SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New details about the high speed chase that backed up traffic on Interstate 5 in La Jolla last week.Today, the driver faced a judge. Nancy Sussman is no stranger to the courthouse. Usually, she’s representing her clients, but this time she’s defending herself against criminal charges that could send her to prison.Traffic backed up. Drivers snapping video of how the high speed chase ended. Police say Sussman finally stopped when they laid down spike strips. Still, they say she refused to come out of the car, eventually forcing them to smash out one of the windows.10News is learning new details about the woman behind the wheel of the white Mercedes. Sussman is a longtime medical malpractice attorney.RELATED: Woman arrested after leading police on chaseIn court Tuesday, she represented herself. “Are you an attorney,” the judge asked.The judge entered a not guilty plea on Sussman’s behalf. She’s charged with felony evading, driving with a suspended license and resisting arrest.Sussman tried to explain to the judge why she didn’t stop. “Regarding the chase, I was a victim of police brutality on October 28th.”According to a police report, the October 28 case involves Sussman and her neighbor, a Border Patrol agent. In that case, she’s charged with burglary, making criminal threats, vandalism and other charges.On December 30, police tried pulling her over on that warrant, finally arresting her after that chase on I-5.If convicted on the charges connected to the chase, Sussman faces more than six years in prison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One San Diego restaurant has been awarded one of the most prestigious accolades given to eateries.Chef William Bradley's restaurant Addison at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar was given one Michelin star in the guide's first California edition. The guide awards between one and three stars to restaurants, meaning either "a very good restaurant in its category" (one star), "excellent cooking, worth a detour" (two stars), or "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey" (three stars).Addison, a contemporary French restaurant, was San Diego's only restaurant to receive a star and one of 90 to receive at least one star in the California guide.RELATED: Michelin names several San Diego restaurants as 'hidden gems'In a statement to 10News, Bradley said the award is "humbling." Opponents have contributed million.As written on the ballot, Proposition 15 will "increase funding sources for public schools, community colleges, and local government services by changing tax assessment of commercial and industrial property."The Proposition will raise commercial and industrial property taxes by reassessing property based on current values. Under 1978's Proposition 13, property tax has been calculated based on the value when the property was last sold.The change in tax assessments could bring the state anywhere from billion to billion every year.Because so much money is at stake, stakeholders are willing to spend a lot to sway voters."With those being the stakes, we felt compelled to do whatever is necessary to raise funds to defeat this thing," says Michael Bustamante, the Spokesperson for the No on Prop 15 campaign committee. They've raised the most money of any committee listed, at million.A large chunk of that money, million, comes from the California Business Roundtable. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New studies are showing that one of the most important risk factors for COVID-19 is weight, including for children.People who are obese are more than twice as likely to wind up in the hospital with COVID-19 as those with normal weight, and 48 percent more likely to die from it, according to a study last month that looked at hundreds of thousands of patients.“Some people have made the argument that the deaths from COVID are just in people with preexisting conditions. Well, this is a preexisting condition that affects a third of the U.S. population in the obese range and another third in the overweight range,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego. “So it’s extremely common.”More than 71 percent of adults are either overweight or obese, according to the CDC. Adults are considered overweight if their body mass index is 25 or higher, and obese if their BMI is 30 or higher.The U.S. has one of the highest rates of obesity in the world, and some experts have theorized it’s one of the reasons why the virus has hit our country harder than others.The risk extends to children as well, who are generally spared from severe cases of COVID-19. Among children hospitalized with the disease, 38 percent had obesity, by far the largest risk factor, according to a CDC study.But what is it about fat that makes the virus worse?There are several theories. People who are obese have blood that clots more easily, one of the main ways COVID-19 kills. Fat cells secrete tiny proteins that cause inflammation, another huge problem with COVID patients that can spiral out of control in what’s called a cytokine storm.Overall, obese people have weaker immune systems.“The theory is that the fat is taking over in certain parts of your body that normally are producing white blood cells,” said Dr. Marsha Blount of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Center.Extra fat on the abdomen makes it harder to get air into the lungs, exacerbating conditions like pneumonia. And the extra weight makes it harder to use a ventilator, said Dr. Ramers.On top of all that, people with obesity frequently have other underlying conditions.“Hypertension, diabetes, obesity, fatty liver -- these things are all associated with each other,” Dr. Ramers said. “What we’ve seen is that each of them is related to a poor outcome with COVID.”Studies have shown that simply being overweight increases the risk of COVID-19. A study of nearly 17,000 hospitalized patients in the U.S. found that 29 percent were overweight and another 48 percent were obese.The encouraging news, according to Dr. Blount, is that losing just 5 percent of your weight can have significant benefits. Dr. Blount teaches other physicians how to talk about weight loss with a technique called motivational interviewing.“That 5 percent has been proven time and time again to decrease the risk of getting diabetes. It decreases breast cancer risk for females. It lowers triglycerides and improves HDL, which are different lipid numbers and that thereby decreases your risk of stroke and heart attack,” she said.It can also reduce blood pressure, another major risk factor for COVID, suggesting a little weight loss can go a long way. 3215
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Opening statements started Wednesday in the trial of a father accused of killing his two children in a fire at his Rancho Bernardo condo in 2017. Investigators said Henry Lopez passed out drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a fire that spread to the rest of the home. His children, 10-year-old Cristos and 7-year-old Isabella, died as a result of smoke inhalation. Lopez was also hospitalized with burns. Lopez’ ex-wife Nikia testified at his preliminary hearing in February 2018, saying the couple was in the custody of a divorce. Nikia Lopez also said her ex-spouse was an abusive alcoholic.
