SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say possible human remains were discovered in a Fiesta Island fire pit early Thursday.Just after 10:30 a.m., a man on the east side of the island flagged down San Diego Lifeguards after making the grim discovery. Officers responded and sent an image to a forensic anthropologist, who confirmed the remains were possibly human.ABC 10News spoke to the man who made the discovery. Dan Conklin says he was hoping to spend the day on Fiesta Island and was planning to grill some hot dogs when he parked his van near the fire pit. Conklin says he noticed a lot of trash surrounding the pit and some extra wood, so he decided he would stay. When he started cleaning up, he says, he noticed what looked like human remains. "I kept thinking it was a joke, something to do with Halloween, it had to be a mannequin or a dummy or something that you put on your porch or something," said Conklin. Conklin says he flagged down a lifeguard in the bay who then called police. Conklin says when he arrived at the pit, it was still smoldering. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego is reintroducing its popular annual SoCal Pass as the park prepares to offer new attractions for guests.The SoCal Pass, also known as the "Silver Annual Pass," is available for 1.99, or .24 a month with a down payment, the park says, and contains hundreds of dollars in benefits. The deal is only good online. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State lawmakers approved funding to hire an additional 230 employees for California DMVs. The decision comes on the same day they shut down a proposal to audit long wait times at offices throughout the state. DMV officials say they've seen a surge in demand at offices from people getting the new REAL ID License, which you can't do by mail or online. State Assemblymember Phil Ting is spearheading an effort to shorten the wait. He says wait times at some offices were up to seven hours. "We've identified some technological fixes so that people can enter the information," said Ting. "There would be less clerical work."In July, lawmakers added an extra million to the DMV budget. The extra funding would allow them to hire 500 more employees, offer Saturday services and upgrades to some self-service kiosks. Assemblymember Ting got onboard when he had to go to the DMV in San Francisco and saw the line wrapped around the block. "It looked like people were waiting in line for a rock concert," said Ting. "Not for their driver's license."He says another problem was that people were waiting too long to renew.  "People couldn't get appointments before their licenses were expiring," said Ting. "We're asking to send those notices out much further in advance."DMV officials are also rolling out new programs like text message notifications and expanding self-service terminals to 50 grocery stores later this year. Drivers who want to get a REAL ID would still have to go into an office. DMV officials say you can expect to see reduced wait times by the middle of September, but they don't expect what they call "reasonable" wait times until December. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Red Cross Volunteers are stepping up to help the many communities at risk of Hurricane Dorian's wrath.So far 20 volunteers have been assigned to the disaster, 18 will be on the ground, and two are working remotely.John Stone is deploying Tuesday evening to South Carolina, he's responded to over 20 disasters."You catch the bug, I mean you're helping people recover from a natural disaster, every disaster is different," said Stone. Stone says this deployment is more personal; his daughter lives in Charleston."I emphasize with her to have a plan, be ready to go, it's my grandchildren you're dealing with, I want you to be safe," said Stone.At any moment, the local Red Cross could be asked to send more volunteers. On Monday night, more than 12,200 people stayed in 171 Red Cross and community evacuation shelters in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
