GUANGZHOU, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- One person is missing and more than a million residents affected as typhoon Koppu landed in southern China's Guangdong Province Tuesday, local authorities said.     About 1.06 million people in 69 townships in Jiangmen and Yangjiang cities were feeling the effect of the storm at 6 p.m., said Guangdong Flooding and Drought Relief Headquarters. One person in Zhuhai City is missing.     In Shenzhen City, 169 flights were delayed on Tuesday, stranding nearly 10,000 passengers.     The typhoon, the 15th this year, has brought heavy rains to Guangdong.     In Yangjiang City, where the typhoon downgraded into a strong tropical storm, fallen trees and branches could be seen along the roads.     In Sanya City in the southern island province of Hainan, the typhoon brought rain of more than 167 millimeters.     Shipping services across the southern Qiongzhou Strait, which have been suspended since Monday afternoon, were expected to resume Wednesday.     Local experts have warned of flash flooding, with the possible dangers of mudslides and landslides.     Koppu would bring heavy rain to most parts of southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Hainan and Guangdong during the next two days, China's central observatory said.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who headed Monday to the typhoon-hit regions in Fujian and Zhejiang, warned Tuesday that the country faces grim tasks of fighting secondary disasters as a result of Typhoon Morakot. Big floods are still likely to happen as heavy rainfall persists in the south and many rivers continued to maintain high water levels, he said.     More than 20 rivers reported water levels above flood-alarm lines in Zhejiang, Fujian and Anhui provinces. The county seat of Cangnan is flooded on Aug. 10, 2009 in east China's Zhejiang Province. Rainfall brought by typhoon "Morakot", the 8th this year, has flooded the county seat of Cangnan    Hui asked relevant departments to strengthen monitoring of flooding and forecasts of other disasters, so as to relocate people as quickly as possible to minimize casualties.     Typhoon Morakot has left eight people dead and three missing on the Chinese mainland after a powerful landing in east China Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs Tuesday.     As of Tuesday afternoon, Morakot had moved into the Yellow Sea, and would gradually pose less threat to coastal provinces in eastern China.

NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak here on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the UN meetings to discuss bilateral ties and other issues of common interests.     Hu said thanks to their joint efforts the two countries have seen steady progress of exchanges and cooperation in various fields in recent years.     All consensus reached between them have been implemented smoothly, with some already bringing about remarkable results, Hu said.     Hu noted that the two countries have maintained fine communication and coordination in regional and international affairs, adding that China is ready to join hands with South Korea to strengthen strategic communication and expand mutually beneficial cooperation, so as to bring concrete benefits to both peoples and contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in Northeast Asia. BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Goni has brought huge rainfall to south China after it landed early Wednesday morning in Taishan of south China's Guangdong Province.     Downpours drenched most parts of Guangdong and neighboring Fujian province, with a hydrological station in Guangdong reporting precipitation of about 400 mm.     The weakening Goni is moving westward slowing and is expected to bring downpours to west Guangdong from Thursday to Friday.     Maritime affairs department in the southern island province of Hainan said Tuesday that it had issued an emergency warning to 20,000 fishing vessels in the South China Sea, calling them to harbor.     Another tropical storm, Morakot, has strengthened into typhoon and is expected to make a landfall from late Friday to Saturday in central and northern Fujian, weather forecasters said.     Local authorities have put in place emergency plans to evacuate residents amid other efforts to reduce losses from Morakot, the 8th typhoon this year.     Severe rainstorms also wreak havoc in other parts of the country Wednesday.     In Suichuan, eastern Jiangxi province, flash flood washed down five houses and killed at least three people.     Rain-related disasters also killed two in the southwestern Guizhou province and another two in neighboring Chongqing municipality.

HANGZHOU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said Saturday his country welcomes Chinese investors.     Zardari made the call during his visit to Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, the first leg of his ongoing China tour. The infrastructure alone will require an initial investment of 110 billion U.S. dollars.     Chinese fruit preservers can also play a crucial role in Pakistan as about 40 percent of Pakistan's fruit can not be moved to other places due to the lack of freezing vehicles, according to Pakistani officials, who commented on the basis of anonymity.     Zardari was paying his fourth visit to China since taking office last September.     He attributed his frequent visits to the intent of bringing back home China's experience in development.
