The delegates also voted down a new set of proposed rules that would have let each church decide how to handle issues of sex and gender.``The traditionalists within the United Methodist Church have chosen to exclude and marginalize LGBTQIA+ Christians whose only desire is to serve their church and express the Love of God in the world,'' said Brandan Robertson, the lead pastor at Missiongathering Christian Church. ``Nothing could be more antithetical to the message Jesus embodied and proclaimed.''According to San Diego Pride, 65 percent of people in the LGBTQ community identify as religious or spiritual in some way. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Prior to today's San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, the Port of San Diego will host the annual Solar Turbines 5K run/walk and the Holiday Bowl Parade along Harbor Drive.The Port will host the 24th annual Solar Turbines 5K run and walk at 9:45 a.m. and the parade at 10 a.m. Participants in the 5K will run and walk from the corner of Harbor Drive and Ash Street to Ruocco Park. The parade will begin in front of the County Administration Building and process south down Harbor Drive to its intersection with Pacific Highway.According to Port officials, the parade will include 29 giant balloons, 10 marching bands and multiple floats and drill teams. The marching bands from Northwestern University and the University of Utah, the two teams playing in the Holiday Bowl, will perform during the parade."The Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade is one of the Port's signature events, bringing approximately 100,000 spectators, including many from out of state, to the beautiful San Diego bayfront," said Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Rafael Castellanos. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Testimony wrapped up Friday in the trial of a North Carolina man accused of raping and murdering a 79-year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than three decades ago.Kevin Thomas Ford, 63, is charged with murder and a special- circumstance allegation of murder during a rape in connection with the May 20, 1987, death of Grace Hayden.Ford is accused of strangling the victim. Last year, investigators with the District Attorney's Office's identified Ford as a suspect through DNA evidence, prosecutors say, as well as a single fingerprint he allegedly left on Hayden's stovetop.RELATED: April trial date set for man accused in 1987 rape, murder of San Diego womanTrial testimony indicated that Ford's fingerprint did not yield results on a San Diego County database, but when submitted to a national database, a match was found in connection with Ford's 2015 arrest in North Carolina for making criminal threats.He was subsequently arrested in the summer of 2018.His murder trial began earlier this week at the downtown San Diego courthouse. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Pride Live, the online pride parade and festival, kicked off a day-long event today featuring elected officials, community organizations and businesses.Because of the pandemic, organizers took the historic Pride Parade march through Hillcrest online -- sdpride.org/live/ -- and began at 10 a.m. with a slide show of photos from 46 years of the parade, which started in 1974. The San Diego Women's Chorus followed with a virtual singing of the national anthem. An interfaith blessing, with clergy from various denominations, gave their blessings.In 1994, the San Diego Women Motorcycle Riders first appeared to officially kick off the parade, which usually had about 350,000 participants and 200 pride floats, along with 400 volunteers.This year, about 12 motorcycles from the group took off from the site of the Hillcrest pride flag at University Avenue and Normal Street.
