The poultry pair's journey to Washington was a veritable gravy train.Presidential turkeys are raised separately from their soon-to-be-stuffed counterparts, according to the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council.Per the council, Peas and Carrots lived in their own house away from the other turkeys and were handled regularly to "get used to people and activity," as it is important that they wouldn't be in a fowl mood for their big day.Weighing in at 39 and 41 pounds, respectively, Peas and Carrots hatched in late June of this year. Andy Parker, whose daughter Alison was killed on live television during a news report two years ago, said Thursday he was considering running for the seat of retiring Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte.Parker has been an outspoken critic of Goodlatte, the powerful chairman of the House judiciary committee, for his longstanding ties with the National Rifle Association. Parker's daughter lived in Goodlatte's district, and the father has pushed for gun control ever since she was killed.Parker said he's been talking with his family about the possibility of running for the seat as a Democrat. Parker lives outside the district, and if he were to run and win, his family would have to move."I've got some time to ponder it," Parker said.Parker said he was at the dentist's office Thursday morning when his daughter's boyfriend, Chris Hurst, texted him with the news about Goodlatte's retirement. An incident that began as an argument over masks led to an officer-involved shooting near Lansing, Michigan on Tuesday.A 43-year-old man from Grand Ledge was shot and killed by a police officer after a fight at a Quality Dairy store in Dimondale.Authorities say a 77-year-old man from Lansing who was wearing a mask and the 43-year-old man who wasn't wearing a mask got into an altercation.The unmasked man reportedly stabbed the masked man and fled the area. A deputy later spotted the vehicle and pulled him over.Once the man pulled over his car, police say he approached the deputy with two knives and a screwdriver.Authorities say the assailant continued to approach the deputy as she backed up, and she fired her weapon, fatally shooting the assailant.The deputy was not physically harmed and is on administrative leave.The case has been turned over to Michigan State Police.The 77-year-old man who was stabbed is reportedly stable.This story was originally published by WXYZ in Detroit. 1000

Applebee's announced Tuesday it will close as many as 80 restaurants nationwide as the chain continues to struggle attracting young diners.The announcement comes after Applebee's parent company, DineEquity, said in August it would close more than 100 restaurants.It's not clear which Applebee's locations would close, but according to Fortune, remaining locations will be judged on a number of criteria. “The expected closures will be based on several criteria, including meeting our brand and image standards as well as operational results,” DineEquity told Fortune in a statement.DineEquity also announced it would close up to 40 IHOP locations, though it plans to open as many as 100 new locations of the breakfast chain throughout the country.DineEquity's stock has soared since the announcement, rising nearly 20 percent on Tuesday.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W.
