her boyfriend. Part of the 911 call was played for jurors during opening statements Tuesday. The panel also saw cell phone video of the arrest recorded by a neighbor. The now-viral video shows Deputy Nahan push Martinez Sr. into a fence while handcuffed. Martinez Jr. was repeatedly struck in the head by Deputy Morgan while on a concrete sidewalk. “Law enforcement officers hold a position of trust in our community and are required to abide by the rules in the exercise of their powers. The evidence on which the charges are based shows the force used by the two deputies exceeded the legal line, violating that public trust. For justice to thrive, it is important that no one is above the law,” Stephan said in November. RELATED: San Diego County DA's Office files charges against deputies involved in violent arrest The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department sent a statement to 10News last fall, which read in part, “The Department does not tolerate misconduct of any kind. We have the utmost confidence in the criminal justice system and we will continue to coordinate with and support the District Attorney's Office as these cases move through the judicial process." If convicted, Deputy Morgan could face up to two years in jail. Deputy Nahan could face one year for misdemeanor assault, if a jury finds him guilty. 1891

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three prominent Democrats have filed papers with the City of San Diego declaring their intention to run for mayor in 2020. San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry, Assemblyman Todd Gloria, and Congressman Scott Peters all submitted documents to the City Clerk, allowing them to fund raise for the 2020 primary on March 3. They would replace Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, who is termed out in 2020. Bry formally announced her candidacy on Wednesday. She said her experience as a high tech entrepreneur and nonprofit leader give her a unique approach to tackling key city issues like cost of housing, homelessness, clean energy, and educating students for the jobs of tomorrow. RELATED: San Diego politics coverage"We will be building a grassroots campaign with hundreds of volunteers and neighborhood coffees all over the city," Bry said. "That will be very important for me to get my message out and to meet people and to learn about their issues."Peters, recently re-elected to the House of Representatives, was in Washington D.C. and unavailable for an interview. A spokeswoman for the Congressman said he formed an exploratory committee but has made no decision yet as to whether to run. A spokesman for Gloria, who served as interim mayor after Bob Filner resigned in 2013, would only say "stay tuned."Political analyst John Dadian said he expects Republicans to file to run for the spot soon. The job is technically non-partisan."Even though they're all Democrats, don't look at it as a monolith," he said. "They all have supporters for different reasons. They all have championed different issues."So far, six people have filed to run for mayor in 2020. In addition to Bry, Gloria and Peters, J'Erek Evans, Cedric Greene, and Rich Riel have filed papers. 1794
