SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council today unanimously approved a 20-year lease that will pave the way for a museum and community center at a city-owned property adjacent to Chicano Park. The Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center has for several decades sought to move into the 9,890-square-feet building at 1960 National Ave., which formerly housed an adult education campus. The vacant property will allow the 48-year-old nonprofit to expand services, programs and exhibitions related to the art, history and sciences of the Americas, with an emphasis on U.S.-Mexico border region cultures.Chicano Park has gotten new playground equipment and bathrooms in recent years, "but there was always something missing. And this is the piece that was missing," City Councilman David Alvarez said."I want to thank you for saying 'yes' to the community this time because this community has heard 'no' a lot more than it has heard 'yes' over the years," he told his colleagues. "Chicano Park is what it is today because of the community... The museum and cultural center will be successful because 1103

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The remaining sailors from the San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt who stayed ashore in Guam following a COVID-19 outbreak aboard the carrier will fly back to the United States starting Friday, according to the Navy. The carrier resumed its scheduled deployment in the Indo-Pacific last Thursday, though a few hundred sailors remained in Guam to continue receiving medical care. The Navy says those service members will take military flights to the U.S., where they will be required to complete a two-week "restriction-of- movement sequester" either at home or at facilities on base at their home station. The ship originally departed San Diego on Jan. 17 for a deployment, but was diverted to Guam on March 27 when the COVID-19 outbreak took hold, ultimately infecting more than 1,100 sailors, and killing one, Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Charles Thacker, 41.The ship's commanding officer, Capt. Brett Crozier, made a publicized plea for assistance from Navy leadership in a letter that was leaked to the press, leading to his removal from command of the ship. While many have called for his reinstatement, the Navy has stated that its investigation into the circumstances behind the letter's leak is ongoing. Crozier has since been reassigned to the Naval Air Forces in San Diego, while Thomas Modly, the former Acting Secretary of the Navy who fired Crozier, resigned after he criticized Crozier to the ship's crew in a speech that was leaked online. The ship briefly went to sea June 2 to complete carrier qualifications before returning to Apra Harbor in Guam two days later to pick up around 1,000 sailors.Navy officials said the carrier now operates with new COVID-19 standard operating procedures, which modifies how crew members move through the ship, expands meal hours and establishes new social distancing procedures."The crew humbly prepared to go back to sea, they had a job to do, and they did it without hesitation," said the ship's commanding officer, Capt. Carlos Sardiello. "We have returned Theodore Roosevelt to sea as a symbol of hope and inspiration, and an instrument of national power because we are TR." 2153

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes in San Diego County dropped 10.5 percent in July compared to June, according to data released Wednesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Month-over-month single-family home sales fell from 2,221 in June to 1,989 in July. Condominium and townhome sales fell from 1,162 to 994, a 14.5 percent drop, according to the association.Single-family home sales and sales of condominiums and townhomes saw smaller decreases when compared to July 2017. The former decreased from 2,127 to 1,989 and the latter decreased from 1,136 to 994, drops of 6.5 percent and 12.5 percent, respectively.RELATED: Air conditioning a hot commodity in San Diego homesThe year-over-year drop is in spite of the supply of homes for sale rising roughly 11 percent."Demand is still outpacing the supply of homes," GSDAR President Steve Fraioli said. "But it's clear that inventory of homes for sale has improved over last year. That should encourage buyers."While purchase rates fell, median home prices for both single-family homes and larger homes both rose from June to July. Single-family median home prices rose 0.3 percent from 5,000 to 7,000, while larger home prices rose 1.6 percent from 5,000 to 2,000.RELATED: Longer drive could save San Diegans on housingThe year-over-year price increases both sit around 6.7 percent, an average rise of roughly ,000. 1433

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Santa Ana winds and low humidity levels will keep the risk of wildfire high across the San Diego area into Tuesday, as they did for much of last week.To alert the public to the combustion hazards posed by the gusty and arid conditions, the National Weather Service issued a red flag wildfire warning for local mountain and western-valleys communities, effective through 10 p.m. Tuesday. A high-wind warning also will be in effect from 6 this evening through noon Tuesday in those same areas.Outdoor burning, mechanized brush clearing and other potentially spark-creating activities should be avoided over the period, as any fires that develop will spread rapidly, according to the NWS.As of late this afternoon, San Diego Gas & Electric had instituted public-safety power shutoffs in parts of Descanso, Jamul, Potrero, Ramona, Santa Ysabel and Valley Center in a bid to avoid any blazes ignited by transmission equipment. A total of 2,807 addresses were affected, and the utility advised another 47,676 of its customers across the East County that their power might be shut off as a precaution as well.Conditions are expected to warm up Tuesday and Wednesday, after which temperatures will drop slightly on Thursday and Friday, forecasters said. 1275

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes. The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas. Students were required to think critically about the way public transit shapes our communities.''The contest comes from a partnership between MTS, Coca-Cola Refreshments of San Diego and the San Diego County Office of Education. Each applicant had to be a county resident and attend a county high school to be eligible. 1136
