ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - In one of the closest races this election cycle in San Diego County, Escondido Mayor Sam Abed added nine votes to his narrow lead Tuesday. He now holds a 29-vote advantage over challenger Paul McNamara.Abed is seeking a third term as mayor, first winning in 2010. He was previously a councilman from 2004-2010.Political analyst John Dadian told 10News he did not anticipate the race being so close. "I did not see it coming, so I am suprised. Going into the last week of the campaign, all the people I talked to that really know that area well, they did not see this coming."Dadian feels several factors are playing a role in tightening the race. He cites changing demographics in Escondido, pulling away from the city's long-time conservative majority. Another conservative incumbent, Ed Gallo, appears to be losing his seat, as well.In addition, Democrats in the region had a large turnout, based largely on the unsuccessful effort to oust Congressman Duncan Hunter. That large turnout may have had a down-ballot effect on the mayoral race.Dadian also sites Abed's controversial stance on immigration, leading Escondido's bid to support efforts against California's sanctuary laws and visiting the White House for a highly-publicized meeting with President Trump. Dadian believes that may have helped enthuse opposition against Abed.As of Tuesday night, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu says there are still 299,000 ballots to count county-wide. (KGTV) - California's nearly 3-year-old ban on single-use plastic bags may be having an unintended impact: a spike in shoplifting.In late June at Major Market in Escondido - just before closing time - two women are recorded sauntering down the liquor aisle, before they begin stuffing their bags. "They're putting in our high-end champagne. About a bottle," said night manager John Kuper.By the time they're done, they collect seven bottles of champagne and one bottle of vodka."They didn't establish eye contact when I said goodbye to them. Their purses looked awfully full," said Kuper.Kuper says when he later looked at the video, he saw them walk out without paying. "Makes me sick to my stomach. That's your profit coming out of the registers there ... We believe the same women may have come in a month before and stolen champagne," says Kuper.Kuper's market is not the only one feeling the pain, as these scenes become more and more common. The Neighborhood Market Association estimates shoplifting losses at local groceries has climbed from 25% to 30% since the ban became law in 2016. Kuper says with so many customers now bringing in their own bags, spotting shoplifters is a big challenge."If they walk out with their own bags, we can't check every bag," said Kuper.Hiring extra security at the door is pricey and risks alienating customers. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County’s largest ice-skating facility is closing for good.Officials with Ice-Plex Escondido announced Thursday that the facility, located on 555 N. Tulip St., is shutting down effective immediately.Since 1995, Ice-Plex was a destination for San Diegans looking for a place to ice skate or play hockey. The facility, with its two Olympic-sized ice rinks, offered classes and public ice skating sessions that ran 7 days a week.In a statement on their website, Ice-Plex officials said, “This was not an easy decision. Our hockey and skating communities have been strong partners to us throughout the years, and we have worked hard over the last few months to find an alternative way to keep the facility open. Unfortunately, that solution has not emerged.”Officials said the facility has been operating “at a substantial loss” in the past few years, and they’ve struggled to maintain the equipment and other systems needed to keep the facility running.The pandemic-related closure also affected the facility’s ability to stay afloat, and despite numerous efforts, officials could not find ways to keep the Ice-Plex open.“We close our doors with a heavy heart and would like to extend our deepest thanks to our athletes, customers, staff and volunteers, who have been responsible for creating a welcome and competitive environment at Ice-Plex. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV/CNS) - CHP officers are investigating a crash in Escondido that left a driver with burns to about 80 percent of his body Wednesday morning.The 22-year-old driver, who police believe is a current or former Marine, hit a tree at Bear Valley Pkwy north of Eldorado Dr. at 2:45 a.m.The vehicle caught fire but emergency crews put out the flames. Neighbors who heard the crash also helped the driver.CHP officers initially believed the driver was dead inside the vehicle but found him alive when they put out the flames.The man was taken to UCSD Medical Center with burns and other severe injuries.The investigation closed Bear Valley Pkwy from Bear Valley Rd. to SR-78 during the morning commute.  750
