INDIANAPOLIS -- Members of a neighborhood on Indianapolis' northwest side are asking police to do something about a woman caught on camera attacking neighbors with a yard sign and threatening their lives.The woman was seen on video pulling signs out of Miguel Rios and Luvia Roman's yard and saying she'll kill them, all over a property line dispute on Twin Creeks Drive, just north of Northwestway Park.Neighbors say the woman has a history of harassing minority neighbors. Corey Banks, a neighbor from across the street, said he's been called the N-word multiple times by her. Rios and Roman bought the house next door to the woman about a year and a half ago. They say the woman has called the health department, narcotics and child protective services in an effort to get them to move."I'm scared for my life," Rios said. "I'm scared for my family's life. And it's just not right." 918

Jazzy the dog is all smiles in her maternity photos.Saginaw County Animal Care & Control posted images to social media recently showing Jazzy in her pregnancy glow.“Jazzy was recently surrendered to our shelter for no fault of her own. Along with our unbelievably photogenic Jazzy, we await the arrival of an amazing gift - her puppies coming very soon!” the post reads.The images show her lying on a white rug surrounded by flowers and white step stool nearby. INDIANAPOLIS —  When educators lose their licenses due to misconduct, that doesn’t necessarily mean they can no longer work with children in Indiana.Todd Boldry, a teacher and basketball coach in Knox County schools, was arrested and charged for child seduction. The state revoked his teaching license in 2013 when Boldry voluntarily surrendered it in exchange for prosecutors dropping the criminal charges.Boldry went on to work with teens as a basketball coach for Indiana Dawgz, a travel team in northwest Indiana.While schools have to perform background checks when hiring, there’s no standard procedure for non-school sports teams, churches, volunteer groups, and other organizations.“It would surprise me very little,” said Mike McCarty, a former detective and owner of Safe Hiring Solutions, a Danville company that runs background checks on school employees.“Most volunteer organizations that work or serve with children, it’s a policy issue, it’s not a law issue,” McCarty said. “There’s no standard requirement and there’s no standard for what a background check is."McCarty said many groups make the mistake of relying on the state’s sex offender registry before hiring.“These registries can be terribly outdated, and they vary from state to state,” he said. “It’s very easy to be a convicted sex offender but not be required to register as a sex offender based on plea agreements or a reduction in sentence.”Some educators who lost their state licenses after they were convicted of crimes against children were not on the sex offender registry.Bruce Ryan was convicted in 2011 of sexual misconduct with a minor after an inappropriate relationship with a student at Charles A. Tindley School, but he’s not on the sex offender registry.Former MSD of Wayne Township administrator John Maples was convicted in 2013 of disseminating matter harmful to minors.Maples lost his educator license, but he’s not on the sex offender registry.Similarly, ex-IPS counselor Shana Taylor, accused of having sex with students, lost her state license, but is not on the sex offender registry after pleading guilty to three felony counts of dissemination of matter harmful to minors.Since 2012, the Indiana Department of Education has revoked or suspended the licenses of 108 educators including teachers, counselors and administrators.The top reason – child seduction.ISTEP impropriety, sexual misconduct with a minor, battery, child pornography and child exploitations were among the other reasons for educators losing their licenses to work with children.Under state law, the Indiana Department of Education automatically and permanently revokes licenses after certain offenses, such as child molesting, child solicitation, child exploitation, sexual misconduct with a minor and rape. 2791

In the wake of COVID-19, doctors officers switched to treatment through telehealth to keep patients safe. For addicts and recovering addicts, the idea of getting help though virtual connections was a little different.“I’ve continually gone to meetings for 39 years, and now all of a sudden I’m not going to meetings,” Kathleen Gargan said. She’s been sober since 1981. “Thirty-nine years. I’m very lucky.”She has been going to meetings with different recovery groups for decades.“I think that's what’s kept me sober all this time is continually going to meetings and being reminded of what my life was like when I drank,” she explained. Most recently through LifeRing, a peer-to-peer support organization.For the last few months, group meetings have been mostly non-existent. The COVID-19 pandemic forced support groups to move online, which has its pros and cons.“It has made treatment available to some people who otherwise wouldn't be able to get it because they're in rural areas or far away, but it is lacking some of that in person interaction, accountability,” Doctor Christian Hopfer, an addiction psychiatrist, said. He is with the UCHealth Center for Dependency, Addiction and Rehabilitation in Colorado. “A lot of the treatment is connecting with other people in person.”Quarantinis, virtual happy hours, physical isolation. Market research firm Nielsen found that in-store alcohol sales growth for the week of March 31 spiked 54 percent compared to the year before. Both for people who live in an area where they don't have resources available for addiction treatment, but also for people who have busy lives,” Doctor Abe Malkin, a Medical Advisor for Monument, said.Monument is a new platform aimed at connecting patients to doctors.“Initially, the founder Mike Russell created Monument through his own journey to change his relationship with alcohol,” Dr. Malkin said. “Due to the pandemic and to social distancing and stay-at-home orders, people have had to deal with increasing anxiety, feelings of isolation, which have further triggered relapses in the community.”Monument doesn’t replace the detox process, but it works for those looking for a treatment center, a doctor to connect with, or for peer support.“We’re really trying to make this more welcoming, more inviting to people. Something they can feel that they’re part of a community without having to depart from their normal daily routines,” Dr. Malkin said.Even with new platforms to help with connection, Gargan says nothing beats in-person interaction.“Since we have the Zoom meetings, they feel great about it, they don't have to get out of their pajamas ….and they don't have to drive anywhere,” she said. “Face to face experience is, in general, richer.” 3174
